  • Henry would have loved those All-You-Can-Eat restaurants. ;)

  • HOOOLLLLYYYY SHOOOOTTT.

  • Let me discover if anyone read about of DietOramy program regime (google to learn more)? I've researched about this from a friend of mine who burned plenty of belly fat, however he's a little like a fanatic, so is there anybody typical around :D to be able to confirm the actual efficiency of this dietary regime?

  • I wonder if he reincarnated as a vegetarian or vegan.

  • Fascinating thanks for uploading these!

  • Rannulph fiennes and mike stroud on their man hauling trek across antractica ate around 10, 000 calories a day.

They literally starved because they were expending much more energy.

It all to do with calories used and calories eaten.

  • They sell rabbit meat in stores there in the UK?! You can't find that stuff in most stores in the US.

  • @graywolf7 They also have horse.

  • @graywolf7 In the US, you can't find more than maybe 4 different types of meat.

  • @PrincessKLS You're going to the wrong stores.

  • This film is misleading!

The Tudor diet wasn't just bread and meat. They ate a lot of fish too especially during lent.

Also a wide variety of fruits not just the strawberries mentioned here.

Vegetables may have been consumed in larger quantities by the poor who could not afford meat but the rich ate them too in the form of cooked 'sallats'.

  • @MsLivilla Granted that you know more about the Tutor era than me, but this film is only about Henry VIII's diet. It does not imply that every Tutor era person, rich or poor, ate like this.

  • @Steve17010 It's Tudor btw-not Tutor. :)

  • Sounds like he stayed drunk with all that ale and wine.

  • he was a big lad

  • £484.70 pounds! my word

  • Oh hai! Have you thought about intellectus 424 diet (search on google)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my buddy lost a ton of weight with it.

  • Oh hello! Have you thought about cleverous 402 diet (google it)? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cooworker lost a ton of weight with it.

  • i love lucy worsley

  • perhaps he was the early version of epic meal time?

  • Very cool!!! Such an interesting perspective! 5000 calories a day - completely bonkers. I'd be throwing up after steak number two!

  • @lestypuss "Very cool!!! Such an interesting perspective! 5000 calories a day - completely bonkers. I'd be throwing up after steak number two!"

5000 calories is reckoned to be the requirements for the average British (and probably every other nations') squaddie. It isn't over much for an active man. Henry's problem was that once he hurt his leg he stopped being active and became the fattie we know from Holbein's paintings.

  • @oarfrost Yes, I read that the Tour de France competitors average 10,000 cals a day!! You are right. Once he injured his leg, his diet didn't change and he just got fatter. . It's all about not putting in more than you put out in the end. Henas didn't know that, evidently. Food was the ultimate sign of wealth.

  • @lestypuss I have just read an interesting book on the Spanish Armada. In it the author suggests that one of the reasons the Spanish lost was that, on a daily allowance of 4,000 calories, the sheer slog of manning a 16th century sailing ship meant that the sailors were starving to death.

  • @lestypuss I am a keen cyclist and I have calculated that I burn around 20 calories per km. I suspect those doing the Tour de France are burning at twice my rate given the speed and conditions. That would be equivalent to 190km per day (taking off around 2,500 calories for body functions).

    Maybe my calculations are out?

  • @oarfrost When I was in the army, it does not strike me that I was getting 5,000 calories a day but in those days no-one was counting.

  • @alanheath "When I was in the army, it does not strike me that I was getting 5,000 calories a day but in those days no-one was counting."

A friend was was an army cook or whatever they are called these days and he said (a) the guidelines were 5,000 calories (b) even so, because the army believes that an idle soldier is an unhappy soldier, many new recruits lost weight and (c) having watched many a hungry squaddie shovelling it in, he didn't think the food touched the sides on the way down.

  • @oarfrost We could eat whatever we wanted - in camp it was a buffet and it was very good - at least I thought so at the time. However I did not like meal times, particularly tea which I felt was far too early and once complained about this. Still, one could take things out of the mess hall and eat them later.

  • Ok....im just jealous that cashiers get to sit!! I had to stand all day everyday for two years!! UGH

  • @snowwhite923 I was thinking the same thing!!!

  • no one eats swan anymore....i didn´t know we could eat it...

  • @nacht98 In the UK i think its illegal to kill swans and eat them. Since their the monarchs birds.

  • heart attack waiting to happen

  • The Tudors brought me here!

