  • Better than ever.Thank you.

  • Epic, timeless, Doky Brothers rule!

  • Happy Birthday, Donald!!!

  • You got to shake it baby

  • If music is good, never gets old. After so many years, earing Steely Dan Y still enjoy it.

  • If you listen to the recorded version this is very disappointing .. however still a brilliant performance from the master Donald Fagan ...

  • You're the only one. (having said that, I'll take any of the 3 backup ladies!)

  • I can't tell a Difference between Sipping a Glass of this Steely Dan Concoction or having A brain Surgeon Tinker with My Emotions.

  • This is the kind of cool-cat music that perseveres throughout the ages, never getting old.

  • like the express to the good old days. but not so much the Kirswasser. I'm just saying.,

  • like the express to the good old days.

  • drink kirswasser froma shell....cherry liqueur btw

  • They are brilliant live ... so worth the experience. If you haven't seen them, go if you get a chance. The performances are flawless.

  • In ten more years, Fagan and David Letterman will look like identical twins.

  • @dksculpture Fagan has fangs and sings dreams, Letterman eats chip cookies from his mom Look alikes --so different.

  • Tasty, Jim Pugh!

  • @gregtyoung Nice camera work, btw. Zoom in on the filler chords AFTER the solo...good one.

  • Who is the drummer ?

  • @Madeofplastic Keith Carlock.

  • @pmerendi Thanks ! :-)

  • @Madeofplastic The Amazing Keith Carlock!

  • slowed downed that was hip

  • SVinNJ..... I am not positive but I think a Babylon Sister is something you see when you mix black tar heroin with peyote buttons..... Kind of like "tonight I'm gonna 'chase the dragon' ....... These dudes were taking in all the 70's had to offer my friend!

  • Babylon Sisters are two cities by the sea. San Francisco and Oakland CA ... listen again ... preferably a better recording than this one ... but this will do

  • Can someone tell what a Babylon Sister is?

  • Dazzling.....

  • Tem uma hora, aos 2,34 minutos que ele pede "three cachaça S. Francisco". Pode ver!

  • STEELY DAN/Babylon Sisters

    マイフェイバリット、スティーリーダン。

  • Best song they ever did. So soulful. and done with passion

  • @sizedoctor Yeah, that "deformity" has really ruined his life, hasn't it?

  • What a beautiful song

  • I was at this show; insanely good.

the '96 show at the same venue was better, though.

    #@!

  • You would think that with all the money Steely Dan makes he can afford a decent plastic surgery.but, he just wants to live with that deformity in his face. great band.

  • @sizedoctor plastic surgery sometimes results in a "mask" a horrific deformity that makes the person's face look lifeless and motionless. everyone should appreciate the way they turned out, unless you have some horrific deformity caused by injury or something equally horrible, play with hand your dealt.

  • @sizedoctor who cares what he looks like, or rather who's business to question what he should do with hes money?

  • Has there ever been a cooler intro? Wow

  • @guitarist3813 Drive west on Sunset is my favorite line, turn that jungle music down, Ive made that drive many times

  • I was 16 living in the Sunshine Coast QLD Australia...and Aja had just come out..Nothing reminds me more of freedom, happiness, preciseness, and youth more than Steely Dan.. I had the pleasure of seeing them in Brisbane 2 years ago...and i loved the back up singers.. I wished I were one of them...one of them was so young..even though she had the feeling, I wondered how she could have the true feeling if she hadn't been born yet...

  • This song is unbelievably good. One of the best. Such a nice flow to it.

  • awesomely awesome

  • Damn, I'm glad I didn't discover Steely Dan earlier . . . God knows there's not much out there these days, but I can take my time and get to know S D's catalogue.

    Damn, they rock live.

  • @MrZardoz777 I've known Steely Dan since forever... I know their catalogue and every lyric. I'm glad I've known them for 30 years. I judge other tunes by their standard. I've discovered other tunes are crap!

  • MARAVILHA!!!

  • the royal scam is the only one of theirs i owned,on black vinyl, played it to death...phat funky smoky...his voice is awesome....what a mellow opening to this browsing session.

