  • Key is a little too high for him.

  • Was Eddy Holland thwe one who performed this splendid song the first time?

  • FABULOUS .

  • what a voice class

  • How could anyone out write Holland Dozier Holland?

  • I can see the transition between this original verson and the version the Doobie Bros. did. I can see it, I can feel it, and to me (in my opinion), the Doobies tried and I beleive succeded in caputuring the original soul and feeling of the song, and kept it in tact. The Doobies seemed to add a little more "snap" if you will in the style of playing, but seemed to capture the soul and feeling of the original. Marc Trainor

  • I see why the 4 tops and Holland dozier Holland was a music marriage made in Motown heaven, He has a Levi style of vocal ,levi's voice was just ten times more powerful!~

  • Great song, great arrangement, great vocal performance, and great performances from all of the session players. This is where it's at.

  • Eddie was a beast! Great Songwriter and superb vocalist! Gone Man!

  • The best version of this song I have heard is Charity Brown's 1975 recording.

  • @BILLYZ95993 Thom Bell, Linda Creed, Leon Huff, and Kenny Gamble penned like Holland Dozier Holland, and proved it with the success they had in the 70's. They were number one in the seventies, were having more hits than Motown in the 70's. Holland Dozier Holland had their own label in the early 70's, had some hits, but couldn't duplicate their 60's success. I love HDH, but don't act like there aren't any other greats.

  • LOv Detroit!with all the musical history n thz city...it would b wonderful if these musical greats would come back & lend their talents 2 the composition of a Detroit Youth Choir. We should hav an outstanding choir that exceeds that of Chicago. Withall the negative news lately, it could b what is needed 2 sav r babies. After all most r descendents of the Motown legacy. Thz is how those musical greats from the Motown label &Detroit spin offs labels could contribute by becoming change agents.

  • great intro

  • Holland/Dozier/Holland should be required subject for every music student. At the very least an essay on how much influence their songs have had and still have in the music business. These guys know their stuff. Much of what they do has so much appeal that they redefine the term "crossover" hit. And single song from them could make a career. They are that good.

  • What a classic!

  • Kim's version is so much superior! Better voice!

  • Kim's version is so much superior! Better voice!

  • Its not fair to say they didn't promote him enough. He cut about a dozen singles from 59-64.

  • I love Holland, I love JW, too bad Holland didn't keep singing or should I say, too bad MOTOWN, didn't promote him enough.

  • Wow, great song by a songwriting legend!

That's very strange, did anyone else notices he's clearly giving the devil salute on the cover of his album? I guess Ronnie James Dio is full of shit.

Everywhere you look, you can see celebrities flashing the mano cornuta. Eddie Holland wrote many of the best lyrics of all time. Judging from that hand sign he's throwing, can we assume he worships Satan? Rock has always been pretty Satanic. I guess Jerry Lee Lewis was right about that.

  • This is really fabulous. Makes me think of what Levi Stubbs could have done with this song. Notice that the arrangement is virtually identical to Kim Weston's? If it weren't for a tiny difference here or there, you might think Motown simply used the same instrumental track for Holland and Weston.

  • This is one classic artists that could have done it all songwriter and fantastic singer! I wish he would have cut a modern cd now he has that classic voice that unforgettable BIGBADLAMONT

  • I'm a stone cold Motown, soul freak, and for some reason, I don't remember hearing this song until I heard the Doobies do it, but God Bless Dosier-Holland for releasing a soulful version of it, I guess the original version. Great song!! Marc Trainor.

  • cool tune. I like Eddie's version better than the Isley Bros and Doobie Bros. I think Kim Weston did the best version though!! All versions are good though, just Kim Weston's is the MOST AWESOME!!!

  • I totally agree

the song ir classical motown sound

  • Wow, this is great. Glad to see the many places where the Doobies get their influences. They opened with this song last week in LA when they opened for the Allman Brothers. It makes you look at today's pop music and realize how regurgitated it is.

  • THIS VERSION IS GOOD, but thank you Holland-Dozier-Holland for giving this tune to Kim Weston, she really put a spin on that one!!

