  • bubbletwist: Mary Frann's character always wore sweaters which showed off her figure tastefully (emphasis on 'fully'!). This is hands down the greatest ending of any sitcom EVER!!

  • Is that Phoebe from Friends at 3:53??

  • @tag927 Sure is!!

  • Is that Phoebe from Friends as one of Daryl's wifes in the black???

  • QUIET!!!!!-The Darryls.

  • This is awesome but i'm dumb and don't get the part were he tells emily that she should wear more sweaters

  • @bubbletwist2370 Mary Frann's character in the show (Joanna, Bob's wife) was known for wearing sweaters all the time.

  • @deenao Oh! thankss i would now if i actually watched this show haha

  • Suzanne Pleshette was a FINE woman. Her beauty is timeless. May she Rest in Peace.

  • No doubt in my mind that the uproarious applause during the curtain call is held over from the surprise ending. Even Mary Tyler Moore's curtain call(in her last episode) wasn't that loud, but there was still a lot of applause.

  • RIP, Mary Frann, and, Suzanne Pleshette.

  • @DaveWollenberg yes oh yes but don't forget tomPosten

  • @bigwillietheb You're absolutely right! Forgot 'bout Tom.

  • I was just a little kid when this was on.

  • Great show, good solid cast from start to end. Lots of laughs. No mystery as to why it was so popular.

It was heart breaking to see Mary Frann die so young though.

  • At 2:50, is that the boom mic peaking out from the top of the shot?

  • @GravityComedyGroup Looks like it, yes.

  • @GravityComedyGroup No, Magic Johnson was supposed to drop down from the ceiling as a special guest but had a wardrobe malfunction and had to abort.

  • Thanks 319xzp - I'd never have recognized Lisa Kudrow. Has to be the best ending ever! EVER!

  • My eyes filled up watching this then, and they filled up again now, when I saw Suzanne Pleshette. Loved the surprise ending. Pure genius!!

  • @Bradat26 The crowd reaction said it all didn't it? And that voice....one of the great voices in TV and film, priceless....she was such a precious lady alright. :-)

  • @Bradat26

Suzanne should have been part of the curtain call credits, don't you agree? I think the already thunderous applause, would have gotten more thunderous.

  • @cmulwee001 I think they would still be applauding!! I guess the only reason why she was not a part of the curtain call was because she was not a regular, but it would have been nice to acknowledge her as the "special guest star" of the finale.

  • @Bradat26

Ditto here. That's an era that never should've ended--I'm talking about either show, really.

  • Why can't other shows have such clever endings. Many times we will watch a series and then HATE the final so much we can't watch the series again in reruns.

    Bravo for Newhart....

  • The ending shows that the original Bob Newhart Show was much better than Newhart.

  • That's Lisa Kudrow ... ha ha

  • No doubt....one of the absolute best ever!!!!

  • A brilliant ending to a brilliant series!

  • The last episode and surprize "dream" ending was one of the most original and creative shows ever produced. The "it was all a dream" idea was the brainstorm from none other than Suzanne Pleshette!

  • Those three women are why suicide as a concept becomes a reality.

  • Always worth watching. That's Lisa Kudrow as Sada, by the way.

  • I didn't see the final episode of "Newhart" when it originally aired on CBS in 1990. I do, however, remember hearing quite a bit about it. I've seen the final scene of this ep. at least twice; a great final scene at that!

I prefer the original "The Bob Newhart Show" over "Newhart" because of the storylines & characters. It was quite refreshing to see Suzanne Pleshette reprise her role of Emily Hartley here, although it was a cameo appearance. Quite possibly the best ep. of "Newhart, imo!

  • 10:33 love her husky voice...

  • 2:52, a very special cameo from the microphone

  • When I watch this it makes me sad, This type of creativity is gone. We may never see this genius again.

Seinfeld, Cheers, M.A.S.H. and many others were what made all of us feel that everything was going to be all right. Nightly we were reassured that tomorrow will come and tonight we can laugh at life through a Television.

No, As the Boomers age and die so to will the TV, the Genius that is, and the timing that make all great Comedy.

    God Speed Suzanne Pleshette R.I.P.

  • Without a doubt, the greatest ending for a sitcom in the history of television! The writers were brilliant.

  • I wasn't alive with any of this, but I came across it and just could tell from the audiences reaction that it was a priceless TV moment.

  • lisa kudrow is the dark haired wife "sada" (in the middle)

oh- my -god!, she's like "janice" here, LOL!

    This was a classic!

