  • ..There was a wonderful scene in an Indian movie...where a man is trying to escape lots of soldiers chasing him and once he's cornered and has no where to go he unleashes "the Urumi" upon them and with devastating effect...I think the movie was called "Utsav"...pretty sexy movie about how Kamasutra was written by Vatsyayan but that's the scene I recall from that movie...!!!!

  • ..It's said in the hands of a master 'Urumi" can help fight against 32 men at one time...!!!!

  • @seanmcbride1

32 men and nobody could find some fist sized rocks? Nothing beats a good stoning. :)

  • @wackywankavator Haha maybe they become so good at it ...that they can deflect stones or any in coming missile for that matter..I've also heard of a story where a Nepalese man cut off the heads of 100 men in a battle with his khukri(he was surrounded by 100 men)...it's a small blade used by the Gurkhas...according to Indian class of warriors..there's a class called Maharathi .(class according to skill)capable of taking on 10,000 men at one time, there are two more higher classes.

  • @seanmcbride1 It's safe to say that there are no Maharathis left on this planet...I'm sorry I got it wrong there Maharathi can fight 60,000 warriors at one time, Atirathi are the ones that fight 10,000 men...then there is Atimaharathi who is capable of fighting 12 Maharathi's at the same time....then the last one and the greatest Mahamaharathi someone who's capable of fighting 24 Atimaharathi at the same time...nobody has achieved this class of warrior....!!!!

  • hey this was the exact place on fight quest

  • I'd be so scared trying to learn to fight with one of those things.

  • Not every student of 'Kalaripayattu' is given the 'urumi'. It's knowledge is taught only after the pupil has reached the 'spiritual' maturity over mastering it. Which comes after years of practice .( I consider myself decently mature .. but I think I am aeons away from even having the guts to swing it once )

I have been fortunate enough to witness a cola bottle's upper region being sliced off horizontally by this thing ... the demonstration done, u r left with a sense of amazement !!!!.

  • bet the guy is thankful he had a shield.

  • hmmm, ive heard of these things, but i always thought they functioned more like whips, and these look more like swords. well, chalk it up to RPG's to describe a weapon wrong. Does anyone know how you actually fight with these things?

  • @omnigeek13 you swing it and hopes it hits them and not you XD

  • @omnigeek13

These weapons are called 'Urumi' or the curled sword or the spring sword. The length is generally 5 to 6 feet. They are excellent as slashing weapons but useless for piercing. Thus they have no point, the top is rounded but both the edges are sharpened. Warriors used to wear them like a belt, over a toughened leather or folded cloth regular belt (otherwise they would cut into the skin). These swords are weapons best suited for personal security.

  • @omnigeek13

When you are surrounded by 3-4 or more assailants you can create a deadly circle of sharp whirling steel around you. But they are useless in battle formation as you don't have the room to wield the weapon. In Kalaripayattu, Urumi is taught last, after you have mastered all other weapons. In a skilled hand Urumi can easily behead an enemy, in an unskilled hand it is as easy to behead yourself. In North India this same sword is called 'aara'. Hope this helps.

  • Fantastic, I wonder the hability it takes even to wield these swords properly, let alone attacking in quick sucession. It's also a very intimidating weapon.

  • seeing someone wield a weapon like this should scare you. Why? Because if they are skilled enough to use it without killing themselves, they are skilled enough to fuck you up with it.

  • i can use alot of wepons but things i cant use are numchucks dual swords and im soso wit sias but i like those wepons they used but id cut my self o and i cant use whips and chains so good either

  • @blackwinter35 really? I personally have no problem when I have both hands occupied (like w/ my wonderful sai) but the moment I have an empty hand I'm screwed unless I drop the other weapon and fall back into hand-to-hand. I can duel wield no problem but using a single one-handed weapon and I get pwned every time. Or whips....

  • I could just imagine having to use that in a self defense scenario...guy pulls out a switch blade and watches his victim chop himself into tiny pieces.

  • Seen a performance of this in Kerala....this weapon looks deadly, but I can imagine the practice that goes into avoiding actually whipping yourself

  • This is a new one for me. I've been studying various martial arts for a long time (I got my first book on "ju-jitsu" way back about 1960) and I have not seen weapons like this.

