From what I hear... he was a glam singer that lost his mind and became "Stanley" and he was actually that way. No act. No bullshit, just a little nuts. He became like howard hughes or some shit.
if stanley was nothing but an act, he went after 200 percent. I saw them a couple of times and I can say that i could not describe the stench that is Stanley. I wish they would have putout more music cuz they were an awseome band.
The dude met Stanley walking down an alleyway in Van Nuys. He was dirty, smelly, and doing the 'baby, baby' rap. In the 'My Name Is Stanley' vid, you can see his old, restored Chevy. My friend sat in that car - actually locked in for a minute or two because Stanley held the door closed! - and he said that his pristinely restored classic was filled to the windowsills with McDonald's wrappers.
If he WAS a 'character actor' he blows everyone in Hollywood out of the water, by dedication alone.
I've read it was an act. Lots of stuff on the Internet presents it that way, not as in "was it an act or not," but "it was an act, why didn't you know that? I saw them live back in the day and I also assumed it was an act, at least in part. I, for one, had absolutely no problem with that.
I'm friends with their former guitar tech - I wouldn't have ever heard of them without him - and he says that's the way the guy is. I've met quite a few brilliant people who were 'weird' like that, and really, if they came up with that character, they're far more brilliant than they get credit for.
My friend - former tech - ran into him around Van Nuys about five years after they stopped touring, and Stanley was still the same - just buying electronic components for his electronic work.
It was a total act. The band knew that they needed something to differentiate them from every other band out there so they came up with the "Stanley" character. There are (allegedly) photos out there of Stanley before he cut his hair and became the character. Apparently he is working in real estate these days.
I'm also lanemergess here, but double as Vork: Web Poet. I used to see Stanley many times a week. My roomate was the guitarist for the defunct LSD part 2. He wanted me in the band, after they lost their deal, and Tommy quit. Stanley, and I were very close. He really was like that, around me anyway. He's the nicest guy, and always sat on the floor, by the garbage can at our parties. Those were the daze. peace, lanemergess/ aka vork
LSD was/is one of the most underrated bands ever...AMAZING songwriting...the music is timeless! Who cares about the gimmick aspect...these cats could write...the songs absolutely kill! KUDOS guys...get back out ASAP!!!
I have had the pleasure to see this band at the Thirsty Whale in River Grove Il.All I can say is what a terrific show! Stanley may not be a homeless guy.... He entertained us well..Rise above is one of my favorite songs.. we need this group back...
This band was great live. Stanley was an awesome singer. One of the times I saw them, Stanley came out into the audience shaking hands with people as he was singing. He smelled so bad and looked filthy!! I don't think it was an act. If it was, he was a great actor too !!!
@cyborg1970 They had to fish him out of the dumpster for the Limelight show because they were already on stage and Stan was Houdini.. Someone went out and found him in the dumpster taking a nap..
Man I met Chris thru a good friend that played drums for him, before he LSD went to CA.. That was awesome, he was/is brilliant and if I were him I would be putting this band back together cause these days his act would do better, IMO.. I'll dig around and see what archive I can post
"The band employed a GIMMICK in that their singer was allegedly homeless. This particular facet of the band gained them extra publicity in the press, yet may have detracted slightly from focusing on the band's music. The lead singer was later revealed to be Chris Stann"
In the late 80's and early 90's I produced a local hard rock video show on cable called Dallas rocks.I did an interview and live shoot with L.S.D. as well as other acts I am currently changing the VHS stuff over to DVD and will be posting some of this stuff soon I also have the video for school is for fools
Stanley was a very interesting cat, and at our house parties, he'd alwats be found on the floor next to the trash can. He brought me green oranges once, and even asked me to be in his band. I miss him! apb @ Sick Licks
major record labels only focus on promoting music for the sheeple of the world and that's why weak ass bands like Fall out boy ,Nickleback ,Maroon 5 continue to sell platinum . And because bands like L.S.D. are never properly promoted by record execs. and the sorry ass at radio never play them their music never gets heard the album bombs and the band is dropped from the label.I bet The Foo Fighters would never had gotten a chance if Dave had not been in Nirvana
That is exactly what happened with L.S.D. I witnessed the whole thing, and the second incarnation of L.S.D. rehearsed at our house/ garage/ recording studio in Toluca Lake, CA. I have 3 unreleased tracks posted among my vid's, and will always remember how special Stanley was. Nice comment! apb
Visit: maxqpeck Look at view all videos, and the first to come up is, " My Name Is Stanley. " I knew Stanley better than most, and he was truly eccentric. The second version of LSD rehearsed in our garage/studio in Toluca Lake, Ca., and a director friend of mine filmed this video there, before Stanley had his Classic car stolen, and bought a Benz Coupe. He was very well off, trust me. A.P.B.
were you a good friend of his?? it's so hard to find info on him, the band, their music,.........sad..........blue velvet moon .....i love to sing it as loud as i can...........such a talent stanley is......
Stanley makes more sense than any of the assheads I've ever seen in the world of rap music...and LSD was far more interesting than the millions of faceless hair bands of the 80's/early 90's. Gimmick? Ever hear of KISS???
saw them in LA, Stanley was roaming the audience b4 the show. everyone thought, who let the bum in the club. then he started playing blue velvet moon on the uke. slowly walking toward the stage then the band came out and stated playing "shitass" people thought stanley would get kicked out as he crawled onto the stage. holy shit hes the singer!!!most def the best show ive seen. heavy and bad ass. place went nuts. not a bad debut in LA. should have been huge.
For you idiots that think it was a gimmick, I can verify if fucking wasn't. When they were here in Minneapolis, Stanley slept in a cardboard box in the alley behind the club next to the tour bus. Sorry, thats not 'dedication' thats simply fucking crazy. He might have laid it on a bit more thick but, it wasn't much more of a stretch. When we saw them live that night, I could fucking smell him from across the damn stage.
Yep, not a gimmick. If it was, he was living it, therefore it couldn't have been. I used to see Stanley on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood roaming the streets several times a week. He used to hang out with the bums behind the liquor store 1 block down from the Whiskey. One day he came by the store and gave us tickets to see his show. Huh? This guy has a band? Best gdamn show I've ever been to.
Very stupid and very bad gimmick that not even dumb people fell for. The lousy acting coupled with mediocre music didn't help either. Better luck next time hacks.
Get the Tank, TC and SFF vids back up! And live shit. i know there has to be more LSD stuff out there. Put it all on DVD and we can trade or some shit.
Yeah, Cowboy! I was wondering what happened to those, too. Especially SFF. Whazzup BenRiner? Was listening to this CD in my car today. Makes me smile like I just did somethin' baaaaaaaaaaad. >:-)
I miss Stanley, I've lost touch with him over the years. He'd show up at my house in Toluca lake with a bag of fucked up (green) oranges, and ask if I was hungry. When ever we had parties there he would be sitting on the floor next to the trash can. He was an inspiration, and a good friend to me regardless of his act. A.P.B.
Hell, I was in Oklahoma City about two years after the Diamond Ballroom thing--they were a mastermind in the respect that they knew how to be different--live album, cut the audience out--love their songs, surprised they weren't bigger.

I met Stanley trying to crawl under a stall in the men's room of the Limelight in 93 (I think).
They kicked him out, no one knew who he was.
The autograph I got from him reads "Some Fuckin' Shit Ass kicked me out of the me bathroom - Stanley"
