I'm confused, that car was just trying to go over that little hill and that's what it was doing? I can do that in my Ford Explorer... was there something wrong with it or was the guy just gunning it?

Pajeros only fall behind patrol's and cruisers when you need big front end travel and ground clearance. One beaches etc, the paj is usually the LAST to get stuck. We went out with a modded surf, and 100 series on 35's and we could go further up the beach than both of them, and at higher speed. Apart from the ifs being a limit, they are great cars!
What's more, not always the more power you use the better effect you get. Imagine that you drive on ice - sometimes it's the same in the mud or other rough terrain. I'm sick of people who think that they will do better if they push the pedal to the metal...

i had a GU patrol for 2 years, great 4wd and can really get serious with it, but now i own a 89 pajero and done a few mods to it for offroad and pajero is very very well off road. they both great 4wds. only down side with the pajeros is that can't put 35s and lift has high as a patrol. :-(
pajero's dont need lockers for this kind of hills. their suspension is good enough to keep pretty even amount of weight on all tires.
i'm not going to flame the patrol's as they are pretty good cars, only problem with stock patrol's is that they have weak engines in stock form.
i'm pretty sure that the reason for the patrol having problem there was that the suspension had been stiffened up so it easily lost traction as not being able to distribute the weight evenly to all tires while flexing.
it is not about the driver , the patrol has too big wheels , those are not good for climbing , see for example a defender has wheel almost as big as a byke
ha ha yeah, guess they dont like being shown up, but it is hard to believe, i own a paj and love it but i find it hard to believe it pissed all over patrol like that, nice but unbelievable

offroad, sometimes less is more when it comes to the throttle!
you need to utilise that torque, low revs give the tyres a lot more traction!
once you've got some grip, then open up a little, but never floor it!
