Also, why are the Indian restaurants so poor in Edinburgh?!
Why is there not one single indian curry shop in Edinburgh that can make Chicken Tikka Chasni properly?! Most Indian take aways and restaurants in Edinburgh dont have it on the menu or they dont even know how to make it properly.
so if you want a good Chicken Tikka Chasni curry you have to go to Glasgow.
Again Edinburgh is dysfunctional and unproductive and ill serves the locals.
Edinburgh has the same problem has London, Tel Aviv, Paris and rome , in that interlopers have come into these cities and bought up and hoarded an insane amount of flats and homes and made it very difficult for locals to actually live and work in their own city.
In Edinburghs case over 30,000 flats/homes lie empty for close to nine months of the year and are only occupied in the summer by non scots. This has led to Edinburgh losing its scottish identity.
bad thing but just pointing out the fact that Edinburgh is flooded with people from all over the world because they are in the main tourists and not residents!
All these posts about Edinburgh not having a Scottish population are absurd. Of course as the capital city it is more cosmopolitan than the country as a whole but it is still Scottish. In the 2001 census 95.9% of the population identified as white compared with 98.8% for Scotland as a whole. Only 22% of the city's population were born outside of Scotland and of those the largest group were the English amounting to just 12.1% of the population. I'm making no comment as to whether it is a good or
Edinburgh is more Arty Farty, packed with middle class students/proffessionals,similar to Cambridge/Oxford,but much larger.Definetly worth a visit.
Glasgow is more,a cosmopolitan, modern city, similar to Dublin, with a river through it,much better motorway access and much more variety of nightlife in the city centre,Merchant city,West end. Also worth a visit.
Ideally,spend 1 week up here,split between the 2,as they are only 1 hour apart(bus/train)
I was going to move to edinburgh, but something is not right with the city anymore. Dont get me wrong the whole world should unite and be one, cultures make a culture. But somethings not right. Its static.
@Oxgangs1966, i dont understand why you think i am trolling. I am merely stating fact. Edinburgh is no longer a scottish city with an indigenous scottish population. Its full of English interlopers who have hoarded an insane amount of flats and homes pushing locals out of Edinburgh, a continuous influx of dirty tanned pornotrash latino whores who stink out the city during the festival season, and an infrastructure that isnt geared to serving the locals needs.
Actually i dont think there is even any Glaswegians in Edinburgh either. Because of the social engineering and manipulated housing market, Edinburgh has been ethnically cleansed of large areas of indigenous scots. Most of the accents you will hear in Edinburgh are the ones of home counties english accents of all the private school freaks who have bought holiday flats in Edinburgh which they then proceed to use only during the fesitval season.
@pluto4847 well when we figured out how to fry food, we tried to fry everything. One of our most famous food inventions was the deep fat fried Mars Bar. As you can imagine a major shock to our waist lines and our hearts. We might have the lowest life expectancy but we have great humor, we know how to party and a good Scottish motto is F**K IT! We might not live as long but we know how to live life!
Edinburgh is London's bitch. London ,however, fears Glasgow.
Also has a side note, the Fringe and Festival have slowly devolved into a human sh*t magnet over the last 5 years. Edinburgh during August is populated by boarding /private school freaks who cant interact with people properly. Also take into consideration the amount of wretched foreign trophy wives and sex tourists that stink out Edinburgh too in summer. During the summer Edinburgh attracts the type of person that you would happily torture with a clawhammer.
The best way to describe Edinburgh is that its a city in Scotland, but its no longer a scottish city.
The demographic in Edinburgh has changed so much , that a genuine scot is an ethnic minority in Edinburgh. Because of private landlords about 30,000 flats lie empty for close to nine months of the year and only get occupied during the festival premium criminal prices that would make Fagin out of Oliver Twist smile.
To sum up Edinburgh is a mini London (in all the wrong ways
Tip of the day (literally..) if you are going to Edinburgh for a holiday check out the Royal British Hotel on Princes Street. Its pretty run down but its cheap and if you get a room at the front of the hotel youve got a fantastic view of the castle and arthur seat. You can also smoke on the balcony . Open the window and step out for an alfresco smoke with a view of the castle. about 50 quid a night.
Its a fair summary. Lonely planet tends to be the best at these things, warts and all. Its my home city and can be a fine place to visit and wander around. It can be dreary away from the summer though, and the pub culture can get a bit tiring.
Ha this guy likes the Scottish parliament? If he lived in Edinburgh he wouldn't be to happy with how much money was wasted on it, And dont let me start on the tram :p
Well, I would not say Edinburgh is influenced by England -- that sort of statement is pointless. Edinburgh has a history worth reading about -- particularly about the Enlightenment. Glasgow and Edinburgh are often compared -- this comparison is not necessary. I would, however, agree that Edinburgh is snobbish, but don't let the people put you off. Glasgow is traditionally viewed as having a friendlier demeanour, but, not to take away from Glasgow, it is merely that Edinburgers can be stuck-up.
I love Edinburgh. It's such a cosmopolitan friendly place. It's well worth scratching the surface to see the real Edinburgh not just the tourist veneer. Stay a while if you can. That's coming from a Glasgow fan. Both cities are very different, but both pay real dividends if you spend time getting to know them.
Edinburgh = Tourists and other foreigners, souless with Tartan Packaging, everyone out of Edinburgh does not like Edinburgh apart from the city itself, the people, no, their either snobs or not Scottish/Celtic period.
Yea but Glasgow looks like a whores knickers, a sweaty rag of a city. @bau06109 Depends what you like for night life. Glasgow is definitely better for music - more bands play there, better venues, better and bigger local music scene, etc.