  • I'm a bit curious about the part that mentions that he ate a lot of sweets. What constituted for 'sweets' in that day? Pies maybe?

  • @MethodForDisaster 'sweets' in those days were considerably more than just pies!

Marchpane, comfits, sugar paste 'subtleties',jellies, marmalade, custards, syllabub, suckets, biscuits, gingerbread, flavoured creams etc, etc.

  • Jesus, that much milk!!!!! >_<

  • I think Lucy had a bit of a sore throat on this video.

  • 5000433.reality check.the animals you devour have secondary vegetable protein stored in their muscle tissue an inferior way to assimilate protein.vegans who eat veg, fruit, pusles etc enjoy primary vegetable protein more easily assimilated.a dead body diet increases cholesterol, obesity, bowel and many other cancers.the moral and ethical considerations are obviously way beyond.my advice?join bupa asap!

  • @reevedavey You both made good points but, and I'm trying to be polite with this next statement so forgive me if I'm not, you seem to be rather biased. A staunch vegetarian, perhaps? Not all meat is bad for you and can provide an excellent, low-fat source of protein (turkey, chicken), and essential oils (fish). You did explain your point much better than the other chap, though. I for one much prefer veg to meat, I must admit, but I also love fish and seafood.

  • Complete PC nanny stae BS. Henry was a physical man who hunted, played tennis, jousted, etc etc. So weasel satements like "Henry ate 5000 calories a day, more than twice the recommended amount for a man today" is innacurate crap. The average 2000 cals for a man today is totally adequate, if he plans on doing more than walking 10 metres to his car, sit in his office punching computer keys, etc.

  • He's interred at St.Georges Chapel. Why not disinter him and conduct a real autosy? Think what could learned!

  • I need to get a job at that grocery store! They get to sit down! I used to work in retail in the US when I was younger and we had to stand for hours on end!

  • With that all meat diet I feel bad for his "groom of the stool."

  • He needs to go sign up for the biggest loser.

  • @MrSkinfan Nah. He would have Bob and Dolvett executed.

  • wait, if the water isn't safe to drink, how the hell do they make the ale?

  • @Rageah0lic Same way they make Beer, I supose.

  • @Rageah0lic They use the infected water. The fermentation kills the impurities in it.

  • I liked your video very much.

  • Wouldn't like to be stuck in Heny VIIIs toilet when he "had to go...."

  • henry VIII kind of reminds me of Jabba the Hutt lol

  • @HardikG121 or baron Vladimir Harkonnen

  • @HardikG121

    baha ha nice one

  • sorry what was the video about ;-)

  • wouldnt the food be different tho? i mean compared to now everything is processed and made of fat?!

  • @2:37, she asks the clerk about "too much meat for one man to eat". Hello, McFly? Do you think asking someone who obviously appears to have originated from South Asia and sporting a BINDI would not have some modicum of bias to express concerning MEAT CONSUMPTION? The lassies brain must have BLUE SCREENED!

  • How did this guy not die of a heart attack, or the gout?\

  • @mizcamaro At the end of the day, it was his diet that killed him aged 56 - and that was in spite of probably burning a lot of calories in his younger days.

There is a warning there for all of us - especially as today we know how many calories food has!

  • he might not have lived a long life but he lived a mans dream.. king of england, ultimate power, unlimited women, shit loads of food, all the gadgets of his time...dang

  • @NorthWeezy2010 It gives credence to the idea that [quality of life] + [quantity of life] = a constant. However, this does not preclude the Hobbesian idea of human life in a state of nature being among others nasty, brutish and short.

  • meanwhile in africa....

  • My diet consists of mostly chicken, beef, occasionally pork on rare occasions, no alcohol, some sweets, water, and V8 Fusion juice to cover produce. I'd say my diet's far healthier than Henry's.....

  • Very exciting to watch.

  • white bread doesn't cause constipation, none of it reaches the colon undigested, and yes, vegetables are highly indigestible because they are high in fiber, and fiber by it's very definition is an indigestible carbohydrate

  • How about an ideal Deadliest Warrior match: Henry VIII vs. Elvis who the King Match? Or how about a three way Deadliest Warrior match: Henry VIII vs. Elvis vs. BIggie Smalls aka NORTIOUS B.I.G.

    Who will win?

