So even though the Dreamcast was on a technical level miles ahead of the competition at release they had to convince people let down by the previous 5 years of Sega products that they could make a good console again. I find it slightly disgusting how much the CEO of Sega seems to shun the Dreamcast, sure it was a financial failure, but it garnered a fanatic following of many Sega titles that carry through to this day. Half of the Sonic games that are produced today wouldn't have sold as well as they did unless Sonic Adventure didn't get the following it did from the Dreamcast. Simon Jeffery's use of terms like "fanboy" and "fanatic" as negative things shows his ignorance as to how to run a company.

@dreamcastman1890 Shenmue is a Sega-product. So there's no chance that a different company will pick it up. A fan-made Shenmue is impossible. The game is way to expensive to make and produce. And if Sega licenses a different company, it has to be a Japanese company, since a western company will never be able to make a game like Shenmue, since it's so heavily based on Japanese culture.
Sega probably won't make it, since few people would buy it and the production/producing costs are very high.
@kenjuma Well, i agree with you on some points. It makes sense that a western developer wont be able to reproduce a japanese cultured game as well as a japanese studio. However, a game "like" Shenmue is very possible. Mass Effect is a good example in terms of conversation, dialogue, and decision making features. In a sense, they are both similar when it comes to collecting data and whatnot. But i believe youre right about them not making it because of production cost.

Well, I understand that in the US it actually did pretty well, but apart from the US and maybe Japan, people didn't buy it. The game developers therefore didn't support it. I think this will happen again. The casual gaming market was never Sega's thing. Trying to compete with Nintendo would be a mistake.

The good thing about the game on the dreamcast was the fac tthat you can train you character and his moves improve to expert level. you actually work as a forklifter in the game. The fighting is realisitic. You run to the point that you get tired. it has a weather system. remake this game please.
Yes I agree, Shenmue was a game changer for the genre, you can see it's influence even of the top games of today, such as Fallout, and Red Dead Redemption, most were for the good,some for the annoying... Do you really need to have the ability to open, and close many little tiny empty drawers? Dreamcast was so much better than the PS2 if you had one than you might have understood. The original playstation was groundbreaking , the ps2 however was just a rebooted ps with 128 bit graphics and a dvd ,big deal! Even though i picked the Dreamcast and it unfortunately died before it's time, i know i made the right decision.

I just don't get how they could leave one of the best games ever made just hanging like that. I understand sales and all, since the industry is currently dominated by OnLiNe PlAy. It would be legendary either way. If they're not releasing it soon, I hope it comes out later. I honestly still haven't played a game that has hit me just as hard as the original Shenmue.

This is what happens when you go from a company that use to have pride in what it did in the 80s and 90s to a corporation that only cares to reap the profits and get onto as many platforms in such a short amount of time. I thought the future was going to be better than expected after Dreamcast but I was wrong, now I'm left with this aura of a feeling with possibilities crossing my mind "what if" with a mixture of nostalgia.

@gomezgomas oh you STFU! The hardware was a head of Playstation 2!!!!!!!!! Dreamcast had internetadapter while PS2 didn't. Later they added. Even all games on Sega Dreamcast they were better looking than on PS2. The VMU was totally new and none of the consoles have that. Xbox live lives on money from buyers. Not sure if Sega gets the full money for it. Sega should release a new console! Nough SAID!
@capcom23 Look man, I love the Dreamcast, ironically the problem was that it was too ahead!, they din´t saw the PS2 coming, and the rest is history, a lot of dreamcast exclusives were ported to the PS2 and to the gamecube, of course they kept a lot of exclusives, till today! but It´s hardware became almost obsolete when the PS2 was released

@convictpanda The only sega game i bought has been Bayonetta. But i did that more to support Platinum games. But sega might start releasing their DC games on PSN and LIVE. They already started with the DC sonic game. So buy those games and show that there is a fanbase for DC games and eventually they will sell Shenmue 1&2. Those sales will then reflect how bad the fans want a Shenmue 3 game. Kitaku (i think thats what they are called) gave a negative review of the Sonic game. Bad news for us

Simon Jeffrey may come off as a douche, but he's just doing his job, I'd like to see Shenmue III, among other under-appreciated IPs from the Saturn and Dreamcast as much as the next guy, but if I were in his shoes, I too, would look towards the mass market, not a minority of degenerate corporate cheerleaders on the internet.
By the way, tonnes of the current install base for Sonic have never touched either Adventure game, and hell, THEY wouldn't have taken off, without the Genesis.

