she's correct -- switching is important in formal dining -- everyone needs Dinner Etiquette techniques -- you'll never know where you end up dining and this goes handy - esp when with really good company... It's really embarrassing to look too embarrass when intimidated by a very formal setting --- it won't hurt to learn bits about the proper ways --- you'll never know if you get invited to dine with a queen or something LOL

The "proper way" is dictated by the culture in which you were raised. As an American, I've been taught that this is the proper (or polite) way to eat. Yes, it is impractical and may seem barbaric to those who were taught to keep the fork in their left hand, but it's a cultural thing.

I think more people need to focus on chewing with their mouths closed and not reaching over another's plate than they do silverware etiquette.

Thank you for demonstrating the proper way to hold your knife and fork while slicing your food...I took an Argentinian lady out to dinner and she was utterly appalled by the way I held the fork while slicing my samosa...Needless to say!...She'll never have the opportunity to ball me out again In a public or any place for that matter...Good riddance!!!

@Assafro Why does it matter? I do eat the way you are talking about over in an European restaurant. However, that is because I eat left handed. So I have the fork in my left hand and my knife in my right. I don't understand why it matters though. Like why is it so revolting?

@asceventura First of all I am right handed and I was brought up to use the fork with my left hand and to always use your knife along with the fork. That is my culture, my background, it's called manners and people who don't have manners are revolting to me. Though I'm not saying the US way of eating is undecent. Just saying it could be offensive to some people if you just eat with a fork in your right hand in a decent European restaurant.

@Assafro okay, and personally. I think that is the dumbest thing ever. You must eat with the fork in your left hand and you must have the knife in the right hand. I'm not saying it's wrong but just my own personal views. Table manners over in the US isn't about how you must with each hand, and where each part of the hand must be placed on the fork in a certain spot. Table manners over here are much more lax. Such as no elbows on the table, don't reach across someone elses food. stuff like that.

Eat how the fuck you want, just be courteous to the people around you, well that and don't eat like a pig. But hand placements and which hand must do what. @asceventura European table manners are not more strict than US manners, they're just different from each other. Why would you personally think the European way is the dumbest? My point is, if you are from the US and you would ever travel and go to a European restaurant then consider to not just eat with a fork in your right hand as there is a risk that it could be revolting to other people. Same as when you would travel to Japan and have to eat with sticks and therefor to adapt to their manners

@asceventura And as for spaghetti, hardly anyone knows how to eat it properly haha. So you are totally free of how to eat it I guess :) Personally I eat it with a fork in my left hand, there are other people that use a spoon and fork in a way that they roll the spaghetti on the fork but I heard it is very un-Italian to do so.

The part that locks the table position broke and so every time we put our elbows on the table the entire table would tip and everything would slide off if you didn't pick up your elbows in time. WORKED LIKE A CHARM in teaching us to keep our elbows off the table!

My husband eats continental and I was embarrassed while eating at a nice restaurant with him. I felt that since he feeds himself the steak/meat with the prongs downward, that he was eating like a caveman.