I know the Indians have an impressive martial tradition that's largely unknown in the West.

  • You know, I had a feeling Deadliest Warrior was gonna get brought up. The Urumi is not a Rajput weapon at all and DW is hardly the definitive source or anything. As for the video, it;s awesome, I love learning about various martial arts.

  • my hats off for doing that with no protection. Im sure its one of those weapons that take a great deal on concentration and skill to use properly.

  • And I thought Nunchuks were badass

  • its a piece of shit because it tested it against other swords, NO SHIT.

have you ever used one? thats what i thought.

the urumi were and are usually used for show and play in indian traditions. you being an indian should know that.

  • @romansoldierofhonor wat the heck im from kerala and he he urumi for show it is considered as the deadlyst sword .U know one thing kalarippayattu was used train soldiers And it is not a joke a real guru doesnt even need a sword to figt

  • @romansoldierofhonor U can get your chance, watch Deadliest Warrior On tuesday, It is Roman SOldier vs Indian Rajput the coiled sword is one of their wepons

  • besides,i know from experience and minor testing, that once things get thin enough, they dont need to be sharpened to seriously cut dep into flesh, best example, a spring steel, demonstration chinese broadsword no WHITE as whippy as those in wushu shows but still flexible, that thing can cut a decently sized watermelon in two, nearly at the middle (widest point) wthout sharpening it,

also, tif you flung around a high grade bundle of piano wires, youd do some SERIOUSdamage.

  • @romansoldierofhonor your ignorance is very annoying

  • @romansoldierofhonor, check up on karate, will you? Your vaunted samurai, clad in armour, were taken out by Okinawan peasants who wielded agricultural implements or their bare hands and feet.. The Okinawans were not allowed by the Japanese overlords to bear swords, so they showed them that it was not the weapon, but the bearer of the weapon that counted. And, if you look at it in the proper light, these "warriors" were no better than robbers - there was nothing honourable about them.

  • this sword sparring was a tradition only for show, not worthy of battle against long swords, even short shorts. it sure as hell cant penetrate armor.

nothing against indians i like indian, but they have way better swords than this pile of coiled shit that looks like a bunch of tape measures with a handle on it.

  • When done seriously, urumi fighting can be extremely dangerous. It may be a 'flimsy little strip of metal' to people, but when it gains speed and force, it can seriously cut some things up.

I have watched these sparring fights in real life. If handled in the right way, sometimes even the wrong way, you could walk away disabled for the rest of your life.

I just hate seeing all these comments "Claymores are bigger" and "this is so flimsy".

Each weapon has a potential to be deadly in its own way.

  • I love how people comment on weaponry and martial arts styles and they've never practiced a day in their life. Just sayin. XD

  • cool swords and all that, but one slice from a razor sharp claymore would break that thin ass metal urumi in half, leaving the indian un-armed and the scotsman victorious.

  • yeah right, like the rockets , fired from indian ships, when the british first attacked india.. a few hundred years

Like the british, the scots would then start begging , and form the east-scottish company..

  • except the scotsman would be dead before he could even draw it, lol

  • and.. one thing, how can you BREAK something that flexes when force is applied to it.

that said.. if nothing else, if a scotsman is wearing chainmail, hes pretty safe but, all te indian would have to do was flick and slice at his wrists and neck and legs, cant fight with severed tendons, and wont last long with a sliced pair of major arteries

  • ive seen and tested these thin ass swords okay. you swing the sharp ede against the sharp egdge of a thicker long sword and its like cutting paper..the urumi is useless on the battle field.

but for stealthy kills or a man wearing no armor they can be okay for that.

  • this is true

but, i remember now that the urumi is a sword PURELY for dueling, i.e dues to settle legal dissagreements in old times and thrusts and stabs arnt allowd in indian duels as they were.

  • well, the urumi was actually designed to fight against a large number of people, not warriors actually but thugs and looters back in the olden days...cuz most of them depended on knifes and swords.

but it is easy to kill a person with an urumi in a stealth attack ...all you have to do is aim towards the neck and strike.

