koi carp were bred in japan and are said to harbor the sacred spirits yin and yan. the reason they grow so big is in one of the bred species of carp the growth hormone is in the male in the other species the hormone is in the female causing a very large fish that decimates almost any enviroment they are introduced to included the waikato river in new zealand.

I'm training my small koi fish to do this right now -.- takes time but they are nibbling my finger :D :D :D :D they about 4-6 inches long alread (and a 1ft 10inch one -estimating-... one of my old fish *...like 20 of them didnt survive during the winter....... there goes alot of money.... those were big fish... lol)*) I love koi fish because the live REALLY long (koi and cod are same thing... koi is just colored)

@gfj64 i have one koi and one goldfish and they are best friends. They never move more than a couple feet away from each other and if they do they freak out and wont stop looking until one finds the other! :D So you can get a koi and have them be friends with your goldfish as long as you have the space requirements.

A lot of people don't know how Koi fish were created. If they found a Carp with ANY kind of coloring they liked (One with red or white or gold or black, etc.) markings on it, they would take it and breed it with others of another coloration they liked. They would keep doing this until they got the desired coloring. Those fish are so cool! :P

i used to have some koi, they used to love dummy's dipped in honey, and even wild carp like to suck your finger, i do fishing and thats how to calm down a carp out of water, the just have a hard inner mouth and they chew your finger gently and become really calm for pictures

@meatsmith They are eight years old, Japanese bred jumbo Koi can get that size in only 4 or 5 years. We have had the jumbo Koi for a few years. They were that size when we imported them.

A 55 gallon tank can hold six, very small, koi fish. But they will soon outgrow their tank. Koi are a pond fish, usually the only time they are in a tank is during the wintertime. The smallest tank that can hold a few Koi is going to be about 150 gallons.

A 55 gallon tank should hold five goldfish just fine. Make sure you have a filter and enough aeration for the fish. You can then transfer them to the pond.