And I loved that they used the ending to segue into a Bob Newhart show reunion.

it was the morning after, at bob's office, and all were there. Carrol, Jerry, howard, etc.

bob talks about his dream, and then howard says that he had a dream about being an astronaut, and his friend had a genie!

    too surreal! LOL!

  • is this wife of Bob in Blue - Suzanne Pleshette or someone else? i read Suzanne Pleshette plays his wife ....

  • The curtain call credits remind me of the original broadcast of the last Mary Tyler Moore Show

  • Hey, it's Mamie from Drew Carey...

  • QUIET!!!!!!

  • "You know, you, uh... you really should wear more sweaters."

That, ladies and gentlemen, is how to tell a classy breast joke.

  • @jackal59 i dont get it

  • I was truly amazed and stunned at the ending! I always loved this show and the original Newhart show. When this show ended it was like the death of a friend. I was in mourning for a long time. Thanks for the memories, you made my day.

  • no humour in this sit com as in all sitcoms. no wonder the collective intelligence of the u.s is declining.

  • This was great. At the time we thought the Japanese was taking over, odd that never happened. Perhaps we worry too much about China? Thanks for posting.

  • Lisa Kudrow was one of the sisters?! Awesome!

  • @Sue71 Oh man, you're right... the one in the black dress...

  • Criminy. Watched this when I was 8. Just found it tonite, now I get it.. LOL

  • Most brilliant end of a television series ever. Never watched the innkeeper series until the final episode but I'd seen plenty of the earlier one because it came on right after the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and I loved the end of this show, with the whole second series having been a dream. ("Dallas" did it to only one season and everyone hated that but love this.) This last scene somehow sort of validated my having skipped that second series.

  • 2:30 A pre-Drew Carey Kathy Kinney

  • QUIET!!!

  • Sheer brilliance. Didn't the airline pilot make a cameo at the end too?

  • When I first saw this scene years ago, my jaw dropped. Brilliant to say the least.

  • The best closing scene to a Sit-com ever!

  • when will you show us the whole episode or you can show us its download link

  • the best...didnt work on st.elsewhere.....on time ....was a trip when i saw it i wasjust old enough to have seen the 1st bob newhart show....rest in peace susan

  • the best...didnt work on st.elsewhere.....on time ....was a trip when i saw it i wasjust old enough to have seen the 1st bob newhart show....

  • 3:03 EB farnum!

  • The curtain call end credits are reminiscent of the last Mary Tyler Moore show as it was originally broadcast. It looks as if the final "Newhart" may havetaken it's cue from that.

  • @cmulwee001 Not too surprising as Newhart was an MTM Enterprises production.

  • WOW! Lisa Kudrow in the black...

  • Yes, the best Series finale ever, It will take a lot to beat this. "What do you mean beautiful blonde?" Suzanne Pleshette is amazing. God bless her and RIP. I loved both shows.

  • I called the ending on this before it showed. I knew it was going to be a dream (like on Dallas) with Bob/Dick in bed with Emily. I really liked all the characters on this show, especially Stephanie and that funny sound she used to make (EWWW).

  • hey that's mimi

  • What a hilarious ending to a classic show 20 years ago last month. Bob Newhart is truly funny . I miss Julia Duffy so much and so does Tom Poston and his lovely wife Suzanne Pleshette. Newhart is one hilarious show that ran from 1982-1990. Look for it on DVD and see what you've been missing.

  • It's not funny because it was a dream...it was funny AND memorable because of the suprise element. Plus, you gotta remember, a lot of the shows viewers were older people who had watched Bob's first show in the 70's...so it was a treat for them to see the two actors of that show together again..

memorable, probably not for the kids of this age...but for us back then, it really was. As you can tell by the audience reaction of the last scene.

  • god i loved julia, i was only like 6 but i still new i wanted to eat her ass......

  • Last episode of Blackadder (goes forth) is my personal favorite.

Having laughed so much during the series, those last images made me feel gutted.

  • not that funny. maybe it was back in the 80's. also...this is one of the 'most memorable series finales of all time'? cmon. omgg it was a dream woow. Dallas did it before them.

only watching because LOSSTT (ACTUALLY the best finale of all time)

  • @thegreatyamaijo Your response is the reason this planet is so fucked up. You are the problem. They knew it had been done before. Thats why it is so funny. They did it to be funny. This is the best, funniest finale ever. No one saw it coming. Bob Newhart isa genious. You kids need to look up what came before. This is comic genious.

  • I'm here because of Lost!

