The only other version of this beautiful song that I've heard was released on 'Joan Baez In Concert, Part 2.' This arrangement & performance are brilliant.
Thanks for posting this fantastic haunting song. After hearing it on LWJH I just knew I'd heard it before somewhere. After a quick rummage through my CD collection, I found that Saint Etienne had written a song, The Boy Scouts of America, based on the same traditional English folk melody. Saint Etienne's song is on their 1994 album, Tiger Bay, and is well worth seeking out.
If anyone's interested, I've just posted the two songs side by side on YouTube.
The Unthanks should say thanks to an italian genius songwriter about this song. Check out : Fabrizio De Andre' Amore che vieni Amore che vai . Is exactly the same melody. Heard this song on Tv yesterday and I couldn't believe it!
@thelastmuseum Just checked out the Fabrizio De Andre song and the two songs are not even similar. The song Queen Of Hearts is an English folk song from at least the 19th Century and has been covered or re-versioned by many artists. Unfortunately, Fabrizio de Andre is not one of them
I watched Jools this week for Lykke Li, whom I love. However, I am now delighted to discover the Unthanks' music - so haunting and beautiful! Can't wait to get their albums now.
This is what I adore about 'Late Night with...'. Discovering new music I normally wouldn't. I instantly fell in love with these girls when I heard this. And discovered Eric Bibb from a previous show too, possibly my favourite, definately my most listened to modern blues artist ever. I don't watch this program enough and I can't give enough ratings to this song, absolutely love it x
Amazing what little gems you discover on Jools after stumbling in from a night on the lash. A floating, ethereal melody that makes folk music accessible to those (like me) who usually dismiss it as a dated genre. Like Adele, sisters Rachel and Becky make music for the ears, not the eyes. Adele has carved her niche doing that. With more songs like Queen of Hearts, maybe the Unthanks could do for folk what Adele has done for blues-soul.
Going to see these lovely ladies perform soon - thanks to my fab fiancé for the best valentine's day pressie ever!

I discovered Thea Gilmore on Jools Holland back in 2001. This year it's the Unthanks. He sure knows how to pick 'em, and put on a good show too.

Saw them live in Oxford & they are such nice girls, very humble & "normal".
Great personalities & just wonderful live. Lovely individual voices & harmonies
