A boy who only listens to heavy heavy rock songs was telling me how The Beatles were boring, that I should just listen to sreamo and forget them. I said ''You idiot, without them there wouldn't be screamo, there wouldn't be your dear heavy metal! Have you ever heard of "Healter Skelter"?". He doesn't bug me anymore.
Although Paul's piercing lead vocal rocks in this song, what I love best about this song (and most of The Beatles entire catalogue) is John's alto harmonies...absolutely beautiful!
I lived through it all and it was fabulous. It's hard to listen and not tear up over all the phone calls that weren't answered; all the times walking past her window to see if she was home; all the wonderful anxiety of being in love and the agony of being rejected. The Beatles made us feel we weren't alone, that someone else understood. They were great no matter what anyone says to the contrary.
@frilb Sounds like me man...Been there and as the cliche says done that...I couldn't have said it better...Lots of loves and lots of heartaches...But they always told us that they were there with us, understood what we were going through and had the same problems...I love the Beatles and love those days...
This is how great they were. Trying to think of two of there songs that sounded alike. I can't do it. Incredible songwriters etc etc. etc. They were and alway will be the best band that ever recorded this amazing music.
The Beatles themselves were like other men, but the music and lyrics channeled through them contained magic and messages from beyond the mind. To learn how to perceive these hidden meanings, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read through the section about The Beatles.
Growing up in Canada, the only version of this song we heard was Anne Murray (Who did an awesome cover BTW). I didn't know it was a Beatles song until years later.
the most impressive things about this great song are the vocal harmonies and the brilliant drumlines. the bass injections are incredibly clever too, as are the subtle notes of very hard-edged, almost 'garage' guitar sounds. the subtext to 'you won't see me' is brain epstein's frustrated, unrequired love affair with john. all told, this is a deep and strange song - with a glorious, uplifting, lilting tune - and very serious, indeed tragic, undertones. the whole album is ace, possibly their best.
@uclrichard I agree. Rubber Soul is the best of the Beatles before they went soaring around the bend. Especially "Girl", "Wait" and "In My Life". Incredible stuff.
To hear the hidden messages in the Beatles’ music, you do not have to play the songs backwards like some people in the sixties thought; you just have to change your perspective, listen backwards. Go to TruthContest(dot)com, and on the main page of the contest, open The Present and read the section about The Beatles. If you like The Beatles, definitely check this out.
I'm not being funny but anyone who says they hate/dislike the beatles is a complete bullshitter. if u think ur one of these people ask yourself, do you like nirvana? led zeppelin? black sabbath? pink floyd? the clash? jimi hendrix? bob marley? oasis? the list could go on forever but the point is if you think u don't like the beatles take all the albums of these artists and snap them in half because they wouldn't even exist! without the beatles being their biggest influence.
@Hendrix667 Jimi, Zep, Marley, Pink Floyd, Sabbath wouldn't have existed? You don't know music that well. That's not a knock on the Fab 4. But you give them too much credit.
Also, you clearly don't know what shaped those guys I picked from your list. I'll give you Nirvana & Oasis. But the rest would've been just fine without the Beatles.
@upabittoolate read the comment properly mate, 'wouldn't exist without the beatles being their biggest influence'. all of the bands and artists i stated either have admitted they gained alot of their inspiration from the beatles or it shows in the writing of their music. F.Y.I Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi, were two of the biggest beatles fans in the music industry.
@Hendrix667 What you don't understand is how those bands (that I picked form your list) came to being. If you simply investigate how Pink Floyd made their band's name you'll understand my allusion. You'll understand that Britain got its 1st exposure to the blues from Black GI Joes who came through during world wars. THAT was the major influence. The Beatles didn't just create a sound from nothing.
As for your Ozzy remark, it's rubbish. I'm a fan of Larry Bird but I can't hit a jumpshot shit.
@upabittoolate Dude YOU obviously haven't done your research right. Hendrix667 is right. Ozzy Osbourne wears those circular glasses cuz Lennon did. "Helter Skelter" is arguably the first metal song of all time. Beatles stuff like "Tomorrow Never Knows" is the kind of Stuff Pink Floyd was influenced by. And Hendrix tones would sound like Elvis's guitar if there where no BEATLES. Beatles sold more albums then Black Sabbath, Zep, & Ac/Dc combined. Ya he definitely gave them to much credit lol
@BloodShotNow I obviously HAVE done my research because I laid out how it was that the Brits learned about the blues. You think some fucking GLASSES is evidence? Jimi Hendrix, a man whose roots derive in the South (VA if I'm not mistaken), would sound like ELVIS?