  • the man ate.....like a king

  • I do eat a good quantity of meat in my diet so I have alot of protein. Though the ampunt of meat that was bought in this video seems to like the amount of meat I would have eaten in a month. I don't eat vegetables, and I rarely eat fruit, but I do drink alot of V8 Fusion juice, so I believe my produce issue is taken care of. :)

  • @Jakegothicsnake sup henry???

  • @babeeshopiez123 What??

  • @Jakegothicsnake It was a joke....

  • omg nothing healthy at all

  • This is giving me diabeetus.

  • So whereas Henry was bothered about the marriage restriction he found in Leviticus he did not get round to chapter ten of the same book which would tell a good Christian prince what he can eat and what he can't.

  • @alanheath Dietary laws were disregarded because that was what [cringing in anticipating charges of judeopathy but I'm merely bringing up the symptoms of a malfunctioning monotheism] the Jews practiced. As one granted the title of "Fidei Defensor" he did succeed in firmly establishing meat consumption with Christianity in the Western mind.

  • @525alive The point here is that people will believe what they want to as far as religion is concerned. Henry was worried about the rather obscure verse in Leviticus which is not very clear but ignored the bit about diet which is utterly clear and as for the commandment about killing - well, I presume the page was torn out of his Bible!

  • @525alive I think it is just a matter of choosing which bits of the Bible suit you and ignoring those that don't. The Bible caters for this of course by frequently contradicting itself. Leviticus is crystal clear what is edible and what is not but as Henry (like most other rulers) was just interested in it for power and getting rid of women when he so chose then that was really of no consequence.

  • Food for peasants? No wonder the peasants lived so long? lol. OMG. Dunno how he had sex with his wives. They would have died from him rolling over in the bed on them.

  • @DuttyGyal718 Adding to that somewhat relevant comment, Anne Bolyn is alleged to have made comments about his abilities in that department. With this diet, maybe she had a point.

  • @DuttyGyal718 ha LOL.

  • @DuttyGyal718 I always wondered about that! He could have crushed their rib cages or heaven help them try to breathe. And then there is that nasty leg wound to deal with. I think Anne of Cleaves was lucky in a way. She just slept next to him and only had to smell his sore leg.

  • Stop eating so many pies henry , and get some excercise !

  • @white1whidow he really couldn't with the varicose ulcer on his leg.

  • Hey that's like my diet.

  • this is how a real man eats who wants to live past 50 anyway

  • its not what he ate its jsut how fucking muxh of it the fat loser pounded into his belly

  • she dont know differance from ale from lager tut tut

  • nasty imagine the breath of them with no tooth paste/ obestiy/ and ucler ewww

  • maybe the peasants in his age were much healthier than him coz they ate veggies while he didn't ...

  • unlucky for henry...there were no gyms around that time...or else he would be much slimer i guese

  • If Henry VIII were alive today, I wonder how many times he would visit places like McDonalds or KFC.

  • "Recommended amount" bs for a working stiff the caloric diet for someone who actually works is 3000-6000 a day and load up on the fat it doesnt cause anything more examples of fascisting dieting nuts. Henry Viii was a tyrant who gorged himself but it wasn't 5,000 calories it was mor elike 8-10 thousands a day

  • @deltapunk21 Right - he was eating much more. And why does she say "13 dishes a day" like a big deal? If that's the total number of different foods a day, well that's just about right! For a king of Hank's time and rank, that's poorhouse eating. Even if he ate just 2 "sitdown" meals a day, 6-7 foods per meal is not kingly at all.

And "no veggies"? Balls. Cabbage, lettuce, carrots, turnips, leeks, onions and many types of greens They were thought to be insignificant, not worth mentioning.

  • Wow!! Is that all?

  • I always thought the syphilis argument was rubbish because without treatment it would have been more obvious. Look at cases like Cesare Borgia, who had to wear a mask because his face was rotting off and other European kings who kept out of pubic sight towards the end of their life. Type 2 diabetes makes perfect sense, but especially when you see this diet! Imagine thinking raw vegetables inedible! Thankyou so much for your very informative clips. Keep up the brilliant work <3

  • gout

  • Henry wouldn't eat it all himself. He would give the leftovers to the court, who would give their leftovers to the next in the social scale and so on to the homeless, who would hang around outside the walls of wherever the king and court were at the time. These days we just throw it all away to landfill.

And no LAGER. The water was unfit to drink for centuries to come, which is why children and invalids were always given beer to drink. Ale. Not lager in Britain.

  • Didn't he have red hair in his youth? Holbein's painting tend to be so similiar it is difficult to get an idea of the court's appearances.