  • jeff porcaros favorates....the creation of rosana

  • @emblem1980 Porcaro actually got the groove for Rosanna...better sit down for this one...from John Bonham! Led Zeppelin's 1979 "Fool in the Rain" No kidding! He said he merely took the slower half-time shuffle, ghosting on the snare drum included, and sped it up.

  • @derosierjr Actually, he said he got it from TWO tunes: Fool In The Rain, and this tune...from Bernard Purdie. And he also used a Bo Diddley influence for the kick drum pattern.

  • @tcbetka Almost forgot...he also mentioned "Home At Last." Another SD tune with Purdie, as I recall.

  • One of the greatest studio groups of all time. Shake It !!!!!!!

  • drive west on sunset to the sea

  • This is the true supergroup in every sense of the word. What a voice for a guy in his sixties. it will never be better than this. perfection is this .

  • Comment removed

  • What a tune! So complex that only Steely Dan can make it sound the way it should. No one should dare do this any different. This is a product of deep thoughts.

  • This drummer cant play the shuffle like BP.....but who can?

  • "here come those santa anna winds again."

  • Love the dan. Keep the music alive!

  • walter becker looks like a guy who builds bombs in his basement... Fagan looks like someone's podiatrist... unlikely pair to write this gorgeous music. respect to The Dan

  • @JerichoDitch2 becker looks like the mad scientist,,, fagan looks like the ecsapee from the mental ward,, and i not sure he didnt and stayed in a motel 6 last night

  • Love love love Steely Dan!

  • the first 50 seconds of this song just make you feel on top of the world, such a sexy song, bloody love you steely dan

  • It's hard to read bad comments about Steely Dan. It sort of cuts and hurts. Please give respect where it's due.

  • hes a genius

  • good stuff

  • Comment removed

  • Great trumbone work, btw, around 4:15.

  • Jim Pugh, everyone!

  • hail to the Be-Bop Daddy!! love fagans shirt

'tell me im the only one........'

  • @thetravellinminstrel they're actually a band out of the Chicagoland area, play Dan-esque stuff

  • ninja ,you will find that most artist who do not sing relaxed(not strained) after yrs of performance it takes it's toll. Steely dan is a original relaxed dude. it comes naturally . he will retain that voice for a long minute he is an awsome dude!

  • steely dan is not a person. just go ask jethro tull, he will tell you. hahahaha.

  • @sixfoot0 --the "dude's" name is Donald Fagan. Steely Dan is a band.

  • @durgaaa It's spelled Fagen.

  • This is my jam!!! That groove is hypnotic.

  • Worked as a recording engineer and live sound mixer during the 70's and 80's. recorded alot of the folks that are on this stage and worked with Purdie on a number of sessions. . Facts are facts. . .yes the guy is very solid. . . but it drags. . . rack it up against the original and it sticks out like a sore thumb . . . excuse me for having high standards. Overall still a great performance but there are better versions of this out there. . .

  • Stop your whining richdys...do you play with Don & Walter?

  • Not my favorite live version of this. Keyboard player muffs the opening and it drags. . . the trick of the Purdie Shuffle is you have to be behind the beat but you still have to be pushing the tempo. Been playing and listening for 30 years and have seen maybe a handful of drummers that can do it. Saw them play this at Jones Beach in 96 and the groove at the end was just transcendant. . . you gotta shake it baby . . .

  • well, yes, nobody can play like Purdie, because well, they aren't Purdie...no reason to diss someone else's playing...this guy is solid...lighten up

  • It's good rock n' roll to me......

AND I LIKE IT, LIKE IT, YES I DO!

  • Brings out that San Diego feeling in me. I look so forward to the Santa Ana winds each winter. Those nights in TJ, and sharing a street taco with some hottie your just spending the weekend with.

  • Drummer Carlock is too behind the beat for Steely Dan, maybe he's tired.

  • A true musician's band without a doubt!

  • Its missing the infamous purdie shuffle , but hey these guys are bloody cool!

  • Well drink cherry brandy (kirschwasser from a shell). Babylon Sister? (The allegorical Babylonian whore?) Shes so fine, so young and wants to know shes the only one. that its just a spasm. (spasm = a temporary burst of energy, activity or emotion.) Shes the cotton candy his friends warn him about. But he goes for it nonetheless regardless of the consequencesthe kid will live and learn, as he watches his bridges burn, from the point of no return.