  • thanks for this, I never new it existed ! Still love Kim Weston's version even if she doesn't Raleigh. It's a great song to rock n roll to.

  • I like the DOOBIE BROTHERS version much better.

  • Like theirs too, but not in the same league as Kim Weston's version...

  • YES! this is actually the only version of this song according to me, it was the first one i heard and thus when i heard the others they all seemed almost timid.

  • I recently talked to Kim Weston at a gospel brunch here in Detroit and she stated that her favorite of hers was "Nobody".

    Kris Peterson

  • I had never heard his version before! Great stuff! H-D-H are more than music royalty!!! They should have long ago gotten a Kennedy Center Award and certainly, they should be as rich, if not richer, as Berry Gordy!!!!!

  • It hasn't been mentioned yet, and should be, that the writing and producing credits go to Holland, Dozier, Holland....so even though Kim etc sang it later, it's Eddie's baby.

  • GREAT! Pure Motown.

  • Interesting to hear Kim Weston last night on a BBC Radio documentary about Motown state that she never liked 'Take Me in Your Arms'!

Well I do like the song by Weston, Holland, and the Doobies. I don't care what Kim Weston says-- this song rocks!

  • Just when you think you've heard the original...WOW!!! Awesome stuff...I would have never KNOWN....U love this version from the male voice....Kim Weston just torched this song female version IMO....CLASSIC stuff from both and also to The Doobie Brothers as well nice tribute!!

  • wow! I never knew this song was done before Weston & Doobie Brothers! I must have been in day care and missed this awesome version. Thanks for posting this.

  • Superb posting, mapo. Eddie's original is certainly the template for The Doobie Brother's 1975 cover. Amazing production values for a 1964 recording.

  • Eddie is so very talented, a genious....in fact all three of them were Brian and Lamont included. Thanks for posting this gem.

  • the drums are just like their (HDH)supremes single

    "forever came today"

  • Eddie was such a wonderful singer & this track is further proof! Thanks for sharing.

  • spent 28 years on the radio, and am ashamed to say i've never heard this version...heard KIM WESTON'S...i hear the elements of the backing vocals and the arrangement and Tom Johnston and The Doobie Brothers pay a respectful tribute with their hit. how very cool. They are way overdue for induction in to the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. this is GOLD. thanks for letting a fan hear the influence.

  • I first heard this when the Jermaine Jackson sang it. Then I heard the original. Love both!

  • Great track, love it

  • Fab record this. luving it ! cheers

    djdeitch(Dave)

  • brill

  • the Isley Brothers while at Motown did another great version of this song

  • I'm aware of that, yes! It's a good cover indeed but I still prefer Eddie Holland's original version! Take care! MAPO :)

  • Up until 2 min and 46 sec ago I only knew The Doobies and Charity Brown's version: this is AMAZING! Thank you very much for posting it, I really love it! :)

  • My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it! It's a pretty hip version indeed! :-)

  • Thanks for the video. Eddie Holland could really sing!

  • I love Eddie's voice!

To me, it sounds like a cross between Marvin's light tone and Levi's gruff scream!!!

    Great blend!

  • Great glad you liked it! His voice sounds like Jackie Wilson also too...well that's what I think! :)

  • Yeah, it does, especially in the upper range!:)

  • Thanks for telling me about this!:)

Please post this song as a response to mine!!!

    I'll do the same!

  • Did Eddie record this before Kim Weston did?

  • Yes he did! Read the story at the top right about this video!

  • i like Eddie's version as soon as i bought the cd it was issued on, Eddie Holland kicks ass as a singer

  • What's the cd, you found it on?

  • MotownMaster:

I already asked this, but which cd was this version issued on?

  • I said I don't know!!

  • O sorry about that! I didn't know you had two different accounts or do you?

  • I got just one account!

  • O ok. Never mind. Didn't mean to keep asking. Sorry again!

  • a Cellarful of Motown vol.2

  • This is the best version of this classic tune. He used to sing it live back then and it was a swinging tune to hear in person.

  • I bet it was! Wow would have been nice being there! But I wasn't even born then! :)
