bubbletwist: Mary Frann's character always wore sweaters which showed off her figure tastefully (emphasis on 'fully'!). This is hands down the greatest ending of any sitcom EVER!!
No doubt in my mind that the uproarious applause during the curtain call is held over from the surprise ending. Even Mary Tyler Moore's curtain call(in her last episode) wasn't that loud, but there was still a lot of applause.
@Bradat26 The crowd reaction said it all didn't it? And that voice....one of the great voices in TV and film, priceless....she was such a precious lady alright. :-)
Suzanne should have been part of the curtain call credits, don't you agree? I think the already thunderous applause, would have gotten more thunderous.
@cmulwee001 I think they would still be applauding!! I guess the only reason why she was not a part of the curtain call was because she was not a regular, but it would have been nice to acknowledge her as the "special guest star" of the finale.
Why can't other shows have such clever endings. Many times we will watch a series and then HATE the final so much we can't watch the series again in reruns.
The last episode and surprize "dream" ending was one of the most original and creative shows ever produced. The "it was all a dream" idea was the brainstorm from none other than Suzanne Pleshette!
I didn't see the final episode of "Newhart" when it originally aired on CBS in 1990. I do, however, remember hearing quite a bit about it. I've seen the final scene of this ep. at least twice; a great final scene at that!
I prefer the original "The Bob Newhart Show" over "Newhart" because of the storylines & characters. It was quite refreshing to see Suzanne Pleshette reprise her role of Emily Hartley here, although it was a cameo appearance. Quite possibly the best ep. of "Newhart, imo!
When I watch this it makes me sad, This type of creativity is gone. We may never see this genius again.
Seinfeld, Cheers, M.A.S.H. and many others were what made all of us feel that everything was going to be all right. Nightly we were reassured that tomorrow will come and tonight we can laugh at life through a Television.
No, As the Boomers age and die so to will the TV, the Genius that is, and the timing that make all great Comedy.
I was truly amazed and stunned at the ending! I always loved this show and the original Newhart show. When this show ended it was like the death of a friend. I was in mourning for a long time. Thanks for the memories, you made my day.
This was great. At the time we thought the Japanese was taking over, odd that never happened. Perhaps we worry too much about China? Thanks for posting.
Most brilliant end of a television series ever. Never watched the innkeeper series until the final episode but I'd seen plenty of the earlier one because it came on right after the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and I loved the end of this show, with the whole second series having been a dream. ("Dallas" did it to only one season and everyone hated that but love this.) This last scene somehow sort of validated my having skipped that second series.
the best...didnt work on st.elsewhere.....on time ....was a trip when i saw it i wasjust old enough to have seen the 1st bob newhart show....rest in peace susan
The curtain call end credits are reminiscent of the last Mary Tyler Moore show as it was originally broadcast. It looks as if the final "Newhart" may havetaken it's cue from that.
Yes, the best Series finale ever, It will take a lot to beat this. "What do you mean beautiful blonde?" Suzanne Pleshette is amazing. God bless her and RIP. I loved both shows.
I called the ending on this before it showed. I knew it was going to be a dream (like on Dallas) with Bob/Dick in bed with Emily. I really liked all the characters on this show, especially Stephanie and that funny sound she used to make (EWWW).
What a hilarious ending to a classic show 20 years ago last month. Bob Newhart is truly funny . I miss Julia Duffy so much and so does Tom Poston and his lovely wife Suzanne Pleshette. Newhart is one hilarious show that ran from 1982-1990. Look for it on DVD and see what you've been missing.
It's not funny because it was a dream...it was funny AND memorable because of the suprise element. Plus, you gotta remember, a lot of the shows viewers were older people who had watched Bob's first show in the 70's...so it was a treat for them to see the two actors of that show together again..
memorable, probably not for the kids of this age...but for us back then, it really was. As you can tell by the audience reaction of the last scene.
not that funny. maybe it was back in the 80's. also...this is one of the 'most memorable series finales of all time'? cmon. omgg it was a dream woow. Dallas did it before them.
only watching because LOSSTT (ACTUALLY the best finale of all time)
@thegreatyamaijo Your response is the reason this planet is so fucked up. You are the problem. They knew it had been done before. Thats why it is so funny. They did it to be funny. This is the best, funniest finale ever. No one saw it coming. Bob Newhart isa genious. You kids need to look up what came before. This is comic genious.
Kind of odd that Suzanne Pleshette wasn't mentioned in the credits...although I suppose anyone who "got" the ending would know exactly who that was in bed with Bob anyway.
This was one of my favorite family TV-viewing moments as a kid. As soon as the bedroom scene come up, my parents just ROARED!!! My little brother and I were both too young to remember the 70s Bob Newhart show (born in '77 and '74 respectively) and never saw it on syndication so we were confused! The ending was written 3 years before it aired-I just heard Bob say it 30 sec ago on a live radio interview-His wife came up with it when he was unhappy with CBS and wanted to get out then-Brilliant!!!
This is way for a series finale to go out!!!! Credit to the writers... After about 20 years this ending still to me is the best series finale I've seen.... Fingers crossed for LOST in 2010
Oh, man, thanks for posting this! The part where the two Darryls finally speak one word in the entire series is pricless. And the final scene is just brilliant.

oh- my -god!, she's like "janice" here, LOL!
This was a classic!
And I loved that they used the ending to segue into a Bob Newhart show reunion.
it was the morning after, at bob's office, and all were there. Carrol, Jerry, howard, etc.
bob talks about his dream, and then howard says that he had a dream about being an astronaut, and his friend had a genie!
too surreal! LOL!
