i surf there often. the water is cold. the swell infront at pacific beach is shit (most of the time) and its alway onshore wind. wetsuits help you from being cold. water temperature in SD never gets below 52 but can get as warm as 78 (9/1/09) its whatever you feel comfortable with, and yes, it can rip bathing suits off. when you waiting for your turn it can get nippy, so i choose to wear a wetsuit.

I am sure if the waves are going off in the ocean not many real surfers at the flow rider, but if its flat and blown-out what better way to spend an afterrnoon. San Diego gets below freezing (32f) in january every once in awhile, averages 48f low. wetsuit is the only way to go and it also helps protect you when you go down hard. I think winters have been cold in diego for awhile, but I only have records going back to the famous crop freeze in 1787. man that sucked, me wettie wasnt seam sealed.

Because it was cold. The contest was during winter. The water sits in a giant swimming pool underneath the wave surface so it's basically solar heated. Cold weather = cold water = wetsuits.
