  • But I still don't recommend huskies to be off-leash

  • A lot of people say that when huskies bolt they never come back but there was a time when my sibe got out of the yard and was out for 3hours but she did came back, thought I lost her at that time.

  • I've had 3 siberian's over 16 years now. All of mine have been off lead in popular dog walking places, and some forests we occasionally visit. But kept on leads in the park, streets etc. It is possible- you just have to make yourself more interesting than the thing they are running away too! Also, if their is any livestock near by, they are kept on lead for obvious reasons. The dogs love the freedom!

  • Hey, man, I know this is almost a year old, so I hope you can reply, but how old was Thunder when you trained him to do this? The angle of the camera's a little tricky, so it's hard for me to assess. I'm trying to do this with our Siberian who's about 9 months. Thanks and congratulations! Beautiful dog.

  • @ElMegaG He was definately over two years but not three yet. My method of training was more natural than orthadox and because i did it that way it took some time to find out what works. But it was basically getting the dog to respect and trust you first. Then on my walks I would get him to focus on me as much as possible. At first I used high value treats like real meat. But because he was un nuetered at the time he wanted to mark everything. I used that to my advantage.....

  • Ive been looking at getting a husky but was worried about there tendency to bolt, I plan to train it correctly taking time and patience as you said but just seeing it being done makes me happy to get one, I do not plan to walk it off the leash but if it does get off at least i know if its trained properly it wont be the end of the earth. Thanks

  • I knew it could be done! So do you think it's safe to have a husky off-leash as long as it knows how to come back?

  • @Animonstar95 It can be done, but it's not safe for any dog.

  • @GoneToTheSnowDogs I know it's a gamble to have any dog off leash, but I just needed proof that it could be done with a husky because of their tendancy to bolt and not come back.

  • @Animonstar95 It can be done. But it's still not safe. And not worth chancing the dogs life.

  • @GoneToTheSnowDogs I disagree, just a bit. If you have your dog off leash somewhere away from busy streets or something, the life isn't really in danger. And if your dog knows the re-call command, there shouldn't be any worry. I would never let my dog off leash if I didn't know he'd come back.

  • @GoneToTheSnowDogs Every dog is different. When I take my dog out in the field behind my house, I always bring the leash and treats. I take a look around to make sure there's no other people or dogs around, then let him off. I keep an eye out all the time to see if anyone's coming, because he will run if he sees someone. I trust my dog, and that's not a bad thing. Whether your dog comes when called depends on if HE thinks it's worth it.

  • he looks to be a bit thin for a husky ..... though he is lovely!

  • @MsMagsamillion I think this husky just had its coat blown, that's why it looks thin.

  • @thirst49 That's good! I just looked at the video again, he looks healthy :)
