By ant chance, would anyone have a "Saturday Afternoon Movie" or "Sunday Afternoon Movie" open/close from 1977-78-79 or so that actually used the "spinning cameraman? I recall a Sunday Afternoon Movie broadcast about that time that featured "Gay Purr-ee," and used said animated cinematographer icon. Thanks.
I first came across said Movie stuff after one such Sat Afternoon flick(Saturday after Thanksgiving 88) ended with someone saying this line, "The good guys always win... even in teh 80s."
CFTO in Toronto(Channel 9) also used this opening for "The Big Show" weekdays at 4:00 back in the early 1980s. However, they used the "Star Wars" theme as the music for the program.
The announcer, WABC-TV's dependable Wally Parker, was live that Saturday afternoon. VERY rare opening for the local "SATURDAY AFTERNOON MOVIE", which continues to be scheduled when there's no sporting events scheduled on the network...
I.I.N.M., Parker did the evening-to-sign-off shift then. From what I've been apprised, the voice doing the PSA here sounds more like fellow announcing colleague (and ABC staff veteran) Bob Lloyd, whose credits included "Dark Shadows" and the early years of "One Life to Live."
TVnewsman has a different intro to "Spring Cinema". They took the same animation from the "Saturday Afternoon Movie" shown here as well as the cameraman from the "4:30 Movie" days. They used the original theme music from the "4:30 Movie". That why they called it "Spring Cinema".
This was right before 4:00 PM. ABC had no sports coverage that afternoon, and the movie shown was the pilot to the "Batman" series. Ironically, this film was shown nearly 20 years to the day of the series' premiere on ABC).
Also, in regards to the music, it sounds like it may have been composed by Edd Kalehoff (famous for "The Price is Right" and WNBC's NewsChannel 4, among other TV themes). It sounds pretty much like his style if you listen closely.
Let's not forget WOKR-TV (now WHAM-TV) in Syracuse, NY used to have that intro called "Movies". They used to have that video from RNYN, but they took it down about two years ago. The WOKR version had that choppy video, but it was a bumper and it was in poor condition. Let's hope if RNYN should bring back the WOKR's version with the same exact intro soon.
Thanks for bringing that up! The similar WOKR open was a big part of my childhood. They must have used that open for 15 years before they finally stopped using it!
I knew I saw that on WLS Ch. 7 in Chicago those movie bumpers were pretty universal between the networks sister stations i.e. WBBM Ch. 2 CBS and WMAQ Ch. 5 NBC
Days as a teen--I remember that opening from channel 7. Was also used for the Sunday Afternoon Movie. Of course even into the 1980's channel 7 was using their famed Saturday Night Movie title sequence--the one with the flying yellow circle 7's, used on the 4:30 Movie. Also, and in a bit of irony, WTNH-8 in New Haven, I think used this sequence. I say irony b/c WTNH was once a cap cities station.
Interestingly, this open was used on WPVI - it was the Million Dollar Movie open, with chyroned-on titles and obviously no circle 7. It was gone from there by 1985. CapCities was beginning to exert its influence on the ABC-owned stations at this time.
WBRC-TV 6 in Birmingham, Alabama, an ABC affiliate at the time, used the same open and music for its movies shown on the station in the early 1980s. WBRC-TV 6 is a FOX affiliate owned by FOX Television Stations.

Nearly three years later, the Saturday Afternoon Movie would use the "Moving Pictures" theme music with a different intro and outro.

Google just helped me out... it was "Megaforce." All this time, I thought it was Chuck Norris in the film. It was Barry Bostwick.

Let me add to my prior post... the voiceover guy on the CFTO version is the chief meteorologist for CFTO TV news.

Is the announcer live or pre-recorded?
andyee2 4 years ago
Live booth announcers were still in full effect back in '86.
RolloSmokes 4 years ago
Ah I see, sort of what we still have now in the UK we call them Continuity Announcers

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but is that announcer who did that PSA tag at the start, veteran Don Russell?

I do believe another station used this graphic. WTAE in Pittsburgh used the same open with "Hello News" music.
