Mike Modano retired today - the last active player from the 80's.
So, the 80's in the NHL have ended. The great era of Gretzky,Lemieux, and the likes of Gordie Howe,Bobby Hull, and Phil Esposito played their last. Goodbye 80's! GOODBYE!
ADD moment - am I the only one who noticed that suddenly after Bettman took over, teams started relocating or having massive financial trouble? Canadian markets basically went into the crapper in the 90s. Rather than star players staying in Canada, they suddenly moved to the US. Obviously, the fans are back in full force in Canada, and now we're the gravy train for the rest of the league when teams can't make it on their own...you know, the teams that can sign big name players.
God I love hockey. And that jittery kid who said "You know" every other word with a shaky voice would eventually go on to become the most prolific scorer born in the United States. Congrats on a hall of fame career Mike!!
Seriously, as an overall player, Trevor Linden kicks Modano's ass. The difference is, he didn't have the same supporting cast and as a result, didn't have the cup rings. The Minnesota/Dallas organization groomed Modano and knew what to do with him. In Vancouver, Linden was screwed. But Trevor had a lot more heart and almost won Game 7 in '94 on his own. Mike had Brett Hull.
@surfer53 Sorry, more heart? You either don't know Mo, or have never really seen interviews or anything of the sort because if you did, your comment wouldn't exist. Modano is far more classy off and on the ice. -Sigh- why do retards have to try to spoil amazing memories of the greatest players by being disrespectful and going on about someone else. Keep negativity to yourself and respect those that have had a great career and loved the game.
@seiver1088 Ahh...at least 1 out 3 of those responses had to come from a Texan hockey fan, you know, fans who have pretty much bastardized the game. What's the latest thing? Hockey cheerleaders? The irony here is that I was on Canucks.com defending Modano when people say they're rather have Manny Malhotra. It's his experience and leadership you want.
Well, why wouldn't Dallas retire Mike Modano's #9. Of course we all know that he's been with this organization since 89 and the move to Texas in 93. Modano IS the Dallas Stars as Mario Lemieux was to the Pittsburgh Penguins. God bless you, Mike. You are forever a Star.
@ikilludead123 Yeah well I mean for the Stars Mike Modano should be at least make him an unofficial rule that no one in the Stars takes the number out of respect for him
@michaelhuddleston I agree. I cant either. I remember watching this when I was 9. I was already a North Stars fan but Modano has been just amazing and Im gonna miss the guy for sure. I hate to say it but Id rather have him retire at this point. Cant imagine him with another team. Makes me sick.
In fact, if you look at the players from that draft, you would likely keep Modano at #1 if you knew what would be beack then. And Linden likely would drop. Jeremy Roenick, Teemu Selanne, Rob Blake, Alex Mogilny, Rod Brind'Amour, Mark Recchi. Tough list for Linden to stay at #2.
Modano did whatever it took to win. He was without a doubt one of the best 2 way players in the league throughout his prime. I would put him up head to head vs Joe Sakic any day of the week. In fact, head to head in their primes in the 99 and 2000 Conf Finals, Modano outplayed him. Which was vital. Lou Nanne drafted Modano with the feeling that he would be a more offensive player and more of a franchise player and he was right. He could easily be argued as a top 20 forward.
I remember watching that when I was 9. Thank God they went with Modano. Not that Linden wwas bad or anything but theres no comparision. Modano=superstar. Linden's had his moment, but nothing like Modano. Points arent everything but Modano has been as good a 2way player as you could ask for. So dominant. Ya' know.
One of the best drafts ever and it was a stepping stone for him to come to dallas where he has continued his awesome career which is all I care about and he will no doubt be inducted into the NHL hall of fame some day. Dallas love Mikey Mo.
So your a 37 year old that's still on youtube. Ouch, i feel sorry for you. I wonder if you've ever had a girlfriend before. I bet you live with your mom.
First off, because the "insult" was nothing but lame.
You try to insult someone you know nothing about and when another one insults you, you start to cry about it. That my friend is the definition of a deserving facepalm.
You just insulted some one you didn't know, I may not know who you are, But i sure know what you are. Also , you really need to find what the definition of "cry" is.
Not only are you making a fool of yourself but you are also very funny. Also, you really need to find out what the definition of an insult is, because I sure didnt insult you in any way.
Whatever man he was a great player for us and he beat the Stars in 1994 and 2007 and he outshined Modano in both series Linden wouldn't have been a bad pick for the Stars. Points don't tell the whole story of whether one player is better than the other Linden did everything he could on the ice and from 1990 to 1997 he was one of the best players in hockey and was severely underrated. I wouldn't have traded him when he was in the 1994 playoffs for anyone in NHL history.
All I'm saying is that Linden wouldn't be a guy you regret drafting like "Oh we should of got Modano" or "We should of gotten Roenick" Linden was a terrific player in his own right just because in the regular season he gets 70 points hes mediocre to some people who never watched him play and base his play on his stats alone
Im not knocking Modano at all. Drafting players is a difficult process and having two franchise players at 1 and 2 is rare Linden wouldnt have been a bad pick at 1st overall
Linden was really good. Modano was great. 2 very different players. Linden scored some clutch goals for the Canucks and had some clutch games. But Modano was all that and more for the Stars. And Linden quit putting up offense a lot earlier than Modano. Not that thats what its all about, but he wasnt the impact player Modano was. Modano you could rank in the top 20 forwards of all-time when its all said and done. Linden, not sure he would crack the top 50.
But here's the thing, I don't understand how people would be disappointed with picking Linden over Modano hell I would've been glad the Canucks picked Linden even if Modano was still available after him and no maybe you would list Modano as a top 20 forward of all time but I wouldn't. The game isn't all about goals and putting up points its like Ryan Kesler on the Canucks right now you do everything it takes to win Modano didn't do that but Linden did
I'm not saying Modano's point production doesn't speak for itself I'm saying Linden did everything he was our franchise player until about 1997 when the team was a mess. Modano lasted a lot longer that is where the difference is if your looking at it like that however Linden was still on Team Canada for 1998 so his overall play was still great at the time. I'm just saying Linden's jersey is in GM Place's rafters I think its sad that people underrate him so bad.
He signed a contract to retire in Dallas? Like Brett Favre signed his contract to retire in Green Bay?
His contract is up at the end of the upcoming season and he is free to go where he wants, if he decides to play another year. He is incredibly close to lots of people up there, in hockey and out of it. Anyway, who knows but I say that because I work for the Hicks Group here in Dallas and that is the rumor.
hahahaha... You really are suicidal. Your just another poser hiding behind the anonymity of the internet when calling people names. hahaha... I have to say, your credibility just went out the window genius. At the current time, he is done at the end of the upcoming year and that is a fact. What's so hard to believe about working for an organization that among other things, owns a sports team? Do this, call 'Pam' in the Frisco office and ask her about Beausant. Your an idiot, congrats.
that hair is fantastic. it was bitter sweet watching him raise the cup here in buffalo. awesome hockey player and fun to watch

@nhlhockeyman8 Teemu Selanne was drafted in 1988, but he played his first NHL game in 1992.
Same goes with Dominik Hasek. Hasek was drafted in 1983, but didn't play until 1990. Hasek currently plays with HC Spartak Moscow of the KHL.