@buckstoneboy i've lived in both cities, I'm just giving my personal experience. Edinburgh is very snobby and stuck up. Glasgow is influenced by Ireland and Edinburgh is influenced by England. That's why both cities are so different. Maybe you should do your research instead of spitting out the dummy!

I went to stockbridge primary school! and Broughton high school which is a 5 min walk from the pizza express in stockbridge which is that old looking building by the river with the parasols you see in the video, great area, i didn;t appreciate it when I was younger walking through stockbridge everyday but I do now and appreciate the influence it had on me as a kid whether i picked up on it or not
A tourist would never need to go to Niddrie, Greendykes, Pilton, Muirhouse, these areas are bad because there are lots of anti social youth binge drinking and running around with golf clubs looking for somthing to do because they have fuck all else to do, literally. these are kids that make these areas bad. you would not have a problem in these areas if you kept yourself to yourself and did not act "hard"/the big man and don't get pulled into a confrontation with these kids/"neds"
I love Edinburgh, has to be my faverate british city. the night life and the touristy stuff are magic but like any other city its always better to stay in the city centre as ive heard there is a darker side to Edinburgh away from the centre such as Leith and Wester Hailes housing estates.
I find it funny that this man reckons it's not a British city because it's not cut off, on a little island when London is one of the most (if not THE most) cosmopolitan and international city in the world.
Can someone who's been to Glasgow enlighten me on what makes it so horrendous? I was at Edinburgh and was asking for day trips to Glasgow (b/c, you know, I've heard of it), and the travel agency person was like "why would you want to go to Glasgow?"
@wasilaify gaelscot pretty much summed it up for you, Glasgow has a better night-life, better clubs, bigger shopping centres, good for buying clothes. on the downside the Glaswegian accent is very hard to understand for a foreigner, there is a knife culture in glasgow, a gang culture to go with it who commit senseless crimes often towards each other, not tourists, just keep to yourself and don't give anyone any greif and you will be as sound as a pound, the people are friendly and very talkative
I'm studying in Edinburgh, without hesitation i can say, the best place to study and enjoy life! When the sun is shinning the meadows and princess street gardens are the place to be! and when there's rain just sitting at coffee shops or pubs with your mates can be the best time you've ever had!

