Some people have so much and others so little. My friend Jesse is currently homeless and as winter approaches I worry greatly about him! He is poor as can be. It doesn't hit home until you see your best friend on the streets. This is his channel and I am trying to rally support for him to let him know that there are people out there who do care about him. I just don't know what to do to help him. I ve been documenting his journey with videos to open the eyes of the world.
San Diego, a truly nice city....if you can afford to live in one of the decent parts. If not, it is not so pleasant, you will have a hard time insulating yourself from the filthy aspects of this city. Downtown has some great areas, but, it also has a lot of areas filled with drugged out dirty bums crapping/urinating on the sidewalks. Neighborhoods south and east of downtown are pretty sketchy. North of town is your best bet if you only speak english.
I disagree with Dawn's comments. I think some people have disorders and no support like she got. Women have more shelters and programs than men. And the programs are ususally shit.
@EVERYONEISHUMAN BS From eexperience, there are more shelters for men and the ones that do cater to womyn are for domestic violence and good luck in our patriarchal, misogynist society getting a restraining order for that! Even if there are more shelters for womyn in certain areas, WE NEED THEM due to disproportionate imbalance of power held by men over womyn in our patriarchal society.
@EVERYONEISHUMAN Alot of the homeless population are NOT drug abusers, but mentally delayed people who - due to the lack of programs that can help them whose funds get diverted instead to prisons and war crimes (Iraq) - have no support. I fear where my mentally disabled brother will be once my parents - who are getting up there in age - succumb.
HL is a choice by some but too many are HL bc of mental disorders and ignorance. Sadly if you are HL don't tell prospective employers you are they will not hire you in fact they will aviod you for coming out. You can be HL in todays world and still function. You have to bend some facts but do so or you will remain HL. Number one you must have communication cell phones can make your HL period much shorter. Get clean this means go to a bathroom take a ho bath but make sure you don't smell.

Cakerolled: Many people are only one pay check away from being homeless, too. When you bypass a homeless american, do you give them your spare change? In a way, it is a small taxation for a good purpose.
Stop blaming the propertyless for being propertyless. In a country where a microscopic handfull of rich freeloaders own half of everything worth owning, it is clear that Capitalism is the root cause of homelessness, poverty, and unemployment. What the homeless, the poor, and the unemployed need is firepower. Political power grows out the barrel of a gun.
I don't blame capitalism, which tends to make all goods more affordable for everyone. I blame the government which monopolizes what may be used as currency. If they have control of the currency, they have control to set prices, therefore pricing many people out of the market through various programs and subsidies, especially in the housing, medical care, and agriculture industries. They make the essentials extremely expensive, while every other product becomes more affordable over time.
That's what's wrong with this dumb ass world! How would you feel if you lost all of your money, your home, your dignity? Would you then have self pride and look down on the people who we're once below you? Being homeless is not funny! I know how it feels to be like that, but I've worked hard to be who I am today! Getting jobs now and days is hard as hell. It's not that easy. believe me.
1st to all the evil minded people who put down the homeless people. 1-You cant get a job without a home address, 2-You also need a home phone number 3-Some and even most jobs now a days require 3 References. Some Jobs wont hire You if you have bad credit. Some jobs wont hire You if You have a pre-existing medical condition
Dawn made the right choice. I spent a long time on the streets because of bad decisions I made. When I finally made the decision to give up my addiction help was available. You have to want it to make it work.
The major problem in San Diego is lack of low income rent. Craigslist/ Roomshares all over the country has 200 to 300 dollar rentals. We, as low income may have to use 1/2 to 3/4 of pay to rent a room
The problem with low income rentals is that they tend to attract tons of crime, and other residents don't want that in their neighborhoods. Just look at the Golden West Hotel in downtown San Diego. It's considered low-income, and it's downright shady.
Dawn is lucky she got some form of help, but she is ignorant to whats going on. She got help, she is obviously slow in some capacity. There are families on the streets and they dont chose to be there. Hasnt anyone heard of the working homeless, holding down a job, no addictions, just not able to earn enough for rent or save for a rental bond.
Dawn has some very good points about homeless people i cna sorta relate that people choose to be one thing and they dont want to change becuz my dad is a hardcore smoker and a hardcore alcoholic and he wont quit either of those and its slowly killing him and a few times he was really close to being homeless. the video was very touching thnk you (i dont live with him btw)
i did not want to be homeless either but was forced on to the streets NO ONE WANTS TO BE HOMELESS i remember it well BRING BACK THE PUBLIC WELFARE STATE PROGRAMS AND WATCH THE HOMELESS DISSAPEAR !!!
1FunHater i want to hear this directly that ALL HOMELESS deliberately choose to FREEZE TO DEATH on the COLD homicide streets that homeless women choose to be RAPED because they are HOMELESS !!! ???
what social services ? where ?? WELFARE has been CUT OFF nad it is GONE !!
DESCRIBE WHAT SERVICES WHERE ?? there is none at all
this woman is full of shit on this video!! NOBODY chooses to be HOMELESS just like NOBODY chooses to be BORN how and where !! man! is he ever FULL OF SHIT
I personally know many homeless men and women who choose to be homeless and there's nothing wrong with that if that's their choice. For most of us, living in main stream society works for us, but for many folks, it's a struggle. Some people choose to shun the available services offered in most large communities, like San Diego. Drug and Alcohol addiction and mental illness often play into this, but not for all.
Um, no. People DO choose to be homeless. They might not end up there by choice, but under certain circumstances (mental illness, substance abuse, etcetera), it is easier to stay on the streets. If you were hooked on drugs, do you think you'd want to have to follow the rules of a program? No! Some people can't deal with a conventional lifestyle. Also, no one is going to freeze in San Diego.
I agree on that token as well! There's both types on the street: the type you just mentioned, and the type that doesn't want to be there but has no choice (and even then it could be argued they do).
Some may not want to be homeless..but most just dont have or are not capable of realising what it takes to get off the streets. It is a growing problem and a sad one. The sad thing..no one seems to care. Its all about ME in this age of evil.
I agree; I should rephrase that comment, and say that it's not a choice for ALL homeless. But, Dawn must know somewhat what she's talking about because she used to _be_ in the homeless boat! LOL But then, she could be generalizing without having talked to many people then, to find out, during her homeless stint.
Thought you might be interested in an open call for short films; details are at wgbh.org/producingfortv. (Selected films will receive financial and editorial support.)

I will admit that some folks are homeless by choice.
There are a lot of teenagers and twenty-somethings in San Francisco who love the "lifestyle" and won't even try to find jobs. I've seen it firsthand.

Those two homeless people looked very clean to sleeping rough?
If you afford to eat and clean up now and again and not get into fights it can't be too bad in a warm climate?
Yes, I know it would not be easy, but better than freezing further up country?
At least they have their lives, instead of being corporate robot in an office block somewhere?