@upabittoolate your an obnoxious, stubborn, moron who needs to know when he's been had the f**k off so stop trying to prove people wrong with your jag, wikipedia information. @Hendrix667 I'm not your lad Mate. Like I said, British musicians got their introduction to the blues from Black American GIs. That INCLUDES the Beatles. Read the history of Mojo Magazine. Nevertheless, your arguments are less accurate than they are strong. It's actually pathetic that I have to school you on British rock music.
@upabittoolate look, ur fighting i loosing battle. yes you state the obvious there that the beatles were in fact influenced by black americans, hence the fact they have covered many chuck berry, the everlys etc however my argument was not who influenced the beatles, it was who the beatles have influenced and how they changed music from the black culture you desribed. You have no argument. pre 65 beatles were pretty much another band. it was the late beatles that influenced music today. e.g floyd
@Hendrix667 I had no clue BOB MARLEY & THE CLASH where influenced By the Beatles. I've done enough research to know the rest 100% would not exist. :-)
@BloodShotNow yeah man :) listen to london calling, arguably the clashes best album, am i right? then listen to revolver's mastermind genius of George Martin working with George Harrison's solo's turning them backwards is a huge part of the clashes sound. And it takes one look at Bob Marley's Lyrical inspiration is taken from John's 'Peace, Love, Drugs' attitude :)
@Hendrix667 - Difference is, all of the artists that you mentioned also excelled in concert. By 1965, The Beatles really excelled in studio, not on stage. Rubber Soul was released in December '65, some 4 months after their meeting with EP, and is the last of their commercial "love" albums. Rubber Soul is truly a pop music masterpiece.
@elvisworldwide Yes that's true, not saying the beatles couldn't play live as well as the bands i mentioned as, fair enough they weren't the best showmen ever, but they still proved themselves countless times that their live music was amazing (the rooftop concert being one of my favorite gigs ever). John just decided it was about the music rather than the fame, one of the many issues in which paul and john disagreed on. rubber soul is an absolute classic.
@Hendrix667 Agreed. Hypothetically, had The Beatles not disbanded, the 1970's would undoubtedly seen The Beatles on the road again, in concert, stunning the world with new, amazing music. That said, there would have been no Wings. I guess we're stuck with only a decade of genius compositions.
@Hendrix667 Somebody is my class at college is the same. I'll ask him why and he either says "I don't know" or just gives me loads of half sentences and incomprehendiable mumbles. And when I explain what the Beatles did for music history he just says "well somebody else would have done it." Oh right that's good enough. I guess he will say the same thing when somebody finds a cure for cancer or creates a teleportation device. Dick!
@Hendrix667 Excellent point. I was a teenager when the Beatles hit the scene; they completely changed pop music forever. It was a musical revolution unparalleled in history. My whole generation held its breath in anticipation of each successive album because we knew that each new Beatles LP would further transform music, open unknown doors and windows and explore unknown musical worlds.
It was incredibly exciting for anyone who likes music; even our parents were won over, albeit reluctantly.
@Hendrix667 The Beatles are so amazing it's ridiculous. Thank you Dad and Uncle for bringing me up on this. This is so much a part of my life you just don't even know :-D
@Hendrix667 Are you seriously suggesting the the Beatles were more of a musical influence on the Wailers than Curtis Mayfield, Smokey Robinson, Holland/Dozier/Holland, Reverend Alex Bradford, Count Lasher or the Moonglows? One solitary cover of "And I Love Her", already popularised by the Mighty Vikings, hardly suggests a huge influence - the Wailers covered as many Bob Dylan and Jimmy Clanton songs as they covered Beatles ones, so I find your argument lacking in evidence
@klebacher That's only true within a very limited framework of music - basically the Anglophone Caucasian community. There are countless musicians, some very successful, whose music was not influenced by the Beatles - can you hear a Beatles influence in say Asha Bhosle, Mongo Santamaria, Seventies Nigerian funk, Seyed Khalil Alinejad, Ba Que, Dulce Pontes, the Neville Brothers, Ralph Thamar or Simentera? It is possible to own thousands of recordings not influenced by the Scouse karaoke whiners
well said.... when people say they dont like the beatles, i often respond with "okay, thats the end of this musical conversation" after they say that, i cant hear/ respect anything else they say, as far as music goes
@BulaSol Well, that will certainly put any foolish person who enjoys classical, Scottish or other European folk, gospel, thirties blues, jazz, African, Latin American, Jewish, Portuguese, Caribbean, Indian, Cambodian or Iranian music in their place then; what a wide musical taste you must have to be able to reject the music of 90% of the world over the past hundred years
Suddenly I didn´t want to go to bed. I felt like listen to this song. Then I turn on my computer and serch it in you tube. Oh boy! now I´m gonna sleep well :-) Thanks a lot for posting. Beatles for life! cheers from Mexico.