  • lol good work Lost. :D

  • greatest ending ever....take that LOST

  • @joetodaro LOST's ending was about 1000 times better than this!

  • @adamriggins5108 You should have seen the alternate endings on Jimmy Kimbal after the show. ;-)

  • @adamriggins5108 comments like this is why the terroists hate us

  • @adamriggins5108

Don't think so, Newhart was classic, LOST was BS.

  • wow -- 20 years ago today! crazy!! May 21, 1990!

  • Best Episode Ever!

  • Scare Factor:High To Nightmare-Unless You're Afraid Of Mimsie Saying "QUIET!"

  • Boom Mike at 2:50

  • "Quiet!" was an okay line, but I would've had the first and second Darryls say respectively, while squinting, "Ladies!" "Please stop!"

  • This is amazing. LOL!!!

  • Probably just as well the whole thing was a dream. L, D and D deserved much better...

  • Oh, Ive got to favorite this one! Darryl and Darryl finally speak!!!

  • i like in the end where all the cast cuts the cake.

  • Like the LOST final scene :)

  • It was all just a dream!

  • lisa kudrow is one of the sisters

  • My favorite scene from my favorite show

  • Kind of odd that Suzanne Pleshette wasn't mentioned in the credits...although I suppose anyone who "got" the ending would know exactly who that was in bed with Bob anyway.

  • @mdumas43073

She also didn't appear as part the curtain call cast as the credit's are rolling e either, though I think she should have been there

  • easy...

    THE BEST SERIES FINALE EVER!!!!!!

  • @Fastboy007 sorry... LOST had the best Series Finale

  • @MassiveCuber This is why I consider this the FUNNIEST last episode ever.

  • @Fastboy007 Heck, it was the best SERIES ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • GREAT!!!

  • This will be on this Sunday on WGN (11/22) at 8:30 p.m. eastern time. Can't wait to see the whole thing.

  • This was one of my favorite family TV-viewing moments as a kid. As soon as the bedroom scene come up, my parents just ROARED!!! My little brother and I were both too young to remember the 70s Bob Newhart show (born in '77 and '74 respectively) and never saw it on syndication so we were confused! Why was Bob in bed with this brunette?! Our parents barely caught their breath enough to explain.

I'm now 35 in Chicago catching up with the 70s incarnation thanks to DVD and our retro TV station.

  • CLASS!

  • I loved both of the Newhart comedy series. But for me, the original with Suzanne Pleshette, her husband Tom Posten and some other great character actors was the best. Seeing the flashback ending to the second series was great, but at the same time, we knew it was really The End and that was sad.

  • Great post eqality ! This is the best ending for a tv series EVER !

Thanks David - you know how much I love this ! And you do too !!

  • Great fun. Never seen this before. Thanks and thanks to David (dlpine71) for sharing. 5***** ☺

  • The very best of any series finale EVER!!

HILARIOUS!!!!!! Thanks for posting, egallity!! Many stars**********!!!!!!!!

  • The funniest ending to any show anywhere ever. Truly a brilliant piece of work. Where is the DVD? I mean really, where is the DVD?

  • thanks for posting - not sure why I tubed this but sure made me laugh again...great, great ending

  • Isn't that Lisa Kudrow as one of the Darryl's brides? The one in the middle.

  • Yep. Wikipedia confirms it.

  • Yes, she was the one playing Sada. If you watched the credits at the end, she was listed.

  • Unbelievable, Yeah it's Lisa Kudrow. I never caught that before. Thanx.

  • and that's Mimi from Drew Carey.

  • She was Miss Goddard before she was Mimi. It'\s really Kathy Kinney.

  • I totally forgot about that.

  • My family talked about this episode for years! Thanks for posting!! Great memories.

  • We Can Work It Out, We Can Work It Out.

  • Lisa Kudrow in black.

  • The ending was written 3 years before it aired-I just heard Bob say it 30 sec ago on a live radio interview-His wife came up with it when he was unhappy with CBS and wanted to get out then-Brilliant!!!

  • This is way for a series finale to go out!!!! Credit to the writers... After about 20 years this ending still to me is the best series finale I've seen.... Fingers crossed for LOST in 2010

  • AMEN!!!!!

  • I remember this. BEST ending of all shows.

  • a wonderful ending to a wonderful show!!

  • QUIET QUIET QUIET!

  • BEST finale ever.

  • QUIET!!!

  • Oh, man, thanks for posting this! The part where the two Darryls finally speak one word in the entire series is pricless. And the final scene is just brilliant.

  • QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
