@Rizrsniper Foam from the fuel tank. It happens on just about every launch, but it's less of a concern when it happens in the upper atmosphere; which it did.
I was in break from school here in MA and I went down to Englewood Florida to see family and I got to see this take off my grandpa said "god bless America" and he was damn right, can someone answer my question to, will there be any more space shuttles going to space with people on them? Sad to watch a mighty bird like this take its final flight, how I would have loved to have been there to see it live.
Let's hope that NASA and other space organisations push forward with new ambitions and renewed impetus, because right now there is a void, to pull an old quote...
“The Earth is the cradle of mankind, but one cannot remain in the cradle forever.”
@mozzaman Thanks Obama for stopping Human beings leading space program. I really appreciate the changes you made. especially wiping out the middle class and making everyone rely on the government,
which is the communism you spoke of "distribute the wealth"
Well.. Looks like the Russians won the space race in the end since now we'll have to pay them to send our citizens into space... Tortoise and the Hare..
i dislike this video why because its one of the final launches unless somebody does something about it because otherwise no future generations will be able to see the amasing thing called a space shuttle launch it is one life changing experience
I was born in Cape Canaveral and raised in Orlando. The Space Shuttle program has meant so much to us here in Central Florida, its sad to see it end. It represents, not only what we can accomplish as Americans, but as humans. Good luck and Godspeed Discovery and crew. Thank you for your sacrifice and heroism in the name of exploration, the most noble of human deeds. I pray that you return home safe and that this isn't the last time humanity ventures into the final frontier. Here's to STS-133.
@GrimReaperTheXIII The Space Program isn't over, it's just being handed over to the private sector, which means a lot more money will be invested into it! :)
Killing the space program is a huge mistake, but of course to Obama it's necessary to kill off the idea of American exceptionalism. We're no better than anyone else, no more innovative, no more energetic, no more optimistic ... no...no...no we can't.
Here we see the last shuttle flight, brought to you by our imbecile-in-chief BO, who defunded NASA and directed them to fight global warming instead of exploring space!
@brent1125 I actually work for NASA and I can tell you that what you think is not the sentiment at all among NASA employees... actually, most NASA employees were very pissed off when Pres. Bush took away funding for a lot of science missions in order to fund Project Constellation... and now they're happy that the money has finally been restored to their science missions.
You can think it's a waste of money, but a reason for humans to live is to explore and find out the meanings and origins of our creation and universe. Unless we change our ways and means of consumption, the Earth will run out of resources and the only place to go is up..
The end of an era of hope and of man's nobler aspirations. This, more than any hollow words from a man seeking office, says "yes, we can." And now that he is there, I look to the stars and hear, 'no, you won't."
It's a crying shame we have had no leadership in recent history with any sort of foresight to continue "properly funded" space exploration. We ALL benefit from the discoveries made from space exploration. It's our fault - we keep sending the same clowns to Washington with no clue. I will continue to let the idiots who supposedly represent me know I want us in space.
I would wager that as soon as our last Space Shuttle returns home, the Russians will declare that they have no money to maintain the ISS. It is likely that the last crew will die a cold and lonely death up there, sad to say.
@zippyman818 Russia has so much money, they won't go broke. "Russia's debt is at $76 billion - less than 1% of the United States' $8.4 trillion." They have more rich families then any other countries in the world.
NASA still using that big chunk of shit to escape gravity shows how fucking stupid the whole program is, since it's really all a nuclear war game. With lithium technology, nano cells, polymer ect... they still use some 1960's machine, and rape you for your cash!? Ha ha ha ha, kill the NASA program... then get your money back.
@darrendog I don't know about that... I'm thinking being strapped in the fucking thing is probably better (assuming H2 tank o-rings are working well and what not).
Anybody watching the NASATV live cam during ascent notice at apx. 4:58 PM & 38 seconds eastern, a few pieces of blackish, square shape looking debris go past the camera?
@AlanMolstad OK. I listened to the post launch press conference, and NASA is aware of some incidents with insulation - but stated they are all within normal expected things. Will let ya know if I learn anything new.
@AlanMolstad Hey Alan, I found a video posted here on Youtube "Space Shuttle Discovery - Nasa's Final Launch 2011". On that video at just after 5:00 min into the video, I's probably what I saw. I'm no expert, but aren't those heat tiles coming off?