  • Were I to dissect this tune, Id say it's another song in which Fagen raises the issue of older man/younger chick as in Hey 19. Sounds like she's a flusie! As they drive to the beach, she plays jungle music which he finds a bit embarrassing; an age-difference issue. Their destination is everything shes heard it to be, as he tries to impress her with illusions of jogging with the stars.

  • this guy's voice sounds exactly the same as it is on the album, how? after all these years...

  • @ninjachipzanuff he didn't smoke all that pot like Paul McCartney did....or smoke a lot of something else like Elton John did...

  • For starters is not a great singing voice from a critical stand point. Its whiny and nasal with a touch of Brooklyn. However these songs are incredibly hard to sing because of that. I've heard many cover bands try to sound like him and it just comes of cheesy. No one else can pull it off, its the voice of Steely Dan.. one of the greatest band of all time. I couldn't imagine them with out it.

  • Love the performance, love the song, love the album, love the band...but why the picture of a Centrifugal Turbojet Engine at the end?

  • I was at this show. Steely Dan is great in concert! You have to be a musician to really appreciate how great these guys are.

  • That statement is a many times used phrase of pompous asses. That is simply not true. Why don't you try to prove your point?

  • "Pompous asses" is usually used by people on the outside looking in. If one has never played how one look at it in the same light? Explain colors to a blind person. If one is sightless, how can one experience color? If one can't find a thrill maybe one could buy one?

  • that dude's playing the hi-hat part all slow and weird.

  • You do realize this is a live show, right? It's not going to be exactly the same as the record.

  • yes. it's just that the melody of that shuffle part doesn't come out when it's played like that. that's all.

  • because he's not bernard purdie?

  • drummers have got to shut the fuck up....yeah, you could do better jerkoff

  • get mad about it.

  • class

  • pine knob ampitheatre is now dte music center and showmanship is wonderful, van halen is my favorite band(w/ david lee roth) however the music much more than makes up for the lack of visual aid. STEELY DAN YOU ROCK. they just dont make music like this anymore.

  • I think they manage to do that very rare thing- create something truly beautiful. I am not a big fan of theirs nor am I a jazz buff but I do recognise this simple fact.

  • I can overlook the lack of showmanship...the music speaks for it`self and is superb. A real treat thx fer posting :)

  • thats the good thing about youtube you can stumble on music you havent heard before.

  • Yes, the stage presence thing... well, they were always more of a studio production.

It occurs to me that if Fagen and Becker were physically magnetic, they could have conquered the world.

  • Completely agree. Fagen is so awkward looking on stage. Last year at their Honda Center show in Anaheim, CA he was wearing what looked to be an old corduroy blazer that appear to be 3 or 4 sizes too small. Talented? Absolutely! Stage presence? Not these guys.

  • this one made the cut tonight in durham, amazing show, great to see them in a fairly intimate enviroment

  • The best of the best !!!

  • Mu Major Chord

  • Thanks to joeo78501 ...I was just wondering WHERE are they in this song, and you answered it! Steely Dan posts are wonderful! I think there must be 100 plus chord changes in this song???? every one of them is priceless.

  • really diggin' the chick in the middle, songs could go on for ever..........

  • Me too..

  • Yes Carolyn Lionheart is a great singer and looks hot.... and has done several tours with The Dan.

  • What's the matter with the other two women?

  • how people can say that they are not good live??they are perfect.

  • They just don't have conscious stage presence so much; they play the music and that's it. The music's amazing, but some people don't like the lack of showmanship.

  • He is on the Santa Monica Freeway towards Malibu (Here cms the Snta Anna winds Again)With his young girl excited about the sexual three way(Lves nt a gme fr three) He no longr has much in cmon w thm (turn tht jungle music down)"So Fine So Young" Babylon Sister Shake It.. You got to Shake It Baby, you got to Shk It Bbe,YouGot to Shake It.....

  • how so?

  • Put Simply Its all about just being an awsomely tight band. Cant ask fer no more ! Devastating !