  • @romansoldierofhonor True it is not particularly useful for parring, but the range is superior than many swords, and there advantages as well to flexibility

  • Um... You do know that Claymores are not typically so sharp, and are meant for hacking instead of slicing/cutting... right? >.>

If you have a 'sharp' claymore, then it's not a real claymore.

  • this sword is like swingin around a buch of tape measures.. its a piece of shit.

  • I think it wouldn't fare against a suit of armor, but in the battles it's meant to be used, it's dangerous.

Have you seen an urumi in real life? It would be like trying to touch a moving Jigsaw tool.

And whips are nothing but a strong type of fabric tightly woven, yet they can seriously scar and hurt people if used incorrectly. Ever think of that?

  • I would die of laughter before the sword would get me!

  • @webbum

At least you would die laughing. That's more than I can say for the millions who died at the edge of that blade.

  • @abudabu200 How many died? I want to know for the Deadliest Warrior Matchup Tuesday Roman Centurion vs Indian Rajput

  • @ACDCJCUSMC

Well, the Urumi was used throughout South and Central India. It was mostly used against roaming thugs and bands of thieves. The worshippers of Godess Kali terrorized Indian countryside, and this was very effective against them. I am surprised at this being a weapon in a battle scenario however. Moreoever, Rajputs always defended their forts and land, very rarely attacked to conquer or expand. It's a weapon women can use, the there are Urumi swords with multiple belts on a single

  • Imagine wearing that as a belt, someone attacks you and just whip that out and slice him across the face!

  • Imagine you whip it out and is slices your belly open because you're wearing it as a belt.

    50/50?

  • It wont.

That's how they use it, it will rip your belly only if you are fat.

  • LOL

This weapon looks realy dangerous but have you seen a pork sword, man thats deadly, it kills more people a year than that sword will ever do.

    AIDS (THE REAL KILLING TOOL)

  • The Saturdays - Wordshaker

  • those swords look like they suck

  • that probably coz a real sword weights 2-3 KG and is not used during this fertility dance that these board-hoppers are doing!!! hahaha

  • hey dude if you dont know about something please dont make any comments.try to hold that sword(urumi)and twist it like those skilled men, you will cut yourselves into 2.you need some real skills to use it dude.

  • are these guys gay for each other?

  • imagince if he misses! o-o but anyway when the sword coiled out that was cool

  • damn that's bad ass

  • Gay and violent xD

  • outdated martial art....

  • Lamest martial art ever, it sounds like they are swinging aluminum siding around and it looks like Christmas tree tinsel. Wtf is with Youtube's recent fascination with featuring random indian crap.

  • maybe you wonder, kung fu originated from this martial arts.

  • ?????????

  • gay

  • crazy dude...

  • i taught one of them flower arranging to calm him down. a nice glass of cold goats milk and a paracetimal does the trick.. very soothing

  • At the very start, the both looked like faggots.

  • wtf is this shit

  • ryt XD

  • Jeepers, you'd not stand much of a chance against one of those

  • Actually I disagree. I am surprised they opted for shields which lacked some sort of entangler. The blades are fast, and can break the sound barrier like a whip, but hell, throw a net or even a blanket, even if you miss it will tangle the blade up. The weapon is all attack and zero defense.

  • formless:

Yea I know, the swords they are using would basically be useless against any sort of armor that was metal based. You can see the their swords are fairly malleable (the can be coiled) so they probably would just warp and bend when hitting a hard surface. In other words, unless you are fighting another naked guy, you are gonna die. A platemail wearing knight with a butter-knife would probably beat them.

  • Quite correct Chantzehao, even if we propose a situation of hot weather and expensive metal, the weapon has terrible limitations. All the same, if you aren't armored and you get hit, it would be messy as you say.

  • It kinda reminds me of when i use to swing my metal slinky around...Good times

  • Lol, yeah, I did that too as a kid :D

  • ROFL

  • ill learn this... :-)

  • whip-sword kind of thing, called urumi - deadly weapon - was mostly used when fighting against multiple enemies.

  • great stuff!
