The interesting thing about this movie is, how many movies and books it imitates, while still managing to be very entertaining. Costumes= Matrix, fahrenheit 451. Action scenes= The Matrix and John Woo films. Story lines: Mandatory, drug induced, emotion repression= THX1138, by George Lucas. Gov. control and burning of books= Fahrenheit 451. Gov. control of art, music, literature and family members turning in, offenders=1984. One man, rising to free a repressed society= Metropolis

@skybluemarshall well burning of books, oppression and stuff is based on the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. those novels and movies you mentioned also took it from somewhere else, so no one really owns those themes.

@661Sunshine I'm not claiming that anyone can own a theme or political philosophy and I'm not accusing the writer director of ripping anyone off. I'm saying that equilibrium is directly linked to those other films, both visually and thematically. I don't feel that borrowing different imagery from other films is stealing. Most of the time, it's a tribute. If you watch all of the earlier films I mentioned, you will see some glaring similarities to Equlibrium and not just thematic similarities.

@661Sunshine Also, I had more specific themes in mind. In Fahrenheight 451, a "Fireman" starts to read the books he's supposed to burn and it changes him. THX1138 illegally stops taking his pills and begins to feel love, emotions and sexual desires. In 1984, a man is mentally transformed, by experiencing an affair and buying banned items like books, art and music. The visual similarities of both 451's fireman and the black jackets used in The Matrix, are pretty obvious, in Equilibrium

@661Sunshine That is very true. Dystopian books and films draw heavily on totalitarian and fascist history. Equilibrium does as well. Kurt Wimmer filmed in Berlin, to capture the symbolism of Nazi architecture. It was designed to make the individual feel small vs the giant and powerful Nazi government. So, there are definitely some forms of Nazi symbolism in Equilibrium. I watch a ton of movies and I can't help but notice the similarities. I guess I sometimes see what I want to see.

It was hard to keep watching after they showed the mona lisa painted on a canvas (when of course the real of is painted on a piece of wood) and after that the "expert" comes and says its the real one lol it was hilarious.

He didnt even checked the back of the painting where you can clearly see the canvas.