  • it's all about the shuffle

  • When people leave comments about an off Steely Dan performance... its just hard to believe. I mean, the musicianship here is supreme! Listen to the Rhodes, the horns, the background vocalists, the guitarists, the shuffle, and then that bassline.

BTW If they wanted a crooner they had their chance twice (David Palmer and Michael McDonald). Fagens vocal phrasing makes Steely Dan sound so unique and it wouldnt be The Dan any other way. This is a very good performance by a very good band!

  • @coachcdobbs ---Sadly, it is not hard for me to believe that the majority of people who "comment" are simply jerks and fools. They were always there, but do to overpopulation and the internet, we just have to wade through more of them more often. Whadda ya gonna do except spam 'em and get 'em erased?

  • Comment removed

  • @coachcdobbs Instead they would have been "Shelly Mann" or "Penis Whip" acording to the WU5000

  • I love this damn song....I love all of their music

  • love this.......thanks for posting.

    great share sherry!

  • Classic!

  • Its okay to say one of the greatest bands have off nights, or songs. It just so happened to be Babylon Sisters was a little off for Donalds voice that night. Aint no big thang. He tore up "Black cow" that night.

  • "Seems to be about an older guy who takes his young girlfriend to Malibu for a threesome with another young girl and just ends up feeling old."

    You nailed it.

And I could do rounds of Purdie around that kid. Well, we're the same age, but Im here at home smoking black and you tubing, and he's getting the gigs. Guess I should have gone to Berkley, than maybe I would have gotten a break too. We all have our jealous bitter moments. So im not hating. I will at least get my audition dam it.

  • Babylon sisters = fallen women, fallen and degenerate lifestlyles, he realizes he is getting to old for this shallow experiences Conton candy= nose candy (drug' . "Tell me I'm the only One" a delusional refrence about relationships with prostitutes..

  • So subjective, yet authoritative... like a Sunday in Havana... hahahah

    you're an pompous ass...

  • Keith Carlock does a great "Purdy Shuffle"

  • This song just has such a sultry groove beyond anything they had done before. "You gotta shake it, baby!"

  • For the two debating over the black woman thing with this song, I don't know, but I do know that in the recorded song the background singers are black women who are well known in the industry.

  • Babyon refrnce is Biblical about a fallen people, its no scret about idulgent rock lifesytles, he has talked about his indulgent destructive behavior befor ( Kid Charlamagne, tonight when I chase the dragon , r all drug rfernces) he has mentioned his prfrence for fast women (prostitutes) in his songs before. Beanpie gets it.

  • Well thanks for letting me know, I like behind the music moments from people who are true fans. Now that you mentioned it, I do see what you mean. I'm thinking about the lyrics of the song. Oh and who is Beanpie? Like Phil Collins......Did I miss again?. (laughing)

  • languid and bittersweet.

  • GREAT BAND. I Think Doanld Fagen is Underated. He's Up There With Robert Plant And Freedy Mercury.

  • Veery funny.

No I don't think Donald rates so low in any imagined musical hierarchy.

  • He's good, but he's not that good.

Then again, Robert Plant wasn't actually that good either in my opinion, just distinctive. Mercury on the other hand was a born performer.

  • Stop kidding dude. They are playing in different divisions.

    It's OK to like Mercury.

But you can't seriously compare him to Donald.

  • Buy the CD, stick it in some good gear, put the head phones on, lock the door and close your eyes..... freaking AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Great song! It is definitely an acquired taste, though. Brilliant band!

  • Steely Dan is no ordinary band that is for sure! Join the Dandom, its great!

  • There is really no other band that compares!

Let's all collectively pray for a tour in 2009!!

  • I love it!

  • Pen Gillette on keyboards! hahaha

  • You gotta shake it baby. You gotta shake it. Damn, girls.

  • The opening bars are oh so cool. A classic song by one of the greatest groups ever to have played music. Saw them once when they played in Dublin around 97/98.

  • turn that jungle music down ,,,seen donald fagen and steely dan twice in philly

  • One of the absolute best songs. Why are so few watching it? I just don't understand.

  • Love that Shuffle Beat. Bernard Purdie & Jeff Pocaro Rythyms..

