Carl was a dear friend. We played a lot of telethon's together. His sister was married to my cuz. How I grew to know him since I was born. Trust me he could walk on stage with you & the energy level exploded with his first note. R.I.P.Bro.
The debate about where Rock and Roll came from or was born will depend on the bias and roots of the person arguing for a particular source. The fact is, R'nR was an evolution of music that was influenced by big band blues and jazz, by country, western swing and large portion of blues and rythm and blues. The fact is rock and roll and blues was all but dead to king country music until The Beatles the Stones and The Brits showed the world what it could become and did. Fact is Rap screwed it all.
Better read Carls book - called "Go Cat Go", which I believe is out of printing. But some great insight when they were just starting out. Elvis and Carl, as well as a few others.
@bbackriders: That's not alright! It was Perkins hit, after a car crash of Perkins it wasn't possilbe for him to sing the song, so elvis made his first great hit with it ;)
That was NOT Carl Perkins' song...it was Arthur Crudup's song...This was Elvis's first big hit and what is regarded as the song that started Rock 'n Roll.
Everyone remembers Elvis, and Jerry Lee few remember what an influence Carl Perkins was in those days.
Carl rips this one up in his usual style...love this version!
no no no no no, the first song considered Rock was "Rocket in my pocket" by Ike Turner in 1948 But Ike was black so, they had to find a white guy to give credit for founding Rock N Roll, you can look it up or just ask Little Richard. and anyway, Elvis couldn't even read music let alone play guitar. Elvis sucked! But for the real roots of Rock N Roll give Hoagy Carmichael a try. "To have and have not" with Humphrey Bogart. Hoagy wrote "moonlight serenade." Big Band is the root
Lotsa people don't know what a great picker Carl Perkins was...I remember an interview where he was talking about writing 'Honey Don't'...he'd never seen or heard going from an E to a C, so why not???
FACT: If it wasn't for guys like Carl Perkins, Charles Edward Berry, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly & Little Richard, there never would've been the BEATLES.
Youre right, elvis was the knig of rock'n'roll..you meant king? But now, Elvis didn't invent or write anything, Carl Perkins did..So if Pelvis is the king, Carl is the God..
If Carl hadn't gotten into a horrible accident after his release of Blue Suede Shoes, he would have been bigger than Elvis with the momentum he would have had.
@JimCashFan Funny isn't it, the amount of singers who would have been bigger than Elvis, if only this, or if only that. Carl made some great records, and will be remembered for his part in the rock and roll journey. But he would never have been bigger than Elvis, unless he stood on stilts. I bet the royalties from Elvis's recording of Blue Suede Shoes came in handy. How good is that, have a hit record as writer, then get someone to record another hit version, and cry all the way to the bank
@frankiehiyo Good point. I'm betting Carl wasn't too upset over Elvis's version. I didn't mean to seem too hostile in my comments. It's been a long time since I've posted that.
I wish I had a cool alert such as that :T, got a pretty good voice the background for this performance is perfecto mundo dudes and dudettes

Elvis more well known than Carl among people who don't know music.
Those who know the music and the history of rock and roll however, revere Carl Perkins, just like the Beatles and Clapton, etc did.
Music is a big world.
It does not detract from the wonder that was Elvis to recognize that Carl was a pioneer and a legend among the people who know.