  • @goldensassenach I agree. I'd love to know what Anne Boleyn looked like. Most of the portraits of her look like they have been painted to an ideal (tiny mouth, certain shaped eyes with no lashes, high forehead). There is one painting by an Italian artist of an unnamed girl that was later declared to be of Anne (google Anne Boleyn and you'll find it). It looks photo real and NOTHING like her portraits as Queen. I'd love to know if it's really her.

  • @goldensassenach oh yes he did Henry VIII have red hair in his youth so did Elizabeth 1

  • ; Strawberries are high in vitamin C, plus the broth, and sauces, which the meats were cooked in, were rich in vegetables, and herbs, usually strained-out after cooking, to increase the smoothness of the sauce, which was the popular way to serve sauces. The white bread was the entire wheat grain finely ground, similar to the modern Graham flour, except ground as fine as modern cake-flour.

    Cheers!

  • Once, a friend from England visited me. During a conversation of Tudor England we had, I said that whatever the other Henrys were like, Henry VIII was by far the worst.

His reply? "Oh, yes, he was a horrible bloke, he was!"

I think "a horrible bloke" is the nicest thing to call Henry VIII. Especially with his gluttony and disrespect for women.

  • Henry VIII vs. Elivs Presley In Deadliest Warrior or Mortal Combat? Which one shall win?

  • Picture Henry VIII going to Burger King?

  • @TBearM1776 Picture Henry VIII AS the Burger King?

  • @TBearM1776 I can get a better picture of him being Burger King. ^.^

  • @TBearM1776 I can picture Henry VIII as the mascot of Burger King.

  • @TBearM1776 or Carl Jr restaurant here in SO CAL LOL!

  • @TBearM1776 If Henry VIII went to Burger KING, he wouldn't place an order, he'd get an estimate.

  • Picture Richard Simmons trying to get Henry VIII to lose some weight? Oh boy there going to be trouble

  • @TBearM1776 how about Jillian Michaels from Biggest Loser LOL!

  • 484.00£ = $749.32 per week.....

yeah thats the grocery bill from hell.

  • That cashier worker must`ve been like WTFF

  • For an incredibly unhealthy and unfit man, it's a surprise to learn that he lived to be 55 (considered to be incredibly old in the 1500s) before succumbing to his medical problems. If he had remained healthy as he was in his youth, it's very possible that he could've lived past 80, maybe even 90 years old!

  • i love how she skeets in there at 1:06 shes very pretty for some reason

  • Now I do enjoy beef and chicken and bacon, but that would have taken me at least a 1/4 of a year to knock back all of the meat that that woman purchased!

  • During this time, it was a sign of prominence and opulence to have this much food, much less being able to eat it. In short it was expected for a King to be this opulent. Also, if a man had a "large" wife, people recognized you were doing well. They knew little about health, especially when bleeding was common to remove evil spirits thought to be causing the illness. Obviously, bleeding would cause more problems, so they would have bled the patient more. George Washington almost died from this.

  • Hey to all American on the YOU TUBE this special going be July 12 on National Geogrpahic channel here in the USA

    Check it out

  • And apparently our diets are bad in the modern era :P

  • -O_O duuuude, no wonder he was SO FAT!!

-wouldnt they be drunk all the time? or become alcoholics?

-1:31 got too distracted to listen to the narrator from watching her push that ridiculously filled cart! had to watch it 4 times...

    - Food for peasants? LMFAO!

    -2:05 got distracted AGAIN!!! GAH!

-holy crap, what the hell was he doing to expend all that energy he ate?!... or right nothing, hense why he got so goddamn HUUUGE!!!

  • @hop1pop Which would explain why some of the peasants lived longer. Eat thy greens!

  • her voice is very scratchy!

  • YOU CAN BUY BOOZE AT THE GROCERY STORE?!?! :O

  • He was a very big man. I'm not sure his exact height, but I'm pretty sure it was in between 6'2 - 6'5.

  • Did Henry VIII or/and his doctors knew what we know today???

  • @am1966ath

    LMFAO! hell no!!

  • @am1966ath They had very limited medical knowledge. Everything revolved around religious superstitions and good and evil humors. They would of had no knowledge of diabetes, and many diseases were given the name pox. They had poor sanitation and knew very little about the importance of cleanliness. That is why many women died of puperal fever (childbed fever).

  • @Saffron49 you mean that neither the king nor his doctors conected his bad health with what he was eating??? did Henry VIII BATHE OFTEN OR NOT??

