what a bunch of hypocrites ! the song is about censorship and they bow to censorship to make a $. I never saw this video before now I'm really disappointed with these guys, so much for socialism. and they accused the Clash of selling out, what a load of wankers !
@sharkattacksteve I don't know, I think it's about more than just censorship... either way, this song still rocks. I can forgive them for this small transgression.
It's "boring Ollie North", not "poor old Ollie North", and "bread, jam, groceries and LARD" (not "rye"); (and yeah, it's "homosexuality", not "margarine" - a sinister edit here)

No one's making any noise now. Shh. We've been waiting for so long. They took away our films and tapes and notebooks. It's OK we've self censored this song but these lines are all individuals. There's no such thing as a song. Even the silent are now guilty. What's your line of questioning sir? I can't intercept a one word sentence. Inventor of war and secrecy, signs and scenery like a vintage toy. Isn't plastic surgery wonderful?
Satellite secret national security. Turning journalists into heroes takes some doing. Poor old Olly North down in the subway dealing drugs and guns. Turning little liars into heroes, it's what they've always done. This song promos margarine. It's in a pretended family relationship with the others on this record and on the charts and jukebox and in the radio. No one's making an noise now. Stay quiet.
All unacceptable gropings are being removed from the screen, only eyes full of unspeakable thoughts remain, even the silent are not guilty, baked beans sugar and margarine, bread jam groceries and rye, for the unsentimental, for the men who like the lady hard, the men who like the hard lady, afraid of being swamped, by selfishness and greed.
Wow...I sought this song out for the very purpose of listening to a song that promotes homosexuality! Margarine, sure, it has those evil hydrogenated oils that can lead one astray, but guess I'll have to dig out my old CD for complete satisfaction. Down with the tosspot censors! And thanks to you for posting what is one of my all-time-favorites (with its original wonderful, pre-tosspoted lyrics!).
I think at this point The Mekons were on a major label.....A&M, That might have been something to do with it. I guess there may have been concerns about airplay.
@martydibergi a real cop out though... at a time when clause 28 was a big issue, still reminds us that some bands and fanzine/anarchist writers were being raided and under scrutiny by the home office........... free country and all that!

"Poor Ollie North down in the subway dealing drugs and guns" , Great line- ha ha ha!
I think The Mekons Rock N Roll was their finest moment. That's the one i'd take to the desert island.

I want to hear Bruce Springsteen cover this. Can we petition to make that happen? It seems rational...

The lead singer of The Mekons reminds me of Steve Kilby of The Church, in fact this song reminds me a lot of The Ungarded Moment. I like this song.

If A&M did the cut, then yet again they show their cowardice and cretinism.
