This song represents a time in America that shall never be seen again. A song of hope written in a desperate time. Play it the next time you're on a highway through a wheat field drinking an ice cold coca cola, purchased from a hot metal red box, outside of a Flying A gas station. Then you'll understand the meaning of this song.
I LOVE THIS SONG THIS IS MY DAD FAVORITE SONG HOWEVER FOR IDIOTS CLAIMING TO DISLIKE THE SONG SO DESPARATE FOR ATTENTION TO TAKE TIME OUT OF YOUR LIFE TO CLICK DISLIKE IS JUST POTHEDIC ANYTHING OR SONG I DO NOT LIKE I JUST GO ON TO SONGS I DO LIKE I WOULD NOT TAKE TIME TO EXPRESS ANYTHING TILL NEXT TIME EVERYONE I LOVE THIS SONG KANSAS CITY CHIEFS KEEP IT GOIN LOVE MD
You old heads were lucky to hear all this great music when it first came out, getting to hear it new and see it in concert... I'm 24 and all my friends listen to Katy Perry and Gwen Stafani and Lady Gaga. I'd rather kill myself. I miss the old days even though I missed by a few decades.
@metalhartrockandroll all generations have good music amigo.even todays music has its good artists.im 36 and love music from since victorian era up to modern, spanish french italian and so on.look for the gems in each generation friend!youll be pleasantly surprised:)
I was born in Kansas city , Mo. in 1945 and everything he is singing about use to be very true next to new york and chicago it was the place to be for live jazz and r&b. The food was great to. the best soul food and the best rib joints in the country.
this has gotta be a fun song to play, my dad did it in front of many people and rocked out the guitar. I gotta brother friend who just visited his folks in kansas city.strange, my best friend lipped the words to this before he passed away.rip RichardB
Hey, I just skyped my Aunty and she told me to look up this song & play it, I'd never heard of it before. I'm from New Zealand and moved to KC 11mths ago, we're here for 2-3yrs. What a kool song, I love it, I'm gonna play it to the rest of my family at dinner tonite! lol... KC is a great place, I love it here, I'll never forget KC & this song!
when i graduated from high school in 1959, this was popular on the juke box that summer. I was in a club & only 16 yrs. old & looked 12. no can do anymore !
@ftjax I also graduated in 1959. Wow am I glad I went thru the fifties. What a wonderful teenage life I had. The best Music the best cars and no f in drugs.
This was the first song I sang on stage in front of a crowd for a talent show. I won second place that was 1966 and just a few month ago I when back to the same hall for an invite and did the same song again what a thrill 42 years later and I am still singing. Great old song I love it check out my new video Buster kitchin party the song is We Had It All by Kieth Richards of the Rolling Stones. Cheers
I love this song. I used to sing this song on Karaoke a few years back. It was my most requested song the patrons wanted me to do. AHHH BUT YOU KNOW YEAH MY STYLE, AHHH YEAH.
I thought it was a white guy too! I love this song and I've loved it since I first heard it on my collection of 50's songs as a kid. I hope you older guys can rest easy knowing that even an 18 year old loves this song =]
Sorry for my English and my lack of knowledge. I discovered this song in a cd of nr ones through the 50s and 60s and I was amazed .... wow .... the old rock and roll is not too different in essence from the current ones
I'm 15 and it makes me smile seeing people talking about how young they were when they first heard this song. It makes me feel good inside to have discovered something like this. I really like Oldies!
At least the slang back then still makes some sense to us today. I doubt the slang used in todays musuc, such as "mama/hoe getting crunk and working that ass for ma dawgs" will mean much in a few years time, let alone a few decades
The only thing I would change about this song is in my opinion, it is too short. I would add more lyrics and make it even more fun! It would be cool to find all the lyrics written for this song and incorporate all of them into it.
I must be nearing antiquity.,can remember this in mid fifties. While rhe other a.m.stations played "battle hymn of the republic" by the Mormon Choir, Wilbert rocked me with this one fo' I was old enough to know!
This Song is a Classic 12 Bar Blues Rocker, no doubt about it !! Considering the year, the electric guitar/piano impro part was years ahead of it's time Turn it up!!!
Proof, once again, that the 50s and 60s were the 'peak' of classic Rock and Roll ! it-doesnt-get-better ! R.I.P. Wilbert...not even the Beatles could improve this song !
YES....and,moreover,if the Beatles (greatest rock and roll group of all time ) couldnt improve on it,what does that tell ya' ? it tells ya : 'Wilbert, you 'OWN ' this song, my man ! C-L-A-S-S-I-C- !!!
I might post a video of how to do this on piano.