There are contradictory sources about the cleanliness of prominent people.

Also a lot of people starved so be able to stuff yourself was a satus symbol i Guess.

  • @Saffron49

only the Europeans had very poor knowledge in the medical field because of the harsh tyrannical rule that Catholicism had upon the people back then. Go checkout the medical/technological breakthroughs the Chinese had done during this time period. For example, they discovered inoculation, a means of immunizing people from diseases such as small pox, hence why they have such a large population now-a-days, because they reached a population boom much sooner than anywhere else.

  • I think after watching this I think Henry VIII did have diabetes at end of his life the leg that wont' stop bleed that might be first sign

  • Very interesting!

  • Where do they get this information from?

  • @journeyofman2000 From the medical records that were kept.

Royal accounts were very thorough, from the moment he was born to the end of his life.

  • I know he ate tons. I saw Royal Deaths and Diseases, and Worst Jobs in History to get an idea of what he ate and how much... but I think he should have given his body a break.

But to be fair, he wasn't obese simply because he ate a lot. He used to take part in a lot of sports and often showed off his physical prowess to visitors from abroad. He was forced to stop when he suffered a serious jousting injury that most people believed could have easily killed him.

  • Frankly, I'm shocked the man lived as long as he did.

  • He was 6 and a half feet tall! A giant in those days as most men were under five feet. Also incredibly active till the last few years. Yes, the Tudor physicians could check the blood sugar. They tasted the urine. Gross but accurate for the day. His diet was far better than ours as it had zero additives, or toxins. Wine is good for you, so is ale. He was terrifying, fascinating, and deadly to many. What a king!

  • Don't think much to Henry VIII's body but I'd do littlemisssunnydale ;)

  • That explains why is leg would not heal!

  • Very grotesque program. Both in terms of the subject matter, and the attitude of the presenters.

  • Off topic: This lady is beautiful!!

  • Does anyone know the name of this movie? I'd like to order it

  • @baybeephinny it called inside the body of Henry VIII came on National Geographic channel

  • Oh my! That's a lot of food...

  • You can buy Beer at the grocery store in England? I live in Canada, we have to go to a separate liquor store.

  • @mistermajestyck

that's odd: over here in the US, you can get it in a grocery as well as from a liquor store. the Krogers at lake Jackson has an isle with some beer.

    not that I care-I don't drink.

  • @Albukhshi

I'm in Canada. You can't get alcohol in Grocery stores, or corner stores here. I'm sure that's for the best tho, anything to keep booze less easy for me to get right now is good

  • @mistermajestyck

    interesting.

  • Comment removed

  • What a fatty ahaha

  • (Jaws dropping)... man, that's lots of meat, alcohol and white bread!!!

  • God no wonder he was so fat. I bet if you showed him an apple or a broccoli that he wouldn't have known what it was lol!

  • Wonder how many poor animals died so that glutton could stuff himself...

  • what series/documentary is this from?

  • that's some body fat that dude had!!

  • I'm just wondering what she did with all that food afterwards.

  • @chocolatefountain95 maybe she was HUNGRY!!

  • @GoMidoriIsCool

well that will make her noticed

  • what?

  • @GoMidoriIsCool

    lugging all that food around.

  • @chocolatefountain95 yup or maybe she threw a dinner party

  • Nope... Not hungry anymore...

  • Oh, and don't forget the treatment for his ulcerated leg. Ground up pearls and led.

  • fuck me that guy can eat

  • After watching this, Im not hungry

  • how the hell did he live for so long? give me that diet and those diseases i'd die in a week.

  • Probably because the diet was progressive BBGenelie? Either that or because he did have an active lifestyle in his younger years which might have eased off the damage his poor diet was doing. I cannot imagine what his teeth would have looked like. All that meat must have given him godawful cavities. O_O

  • Off Topic

Oh wow, I've never seen a cashier sitting down before. I take it the customer does the bagging? For those prices somebody would be getting out of their comfy chair!

  • White bread, sugared wine, no vegetables... no wonder he was such a mess!

  • He had malaria, smallpox, diabetes and an infected ulcerated leg and he still lived to 50. No antibiotics, insulin BP medications etc. Must of had one hell of a constitution.

  • @Saffron49 till 55.

  • Like as to make our appetites more keen with eager compounds we our palate urge; As to prevent our maladies unseen we sicken to shun sickness when we purge
