  • I laughed when he said that Windows copied OSX ....

  • Everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Only Helvetica is capable of that!

  • Everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Only Helvetica is capable of that!

  • Does anyone know what the typeface is on the poster behind him? The stencilish looking one? I have been looking for a while, I have Glaser, which is similar but not quite the same.

  • he's the man

  • It's a long standing type face for many very good reasons. Great documentary.

  • @lischopine

I thought Arial was Helvetica, just that Microsoft couldn't use the same name. You must be incredibly observant to notice the difference... How can you tell?

  • @jat989 Helvetica has horizontal cutoffs for C, e, s, etc. Also, the lowercase a in Helvetica medium has a different tail. Microsoft had someone "redesign" Arial so that they wouldn't have to pay for rights to Helvetica.

  • @susiehuff

I thought Arial was the web font equivalent to Helvetica.

  • JCPenney

  • helveitca, more like SLUTvetica

  • @sophistifunk88 You suck.

  • The best thing about Nimbus Sans is not that it's a modern improvement on Helvetica, but that it's under GNU licensing thus it's free.

  • Protip to all you fascist designers out there: Helvetica isn't the only decent font, and it makes all of your instantly seem generic.

  • @coppurt

Protip 2: Not all of us Designers use Helvetica. Fuck off.

  • Helvetica and Gotham are the best font families out there.

too bad they cost like 200 dollars each.

    *pirates*

  • Pre-Hipster documentary.

  • Very interesting video.

  • bloke has bloody good english, considering he's from germany

  • After watching this, and realizing what Helvetica was, I now can't help but notice when businesses use Arial instead (not to mention the complete horror in the revelation that Helvetica is a permanent piece of the collective commercial consciousness now).

  • this is not the full video of spiekermann :/

  • 1:21 is not Helvetica.

  • uh, exactly... that's the front of spiekermann's office.

  • @swissdots I'm sorry! But I left the comment before I saw the office. Warum schreib ich eigentlich auf englisch? Egal.

  • 1.40, notice how the person alt tabs back into work.

  • You bloody fool, it's a documentary, don't you think she does realize there is a camera right behind her?

  • Easy little fella, it's not that serious.. It's observational humor. She may not have realized that she was in the shot considering it started not even admin in her direction.

  • @mabans Yeah, his clearly using Facebook!

  • @mabans Eagle Eyes.

  • @mabans no

  • Um.... No. >.>

  • I fucking LOVE helvetica!

  • Typography<3

  • u have no idead what u talking abut.... why the hell are u watching this clip then???

  • Congratulations on being another ignorant simpleton in the world who can't even write English properly.

  • it is something you have seen so many times but is so well done that is almost invisible.

  • TYPOGRAPHY

  • This guy is very intresting and obviously a very dedicated man to his work. I like that.

  • I like Helvetica.

  • I am a highly awarded member of the creative class. As a branding consultant, I am conflicted by my work. I spend the better portion of my day fostering corporate clients whose aim is to visually proliferate every aspect of your life. These companies are driven by market share and have a low regard for consumers beyond their ability to purchase product.

  • ...can totally dig where you're coming from. well put.

  • My advice: Have a holiday

  • You <3 penis.. typography is So0o0o0o over looked.. you will only get this movie if your in graphic design..

  • I am in graphic design.

  • yes

    that is true

  • Write that down in your copybooks now.

  • UP WIHT HELVETIKA! DOWN WITH MCCAIN!

  • fast bitches, dank blunts

    use helvetica

    peace ~~

  • I would totally fuck the Helvetica O.

  • type turns me on!

  • Arial is not the same thing as Helvetica.

  • Their so similar it's not even funny, Try typing Helvetica in both Arial and Helvetica and they will come out exactly the same

  • Yeah, capital R. Look at the lowercase a, g, h. Arial does have horizontal terminals, especially the lowercase letters. Its close in that Arial was designed for the screen/pc based on Helvetica, but it is not the same thing.

Robin Nicholas, the designer of Arial, said he "never wanted to recreate a font."

    Case closed. NEXT.

  • you clearly arent a designer...

they are not exactly the same try seeing instead of just looking

  • Comment removed

  • I think it would be better to say arial looks like helvetica, and not the other way around which is what you seem to be implying.

  • Look at capital R in both. That's the biggest giveaway...

  • Helvetica was designed years before Arial. Arial is a rip off of Helvetica, created by microsoft. Watch Helvetica all the way through and you will understand.

  • If you had any interest or brief knowledge you'd know the two are so different.

  • I've been designing for many years, and Arial has very miniscule differences, but the overall look is almost exactly the same

  • oh my god?????

    what?

and the fact you say you have been designing for many years? i am disappointed in this comment by you shame

  • helvetica changed my life!

    <3!!!

  • what an amazing movie.

    when in doubt use helvetica.

  • See thats why people are getting angry that its used so much, because they think its lazyness, i think its just a nice clean font, but thats everyones opinions =)

  • i wish i had this font! HELVETICA RULES

  • Helvetica is a standard typeface on both windows and mac computers.

  • It is not standard on Windows.

  • That's because windows suck. They made their own helvetica (arial)so they wouldn't have to pay licensing for helvetica.

    ;)

  • bitch please!

  • dude, it's the truth

  • I see that, it's just shocking.

  • well obviously your not artistic in anyway. you should be ashamed of your self for commenting negatively about on of the greatest films. Keep your thoughts to your self, because I guarantee you that if you continue your behaver, you will become lonely.

  • this film changed my life. It changed the way I look at things; The Starbucks logo over across the street, the street sign that I pass 4 times everyday, the type on my MacBook, and everything else. This is probably the most inspiring, smartest, and the most "must see" documentaries of all time. So if you have nothing to do and watching videos in YouTube, go rent this movie and watch it. Trust me, this one is a hit.

  • I had to watch the whole thing in my graphic design class.

The worst part was, I enjoyed it.

  • I think I have to watch it in mine as well.

  • Me too. But then the day before I saw the new Bond Movie, and the best part of it was all the typefaces...

  • And I thought I was excited to see it before....

    Jeez.

  • the best part is that this comment is typed in helvetica

  • looks like arial to me

  • Yeah, video games are interesting.

  • i really enjoy the music :)

  • erik, you are still the guv... tell it like it is...

  • my favorite part was when they showed the crystal meth ad set in helvetica

  • Helvetica Neue Ultra Light Is the best!!! It sets so prefectly! I love that font.

  • Yea I like the Neue series

  • Neue Ultra Light is so sexy. Black is nice too.

  • indeed :)

  • I've watched the DVD a dozen times. Just keep it running in the background while I work. What a great documentary. I'd like to see more documentaries like this.

  • yea, for some reason this stuff is interesting to me (partly b/c I've been trying to find the perfect font since 5th grade)

  • Looking forward to seeing this film in Galway very soon. :-)

  • i love this film.

  • not loud enough.

  • I think this is my favorite clip from the film. Though I love the entire thing!

  • I really love the sound editing!

  • hello!

  • looking forward to seeing the film.

  • haaahah...i was the wristband nazi at the door.

  • saw the film at usc the other night. good film and good helveticake!

  • great font, and a very inspiring clip!

  • definately one of the greatest fonts ever designed