@dreamcastman1890 Shenmue is a Sega-product. So there's no chance that a different company will pick it up. A fan-made Shenmue is impossible. The game is way to expensive to make and produce. And if Sega licenses a different company, it has to be a Japanese company, since a western company will never be able to make a game like Shenmue, since it's so heavily based on Japanese culture.
Sega probably won't make it, since few people would buy it and the production/producing costs are very high.

@kenjuma Well, i agree with you on some points. It makes sense that a western developer wont be able to reproduce a japanese cultured game as well as a japanese studio. However, a game "like" Shenmue is very possible. Mass Effect is a good example in terms of conversation, dialogue, and decision making features. In a sense, they are both similar when it comes to collecting data and whatnot. But i believe youre right about them not making it because of production cost.

Well, I understand that in the US it actually did pretty well, but apart from the US and maybe Japan, people didn't buy it. The game developers therefore didn't support it. I think this will happen again. The casual gaming market was never Sega's thing. Trying to compete with Nintendo would be a mistake.

The good thing about the game on the dreamcast was the fac tthat you can train you character and his moves improve to expert level. you actually work as a forklifter in the game. The fighting is realisitic. You run to the point that you get tired. it has a weather system. remake this game please.

Yes I agree, Shenmue was a game changer for the genre, you can see it's influence even of the top games of today, such as Fallout, and Red Dead Redemption, most were for the good,some for the annoying... Do you really need to have the ability to open, and close many little tiny empty drawers? If they remake for todays powerful P S 3, and add a awesome S E G A arcade/Genesis classic games such as "Shinobi" "Streets of Rage" "Sonic" "Golden Ax" "Gunstar heroes" and updated fighting/graphics.. If only dreamcast came with DVD built in, then it would easily compete with PS2. Everybody knows it's the main reason DC failed, even Sega admitted it. They wanted to save on production costs by avoiding dvd player, but in the end like it always happens they lost all the money because of it.

Dreamcast was so much better than the PS2 if you had one than you might have understood. The original playstation was groundbreaking , the ps2 however was just a rebooted ps with 128 bit graphics and a dvd ,big deal! Even though i picked the Dreamcast and it unfortunately died before it's time, i know i made the right decision.

With that said i think Xbox should really consider a Shenmue III release with the Natal/Kinect add-on for the system. Just a thought!!!

I just don't get how they could leave one of the best games ever made just hanging like that. I understand sales and all, since the industry is currently dominated by OnLiNe PlAy. It would be legendary either way. If they're not releasing it soon, I hope it comes out later. I honestly still haven't played a game that has hit me just as hard as the original Shenmue.

This is what happens when you go from a company that use to have pride in what it did in the 80s and 90s to a corporation that only cares to reap the profits and get onto as many platforms in such a short amount of time. I thought the future was going to be better than expected after Dreamcast but I was wrong, now I'm left with this aura of a feeling with possibilities crossing my mind "what if" with a mixture of nostalgia.
I'm a little heart broken but I've moved on to PC w. Steam.

My Dickhead friend made me play Shenmue 1 & 2 on his DC...he told me he had 3 in his room somewhere..I finished 1 & 2 and then he told me. He lied......There is no Shenmue 3...He just wanted me to feel like he did...FUCKED IN THE ARSE. Now I'm fucked in the arse by SEGA

@gomezgomas And no, R.E code veronica was better on PS2, the same with capcom vs snk 2, SF3 third strike, Garou mark of the wolves, Gunbird, Gigawing, Gulty gear x, I mean, maybe the differences are minimal, but still, the PS2 ports of those games were better. Maybe the only game that looked better on the dreamcast was DOA2.

@gomezgomas oh you STFU! The hardware was a head of Playstation 2!!!!!!!!! Dreamcast had internetadapter while PS2 didn't. Later they added. Even all games on Sega Dreamcast they were better looking than on PS2. The VMU was totally new and none of the consoles have that. Xbox live lives on money from buyers. Not sure if Sega gets the full money for it. Sega should release a new console! Nough SAID!

@capcom23 Look man, I love the Dreamcast, ironically the problem was that it was too ahead!, they din´t saw the PS2 coming, and the rest is history, a lot of dreamcast exclusives were ported to the PS2 and to the gamecube, of course they kept a lot of exclusives, till today! but It´s hardware became almost obsolete when the PS2 was released

@convictpanda The only sega game i bought has been Bayonetta. But i did that more to support Platinum games. But sega might start releasing their DC games on PSN and LIVE. They already started with the DC sonic game. So buy those games and show that there is a fanbase for DC games and eventually they will sell Shenmue 1&2. Those sales will then reflect how bad the fans want a Shenmue 3 game. Kitaku (i think thats what they are called) gave a negative review of the Sonic game. Bad news for us
