Many handgun will take a bear down. Anything bigger than a 357.. The Smith and Wesson 500 is a 50 caliber cartridge round that was designed for grizzly hunting along with elephant.

In this situation I would bet my life on a 44 mag I would even go as low as 38 special, or a 45 acp..I would perfer a 500 and 460 s&w 454 casual, 45 colt, 45 win mag, 44 mag, 357 mag. ALL great firearm cartridges and interchangable with many rifles. some mite say "your not bringing enough gun" I defintly am, at that range those pistols would do the same dmg as any hunting rifle/shotgun (using a slug not buck) of choice.

OK I'll weigh in. The BEST weapon to stop a bear with is a 12 ga shotgun loaded with 3" magnum 1 oz. rifled slugs. Read the book "The Grizzly Maze," and you will discover that is what the Alaskan Park Rangers carry in the bush. The energy delivered, and size of the projectile, give that weapon awesome stopping power.

I went camping in Algonquin this weekend and since we already saw 2 black bears we had BEAR MACE on us---my cousin opened it and ACCIDENTALLY sprayed it 4 feet away from me and my daughter!!! LET ME TELL YOU if youve never smelt it or been sprayed it is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!

Bad choice for a bear. Hollow points tend to mushroom and quickly dump their energy, resulting in inadequate penetration. You want a non-expanding bullet that will not break up and that has enough energy to penetrate bone and muscle. I wouldn't carry anything smaller than a 30-06 rifle with ammunition designed for dangerous game. A pistol, even a 44 Magnum, may just anger the bear.

Do not be foolish and think a gun will protect you from a grizz attack.

Use bear spray. It's well proven to be FAR more effective than a gun. Note that even a "very powerful" pistol like a 44 mag is paltry when compared even with a "low powered" rifle such as a 30-30.
