..the best lyric is the last "warm" in the the final phrase...he extends it and you can feel the warmth coming through the speakers...classic ..msbedwell said it best 2 posts back...
Even if he was mob related, or Mafia related, i say: thank you the mob or the mafia for having handed us the greatest singer of the previous Century and perhaps subsequent ones as well.
its all these different elements coming together in his voice....phrasing, heart, space, diction, and perhaps most of all life experience--heartache.....he balances all these elements effortlessly....there is Sinatra--then there are all the others.....
I read that he was a very complicated person -but who cares? I never worked nor an association of one of the world's greatest singer, I just love his voice, his music, and his style tremendously.
Great song. Incidentally Cahn's first name was Sammy, but the poster has a J (obviously a typo). I love the opposition between "sighing softly" and the redemptive, "smiling gently" and the redemptive shift to plural for the final "Septembers," as if the past has now been redeemed too. At the risk of rewriting Sammy Cahn, I would have used "cold September" the first time to contrast against the redemptive "warm" September at song's end. I would also prefer "smiling sweetly" instead of "gently."
Is this the original release? The lyrics have been altered slightly- '...All the golden warm Septembers...' was originally '...The golden warm Septembers...' and is attack is somewhat different as well?
Richard40171..question to you..you also wanna repaint the Mona Lisa ???...sheesh....
