I think this term is used to describe Punjabi Hindus who used to live in NWFP or Afghanistan and speak Pushto like Pashtuns/Pathans do. I think that most, if not all, Pashtuns are sunni muslims and that 'Hindu Pathans' refer to people from a different ethnic group (Punjabi) who lived in the same area as Pashtuns. I may be wrong and this is the reason why I'm asking you this question.

Dilip Kumar, for instance, was one ; but Pran, the veteran & giant actor, was a Punjabi ... but some Pukhtoons do not reclame him as theirs ... why ? Perhaps he is not a matinee idol (even if he was really esthetical in his debut movie) ?

So, naturally, they had to speak Pukhto/Hindko with the local Pukhtoons/Punjabis ... and they described themselves as Pukhtoons just for their cultural proximity with their neighbours, perhaps ... like the Tanolis, who are Rajputs describing themselves as Pukhtoons, even if the Pukhtoons are not of this view.