for the people that disliked this are just posers that cant get a grip on this facist so called " reality and this "reality" isnt much to get hooked on and if you do you care too much about life instead of going with it and not against it when you go against something you get burned and sometimes burns never heal and the burning in life is do to friction of events when going against it and just going with the flow and not trying to be like everyone else is called unique and thats rare in today
Lots of interesting and cleaver harmonization going on while a cleaver melody is unfolding itself. Some young lady inspired this by being reticent. Good job girl.
I love you paul mccartney i may sound like a stupid 9 year old who has a crush, i love them and yes he is cute (really really hot) but this is the music i have ever heard in my life
My fav song too...the 'oooh-la-la-la' is showcased in Billy Joel's "All You Want to Do is Dance" (why don't the Beatles get back together-la-la-la)....:)))
The Beatles,as a group, were *far* better than the sum of their parts.None of them did anything worth listening to after the breakup but in the group they all, except maybe for Ringo, showed amazing talent as performers/writers/arrangers.
@listerone right i agree with the first statement but you can't say NONE of them did ANYTHING worth listening to, that's just ridiculous.. plastic ono band was one of the best albums of the 70s..
there is no best Beatle, you can have a favorite Beatle but there is no best. All four made the band. If you take out any of them its not the same and the music we all love would not have been created
los Beatles son los mejores artistas que el siglo 20 produjo no solo cambiaron la musica sino toda la cultura......todavia hoy venden mas que muchos "grupos " de rock que salen por millones como las hormigas...
@nikelski if paul was the best why was he not where john was before his death? John was the beatles he out sold solo way more than that wings bullshit.
@branruler In terms of records sold its no contest - Paul is by far the best selling Beatle. He had 23 top 40 singles which more than John, George and Ringo combined. McCartney has sold over 100 million albums, a figure that John Lennon is nowhere near. Remember for every Imagine or Double Fantasy, Lennon also had a number of commercial misses, while Wings was constantly in the top 40. Not talking about quality of work, just who is more successful commercially.
@nikelski632 Yes and no. By far Paul's best work was with the Beatles, but that was the case with all four (except John Lennon's Imagine). But Paul had some really good songs right at the start of his Wings phase. Listen to My Love - Paul does a great job; Maybe Im Amazed is terrific; so is Band on the Run (listen to the title track) - or the energy he brings to Jet, and listen to him channel Lennon in Let me Roll in It. Unfortunately most of his work from 1974 on is disappointing.
@jimraw1 aren't you forgetting "juniors farm", "listen to what the man said", "let 'em in", "silly love songs", and "with a little luck"? they were all from '74 to '78. he also had some decent hits in the early '80s such as "comin' up", "take it away", "ebony and ivory", "say, say, say", "the girl is mine", and that christmas song. i think even i am forgetting a couple.
@cb46nep10 This is where I have a difference of opinion with you. I love PM and his early Wings, but I'm not a huge fan of some of their later work. I know The Girl is Mine, Ebony and Ivory, Junior's Farm, Mull of Kintyre, With a Little Luck and several others were hits, but I'm not sure I consider them to be Paul's best work. (Even though Mull of Kintyre is the biggest non-charity song in British history, is it really that great a tune?) Anything after Red Rose Speedway isn't my cup of tea.
@jimraw1 how could you or i forget "getting closer" and "i've had enough"? those 2 songs are very under-rated. i will agree with you about his work from 1984 on. however from 1974-1983 he did some very fine work.
@cb46nep10 I have to agree both of those songs are pretty good; I guess 1979 was kind of a renaissance for him. Rockestra Theme is also pretty good (too bad John couldn't have joined him for it).