i want to move to Edmburgh once i finish college, i think is a really great place to live., the only problem is that i don't know anyone from there =s
Oh for god sake I've been to Scotland a few times & going again on Thursday & absolutely nobody listens to their traditional music there! Don't try to give people a bad stereotype view of Scotland cause its really really nice & very different to England!
I'm from Dundee, but Edinburgh is the true east coast city. My town has been infested with glasgow trash and thugs. Real dundee and angus people feel happier in Edinburgh than in our own town now, which used to be cool like Edinburgh. Fuck Glasgow and the pikey west coast. Ald riki forever!
Such a beautiful city! The Edinburgh band Universal You made a video for their new single Iskala that involves a lot of the famous streets of Edinburgh too....and a well known pub too...can anyone name it!??!
In 2008 I visited both London and Edinburgh. London is like a small planet Earth prototype. People from every place: Spanish, Africans, Muslins, Jews, Asians … many Brazilians… it's an international city. I felt like in high school years, when I used to travel to the beach where I always met my classmates. In Scotland I really felt I was outside. But I enjoyed both cities. No way to dislike LDN town.
Something weird happened to me right now. I got up to go the restroom, when I came back 3 minutes later, a postcard of Edinburgh was next to the computer and Youtube was at this site. There's nobody at my house right now. Even stranger is the fact that the postcard was sent to me 14 years ago by my Grandma, R.I.P.
Edinburgh is the best city in scotland easily.....august is the best month..finding somewhere to stay if you havent booked is a big problem...one of the worlds best festivals lasts all of august..street theatre..arts festivals...comedy shows with the best the world has to offer for a right good laugh...and real serious pubs with the best beer in the world......the talent is no too bad as well.
@buckstoneboy See, I'm from Dundee so I can't be Biest. I think Glasgow is the best city by a mile. It's the music capital, bbc, best concerts, the shopping is 2nd best in the UK, very modern...and this day and age It's very safe. Just like Edinburgh it's very studenty like in the west end and city centre. A feel of green and life.
However, Edinburgh is pretty, historical, more cultured which so that will attract more tourists.
This is not about Edinburgh. It is about the picture postcard, tourist city centre.
He doesn't mention that Edinburgh has some of the worst slums in Europe, is full of drug addicts and has one of the highest HIV/Aids rates in Europe. Funny that.
@MrBrassbull I have absolutely no interest what race or nationality you are. You have demonstrated beyond necessity your utter racist stupidity. Grow up! Goodbye.
@liuzhou probably cos its not true I'm assuming that you walk around with a blindfold on cos the last 10 year all over Scotland they have raised that type of estate HIV rate is way higher in London proportionately and the level of drug abuse is a myth
this looks like it was filmed when the festival was on. best coming to Edinburgh before these trams get installed its going to ruin the place thats all im saying!!
Any time's a good time for Edinburgh, just bring a warm sweater and an umbrella just in case... And make sure to go down to 1 Infirmary Street, there's a pub called The Royal Oak, which is the best folk pub in Scotland. Slainte!
@63blessed it's great. me and my brother went through to edinburgh on hogmanay a few years ago. had a great day of boozin then came back through to glasgow about 7ish before the bells. met a load of brazilians on the train too had a good feel about it. course edinburgh is more famous for new years but either city will do. you'll enjoy should give it a real though
I'm planning to go around may sometime. scotland just pulls me in! I've been to the scotland-holland match and ever since then I wanted to get back. I'm thinking about 2days edinburgh-1 day glasgow-1day edinburgh.. so I can revisit the Iron horse.. any advice?

@buckstoneboy i've lived in both cities, I'm just giving my personal experience. Edinburgh is very snobby and stuck up. Glasgow is influenced by Ireland and Edinburgh is influenced by England. That's why both cities are so different. Maybe you should do your research instead of spitting out the dummy!
jpbackintown 10 months ago
@jpbackintown Think you'll find both cities are mainly influenced by Scotland - in its different ways.

I went to stockbridge primary school! and Broughton high school which is a 5 min walk from the pizza express in stockbridge which is that old looking building by the river with the parasols you see in the video, great area, i didn;t appreciate it when I was younger walking through stockbridge everyday but I do now and appreciate the influence it had on me as a kid whether i picked up on it or not
exizzz 1 year ago
A tourist would never need to go to Niddrie, Greendykes, Pilton, Muirhouse, these areas are bad because there are lots of anti social youth binge drinking and running around with golf clubs looking for somthing to do because they have fuck all else to do, literally. these are kids that make these areas bad. you would not have a problem in these areas if you kept yourself to yourself and did not act "hard"/the big man and don't get pulled into a confrontation with these kids/"neds"

I was there in 1971, our hotel was on Princess St. right across from
the park and the castle, with the lights on the castle at night it
made quite an impression.

@gaelscot Aye, but there's neds here in Edinburgh, too....
sabradan 1 year ago

No way to dislike LDN town.
berfariabrazil 1 year ago
Something weird happened to me right now. I got up to go the restroom, when I came back 3 minutes later, a postcard of Edinburgh was next to the computer and Youtube was at this site. There's nobody at my house right now. Even stranger is the fact that the postcard was sent to me 14 years ago by my Grandma, R.I.P.

Edinburgh is the best city in scotland easily.....august is the best month..finding somewhere to stay if you havent booked is a big problem...one of the worlds best festivals lasts all of august..street theatre..arts festivals...comedy shows with the best the world has to offer for a right good laugh...and real serious pubs with the best beer in the world......the talent is no too bad as well.
buckstoneboy 1 year ago 11
@buckstoneboy See, I'm from Dundee so I can't be Biest. I think Glasgow is the best city by a mile. It's the music capital, bbc, best concerts, the shopping is 2nd best in the UK, very modern...and this day and age It's very safe. Just like Edinburgh it's very studenty like in the west end and city centre. A feel of green and life.
However, Edinburgh is pretty, historical, more cultured which so that will attract more tourists.
It all depends on what you like really :--)))
jpbackintown 11 months ago
This is not about Edinburgh. It is about the picture postcard, tourist city centre.
He doesn't mention that Edinburgh has some of the worst slums in Europe, is full of drug addicts and has one of the highest HIV/Aids rates in Europe. Funny that.