@jesusantoniogb oh you mean that same technology that allows you today to use satellite for internet, phone, etc, etc? Yeah, you got your share, so shut up :)
The shuttles have been flying for over 20yrs if they were a airliner they would have already been retired. It was time to stop before we had anather catostrophic shutttle failure.
Watched it with my son here in Florida and to think its the last one is just heartbreaking but we are the ones that can say we did it first we went to the moon first and went into space first!
@BuiltFordTough2011 I saw it too, from my backyard, just the contrail. But, BTW, we did make it to the moon first, however, the Ruskies beat us into space with the Sputnik Satellite, and Yuri Gagarin being the first human to reach space, as well as the first human to orbit the earth.
@sakar181 You can thank the government for wasting over a trillion of your tax dollars on war-mongering. Isn't it sad when so much money is wasted on killing people, when it could have been used for new discoveries and improving people's lives?
@fog0death I agree about the government spending way too much money on wars and not enough on science. However, the shuttle program itself is outdated, way too expensive, and overly dangerous compared to what we could be doing. Hopefully new programs will greatly expand our discoveries in space.
Do you remember the part in the Apollo 13 movie where it was said that "Power is Everything"? You know something, that is true - very true. Without it, you don't have the power to have space programs like that. Without it, you don't have industry. If you don't dominiate it, you will instead be dominated by those that do.
Now ask yourself again: why do you think that war took place?
@itsgomes90 Made for some spectacular explosions footage on YouTube, for one, an excellent entertaninment source for alleviating those boring moments.
So watching people die for one's pleasure is entertainment to you? Do you get off to crap like that? That is flat out sickening and people like you need to be checked out.
Sure, it's entertaining. That's why people flock to watch footage of disasters, because it is interesting; the information entertains the mind. Many people like to pretend they don't have a morbid fascination, but those people are mostly liars.
As for those that died, well, it sucks to be them. I wouldn't like to trade positions. But the results are a consequence of what they chose to do, so they have only themselves to blame. I'm not obligated to feel sorry for them.
@fog0death What, you want to waste a trillion $ PER YEAR on making new discoveries and improving American's lives and not killing people? What is wrong with you? You must be un-patriotic. Next I suppose you'll want your emails and browsing to be private, and to stop having your whereabouts tracked by cell carriers and handed over to the FBI.
@fog0death I agree with you 100% just NUKE the people we are fighting with right now and bring our solders back home to there faimlies and lets ues the moneys to go to Mars with real poeple and not robots and see if we can find oil, gold, or some other type of life...
@fog0death actually the reason NASA is being defunded is because Obama cut most federal funding, instead redirecting NASA to become a company aimed at fighting global warming.
Which really sucks, considering NASA had long planned to send astronauts back to the moon :/
@brent1125 Could you just let me know how you know this? I've tried looking this up on the net but can't find anything - I'm fascinated, so could you drop a weblink or something into my inbox?
Obama swapping NASA's priorities in favour of global warming - what the hell?
@fog0death Would you prefer the al Qaeda maintaing the ability to attack innocent people all over the world, and having Saddam in power, a leader who has hundreds of thousands of innocent deaths/executions on his hands?
@sakar181 "it". It doesn't have a particular sex, as it's a spaceship. It does kinda look like a giant penis though, I'll give you that, though you see it as a she? That is curious. Is it the engine bells instead that do it for you? Those smooth, well-lubed, round gaping holes sat there wide-open between those two, taught, SRB legs? Each to their own, I guess...
How many "G's" do you get when blasted into space. ?

@fog0death actually the reason NASA is being defunded is because Obama cut most federal funding, instead redirecting NASA to become a company aimed at fighting global warming.
Which really sucks, considering NASA had long planned to send astronauts back to the moon :/

@brent1125 Could you just let me know how you know this? I've tried looking this up on the net but can't find anything - I'm fascinated, so could you drop a weblink or something into my inbox?
Obama swapping NASA's priorities in favour of global warming - what the hell?

@sakar181 "it". It doesn't have a particular sex, as it's a spaceship. It does kinda look like a giant penis though, I'll give you that, though you see it as a she? That is curious. Is it the engine bells instead that do it for you? Those smooth, well-lubed, round gaping holes sat there wide-open between those two, taught, SRB legs? Each to their own, I guess...