@cicciodiablo You are one of the best people on earth.. To heck with i cant spend all night on youtube doing this EVREY ONE WHO LIKES THE BEATLES IS THE BEST PERSON EVER (well he was the best )
rubber soul the second album i bought (after the dave clark five)...listened to it countless times with the speakers on either side of my head...stereo was amazing
This is the BBCs Sounds of the 60s Beatles A to Z song for week start19JUN10 where the history of this song is given about 36 mins into the prog It can be heard online for 7days after Jun19 by going to the prog Paul was influenced in writing this partly by a song by the Four Tops & probs he was having with his then girlfriend Jane Asher A VERY under-rated song from the brilliant Rubber Soul The harmonies on this are magically perfect ENJOY
The Beatles are timeless. My parents and my children love them (and so do I, of course). They evolved so extremely, diversely and fabulously in their ten or so years together.
...Well i guess on the bright side, Paul and Jane Asher's arguments led to great songsXD

well said.... when people say they dont like the beatles, i often respond with "okay, thats the end of this musical conversation" after they say that, i cant hear/ respect anything else they say, as far as music goes
BulaSol 1 week ago
@BulaSol Well, that will certainly put any foolish person who enjoys classical, Scottish or other European folk, gospel, thirties blues, jazz, African, Latin American, Jewish, Portuguese, Caribbean, Indian, Cambodian or Iranian music in their place then; what a wide musical taste you must have to be able to reject the music of 90% of the world over the past hundred years

Great song! I don't care how old the Beatles songs get. I think they are timeless. I love the Beatles.
Turdbuckethat 1 year ago 3
for the people that disliked this are just posers that cant get a grip on this facist so called " reality and this "reality" isnt much to get hooked on and if you do you care too much about life instead of going with it and not against it when you go against something you get burned and sometimes burns never heal and the burning in life is do to friction of events when going against it and just going with the flow and not trying to be like everyone else is called unique and thats rare in today

The Beatles,as a group, were *far* better than the sum of their parts.None of them did anything worth listening to after the breakup but in the group they all, except maybe for Ringo, showed amazing talent as performers/writers/arrangers.
listerone 1 year ago
@listerone right i agree with the first statement but you can't say NONE of them did ANYTHING worth listening to, that's just ridiculous.. plastic ono band was one of the best albums of the 70s..
luvujessiex 1 year ago
there is no best Beatle, you can have a favorite Beatle but there is no best.

John was the beatles he out sold solo way more than that wings bullshit.
branruler 1 year ago
@branruler In terms of records sold its no contest - Paul is by far the best selling Beatle. He had 23 top 40 singles which more than John, George and Ringo combined. McCartney has sold over 100 million albums, a figure that John Lennon is nowhere near. Remember for every Imagine or Double Fantasy, Lennon also had a number of commercial misses, while Wings was constantly in the top 40. Not talking about quality of work, just who is more successful commercially.

cicciodiablo 1 year ago 2
@cicciodiablo
Yes, but as solo singer Paul wasn't so good as in the Beatles. He really need rest of the BEATLES!
nikelski632 1 year ago
@nikelski632 Yes and no. By far Paul's best work was with the Beatles, but that was the case with all four (except John Lennon's Imagine). But Paul had some really good songs right at the start of his Wings phase. Listen to My Love - Paul does a great job; Maybe Im Amazed is terrific; so is Band on the Run (listen to the title track) - or the energy he brings to Jet, and listen to him channel Lennon in Let me Roll in It. Unfortunately most of his work from 1974 on is disappointing.
jimraw1 1 year ago
@jimraw1 aren't you forgetting "juniors farm", "listen to what the man said", "let 'em in", "silly love songs", and "with a little luck"? they were all from '74 to '78. he also had some decent hits in the early '80s such as "comin' up", "take it away", "ebony and ivory", "say, say, say", "the girl is mine", and that christmas song. i think even i am forgetting a couple.
cb46nep10 1 year ago
@cb46nep10 This is where I have a difference of opinion with you. I love PM and his early Wings, but I'm not a huge fan of some of their later work. I know The Girl is Mine, Ebony and Ivory, Junior's Farm, Mull of Kintyre, With a Little Luck and several others were hits, but I'm not sure I consider them to be Paul's best work. (Even though Mull of Kintyre is the biggest non-charity song in British history, is it really that great a tune?) Anything after Red Rose Speedway isn't my cup of tea.
jimraw1 1 year ago
@jimraw1 how could you or i forget "getting closer" and "i've had enough"? those 2 songs are very under-rated. i will agree with you about his work from 1984 on. however from 1974-1983 he did some very fine work.
cb46nep10 1 year ago
@cb46nep10 I have to agree both of those songs are pretty good; I guess 1979 was kind of a renaissance for him. Rockestra Theme is also pretty good (too bad John couldn't have joined him for it).
