I was born in Cape Canaveral and raised in Orlando. The Space Shuttle program has meant so much to us here in Central Florida, its sad to see it end. It represents, not only what we can accomplish as Americans, but as humans. Good luck and Godspeed Discovery and crew. @AlanMolstad OK. I listened to the post launch press conference, and NASA is aware of some incidents with insulation - but stated they are all within normal expected things. What I saw was from the on board external camera well into launch, just prior to main booster separation. Appeared to be 3 black tiles drop down between the orbiter & booster, but the video quality wasn't that good, happened quickly, so don't know. Thanks for sharing your info. Will let ya know if I learn anything new.

I was watching the liftoff live, and there was a moment when I saw something big flap around for a moment, then get swept away.

What i saw looked like a very large section of ice or foam...perhaps a foot to 3 foot square and a few inches thick.

It seemed like it snagged for a second then was gone.