  • I was raised in Babylon, NY. About 45 min East of NYC.

  • Babylon in New York state. Sister city of Babylon Mesopotamia?

  • That I wouldn't know, but probably. People from Babylon, ("Islanders") like to visit "The City". I imagine it was the inspiration for the song.

  • Are there any swedes in the Islanders team today? You know like Foppa Forsberg that was in Colorado for a long time before or Sundin in Toronto. Or the iconic player Börje Salming long before?

  • IU'm sorry to seem to express to be misunderstood. I just ranted about swedish hockeyplayers. Sundin and Salming of course never played in New York Islanders. They played in Toronto.

  • Sorry again!

Even Foppa Forsberg didn't play for New York Islanders but rather for Philadelphia Flyers in the dawn of his hockey career.

I don't really know why I have such a hard time to distinguish between those two hockey clubs.

  • A question. Isn't it babylon sister rather than babylon sisters?

Isn't this song about San Francisco?

That's how I always understood it. Even though I'm not even american.

  • "Drive west down Sunset to the sea...".

The song is about Los Angeles. Drive west down Sunset Boulevard and you end up in Malibu at the edge of the Pacific, where you can "jog with show folk on the sand". Also "those Santa Ana winds" - the Santa Ana blows in Southern California, not San Francisco.

"San Francisco show-and-tell" is '70s slang for sex.

Seems to be about an older guy who takes his young girlfriend to Malibu for a threesome with another young girl and just ends up feeling old.

  • Thank you. It really figures better. San Francisco woulden't have been mentioned in a byline if it was about that city. A slight cognitive dissonance there not immidiately recognized. My only excuse is that I do not live there so I couldn't know all details lika that the Santa Ana winds do not reach San Francisco.

  • So I was right in my preposition?

It should rather be Babylon sister in singularis rather than sisters in pluralis. since it is a single city by the name Los Angeles.

I was right after all in my first... hunch or whatever.

  • Maybe babylons sister means black woman? And that the other chick is also black? = Babylon Sisters ^^

  • So you think they sing songs about some of the musicians in the band?

Pretty unusual wouldn't you say? Most songs are much less egotisical than to be about some of the band members. And I regretfully must conclude, som or the less important band musicians.

    Background singers for f--'s sake

  • No?

    Your post:

"So I was right in my preposition?

It should rather be Babylon sister in singularis rather than sisters in pluralis. since it is a single city by the name Los Angeles"

Do you mean that Babylon sister refers to Los Angeles? I disagree. Read vritra123's post.. I think he nails it, just that I think those women are black.. Hence "Babylon Sisters"

  • What the f**k are you talking about. I'm ever more convinced that it's abot Los Angeles the more i figure.

    Black women?

    You got weird fantacies.

  • Well, they dont have to be black. They might just be some outgoing chicks. But a nice racist thing to say of you anyway.

Btw.. If Babylon Sister(s) is a city, it might be Los Angeles AND San Francisco?

  • Me!!??

It was you that said babylon sisters might be about black women.

I found the idea prepoterous. Do you read me now?

But what you mentioned later in the reply I'm answering to now; that it could be about both Los Angeles and San Francisco is actually quite thought provoking.

  • You are funny^^

Anyway.. I think you are completely off. But that's the thing about Dan lyrics, we might all be wrong.

  • Yeah fer sure!

and you might of course also be wrong about it all.

Just come to think about an ancient computer gaming frase so often cited:

"All your base are belong to us"

  • Even detuned a bit for the sake of the ravages of time (and smoke) on the voice, it's every bit as thick and delicious as a dagwood sandwich. The keyboards are driving me mad. Scrumptious

  • Very cool. Very sexy. Brilliant lyrics and from 'Gaucho' possibly the best recorded album ever.

  • this is r&b at its finest

  • I agree with those who thought it could have been played a tad faster but I wouldn't change anything else. The Steelies' combination of song craft, musicianship and lyricism are out of this world! Such a great song, so smooth, so poignant.

  • Hey I posted the 'response' incase anyone found it helpful to see the chords played out.. thanks for posting this great video

  • "Don't go for that cotton candy." Love it.
