Just when I had packed up LightWave and was standing there taking one last look round the room with suitcase in hand something always comes along and starts a sexy party! I've seen lots of excellent, world class XSI rigs but this is... is... impossible in LW isn't it?!? I am beyond words, incredible work!!!
at 2:40 how did you get the hand to move with the head for that short amount of time, is there a way of temporarily parenting one object to another and then unparenting it?
You absolutely can rig in Lightwave. It's inefficient and by no means intuitive or user-friendly, but it can be done to great effect once the hurdles are overcome.
Actually I find it very user friendly and efficient... a lot of the more complex things are far quicker and easier to set up than in the likes of max or maya.
I've been using Lightwave for 5 years now and it's one of the areas I still have a ton of trouble and can never get working right. It's possible I'm just rig-retarded, but. :P Even if I break down and just use IKBoost, I can never get my model to deform properly even after spending hours playing with the weight maps. It's possible I have bad technique, but it's hard to learn a good one. Lots of tutorials cover boning, but I've never seen a one that tackles weights, IMO the hardest part of a rig.
As you may note on the intial intro spin to my reel, I use a separate deform rig, bound to the control rig.. which is not too different to how its done in other packages, where controllers and deformers are treated, and applied separtely for maximum control...
Amazing reel! Just finished my BFA/digital arts degree at Bowling Green State University and all I have to say is....impressive!
Mind sending me an email sometime explaining how you went about pursing your career in modeling/animation. I would really appreciate it if you find some time out of your day to explain.
They are that, and they certainly speed up, or streamline certain things... but almost everything you see here can be done in LW 7.5... the only exceptions are the rotationalally matched space switching for IK limbs(though position is possible) and the secondary controllers on the facial setup.

Nice work. Don't see too many TD reels done in Lightwave. Really cool tools they have. I remember "Skelegons" a few versions back.
