On one hand, he arguably saved more lives than any other invidual in modern times through his humanitarian efforts; on the other, he was the monster who had fellow Americans, WWI Vets, murdered for demanding their rights. So both a hero and a piece of shit.
@SSArcher11 Yes, he helped organize a massive humanitarian effort in Europe during WWI and in Russia during a famine that followed the Revolution. At one point his organization, the ARA, was feeding 10 million people every day. Unfortunately, he was unwilling to organize a similar effort to help Americans during the Great Depression. He was stellar as a relief organizer, but a lousy president in more ways than one.
@SSArcher11 ....he was a piece of garbage that called in troops to fire upon WWI veterans that were only asking for the money they were promised....These were men that fought in the trenches in the worst conditions imaginable....some were killed, one of the killed was a veteran that survived the horrors of Belleau Wood...so in reality Mr Hoover was a piece of shit...
@RoosterCogburn1008 ...BULLSHIT! the story of McArthur acting against Hoover's orders was concocted so that it would not jeapordize the upcoming election.....and trust me, I am not in any way sticking up for McArthur as he also was a lowlfie pussy piece of shit as well....also the most over rated general in American history..
In his statements, Mr. Hoover says he wants an America where everyone can have economic and social freedom. But his policies didn't send us there. He could never reconcile his heart with his head.
Same old democrats. They are calling for change even back then but we know what kind of change they want to embrace. Did you see how hoover differentiated between change and the kind of change that FDR wanted? This seems to suggest that democrats want a particular kind of change while republicans seem to oppose it. Now I wonder what kind of change they want that would seirously alter American society that has always embraced free enterprise, enjoyment of wealth, and propery rights?
Wilson was horrible cuz he got us in WW1. Imagine if WW1 had ended in stalemate instead of teh allies winning. Reagan was great, he cut taxes, restored american confidence, and defeated the USSR. Carter was horrible and we are still living with his Iran blunder in 1978-79
World War 2 happened because the Treaty of Versailles was hugely unfair to the Central Powers, lead to the complete and utter collapse of the German economy and gave Hitler something to rally Germany against.
This would have happened if the US was involved or not. We had a VERY marginal role in WW1 as opposed to every war since then.
Reagan sold arms to Iran to fund contras in South America and then "aw shucks"ed it away. He was a criminal and should have been impeached and thrown out of office.
Instead, he was an actor that was good at playing the part of a president, so he fooled a lot of people.
Iran Contra was good policy but it was illegal. Iran and Iraq kept fighting one another and the contras brought free elections to Nicaragua. I am glad he did it and the American people didnt care
I'm not. I'm saying that he followed what the conservative politics of the day. Hoover believed the depression should be left to run its course, high tariffs, and prohibition. Mccain supports Tax cus for rich, the war in Iraq, and everything else conservatives do today. the point of the matter is that Hoover folloewd his conservative principles, and got the blame for it by doing so so. I wasn't comparing Hoover to Mccain, just their positions to eachother. I'm betting Mccain would be better.
Actually Hoover was the opposite, he did not follow the "lazy-unfair" politics of Harding and Coolidge, in fact, Hoover created a series of Public Works projects that would later be the foundation of FDR's "New Deal" the reason Hoover was despised so much, was because to Dems; He was a Republican to GOP's; He was a wild liberal. The man was not liked on both fronts.
It's funny to see Republicans still claiming Roosevelt as their own, when he was basically so liberal that he got kicked out of his own party in favor of the much more conservative Taft in 1912.
Roosevelt was pro-union, anti-monopoly and believed in a welfare state. He would be a Democrat if he were around today.
His own daughter, Alice, despite claiming herself as a Republican, voted mainly Democratic (mainly because she hated the post-Roosevelt Republicans).
wrong Roosevelt was "kicked out" because he said he wasn't going to run again. Guess what he decided to run again, but it was to late to take the republican ticket.
Too bad, Mr. Hoover that you didn't rise to the leadership abilities of your great predecessors Harding and Coolidge. "Historians" always rank you higher than they, but historical fact proves otherwise; you were completely out of your depth in the presidency, a complete failure, and you even allowed the Army veterans to be fired upon when they marched on Washington.

Mr. Hoover was proof that a man can be great without being a successful president. As Sec. of Commerce he actually ran the dept. in the black.
He was a self-made man who masterminded humanitarian relief in Europe.
Very similar to fellow engineer Jimmy Carter.

@bobbya16 He didn't do that. He only ordered that they be removed. It was McArthur who shot them down, without orders to do so.

Or this a valiant but failed attempt to keep GW Bush from the bottom rung!
Wilson is the upper 1/3.... Washington, Jefferson, Linclon, FDR, Jackson, Madison, Monroe, TDR, Wilson, IKE, Truman, Kennedy,.....
Reagan & Grant rate the same.. ran sloppy Administrations & not engaged
Tell us more about the greatness of: Taft, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Bush 1, and Bush 2...

He was great President...
he kept us out of that war until it end up on our shores...
Then made the winning difference as the Western DEMOCRACIES were losing strength...
The Republicans of the time would left Europe to authoritarian monarchs or totalitarian Bolsheviks...

He cut taxes... using the logic that cutting taxes is always good, shouldn't we just get rid of taxes altogether?
And Reagan did not defeat the USSR. You are fucking delusional on that point.
