she's correct -- switching is important in formal dining -- everyone needs Dinner Etiquette techniques -- you'll never know where you end up dining and this goes handy - esp when with really good company... It's really embarrassing to look too embarrass when intimidated by a very formal setting --- it won't hurt to learn bits about the proper ways --- you'll never know if you get invited to dine with a queen or something LOL
The "proper way" is dictated by the culture in which you were raised. As an American, I've been taught that this is the proper (or polite) way to eat. Yes, it is impractical and may seem barbaric to those who were taught to keep the fork in their left hand, but it's a cultural thing.
I think more people need to focus on chewing with their mouths closed and not reaching over another's plate than they do silverware etiquette.
America has to make very thing so differcult. If the food is already on the fork and you're holding the fork just stick the food in your mouth. America you have the worst table manners of any developed country , Just ask any waiter outside of the States.
Thank you for demonstrating the proper way to hold your knife and fork while slicing your food...I took an Argentinian lady out to dinner and she was utterly appalled by the way I held the fork while slicing my samosa...Needless to say!...She'll never have the opportunity to ball me out again In a public or any place for that matter...Good riddance!!!
Never switch fork in a European restaurant! That would be ever so revolting! I didn't know it was a proper manner in the US. I will now be less annoyed when I see something like that on an American tv-show hehe
@Assafro Why does it matter? I do eat the way you are talking about over in an European restaurant. However, that is because I eat left handed. So I have the fork in my left hand and my knife in my right. I don't understand why it matters though. Like why is it so revolting?
@asceventura First of all I am right handed and I was brought up to use the fork with my left hand and to always use your knife along with the fork. That is my culture, my background, it's called manners and people who don't have manners are revolting to me. Though I'm not saying the US way of eating is undecent. Just saying it could be offensive to some people if you just eat with a fork in your right hand in a decent European restaurant.
@Assafro okay, and personally. I think that is the dumbest thing ever. You must eat with the fork in your left hand and you must have the knife in the right hand. I'm not saying it's wrong but just my own personal views. Table manners over in the US isn't about how you must with each hand, and where each part of the hand must be placed on the fork in a certain spot. Table manners over here are much more lax. Such as no elbows on the table, don't reach across someone elses food. stuff like that.
@Assafro Like I said, I'm not saying it's wrong that you guys have such strict table manners. It just makes zero sense to me because of the culture I was brought up in. Eat how the fuck you want, just be courteous to the people around you, well that and don't eat like a pig. But hand placements and which hand must do what. I mean HAVING to eat with the bottom of the fork facing upwards every single time? I do eat like that with things like chicken but what about spaghetti? How would that work?
@asceventura European table manners are not more strict than US manners, they're just different from each other. Why would you personally think the European way is the dumbest? My point is, if you are from the US and you would ever travel and go to a European restaurant then consider to not just eat with a fork in your right hand as there is a risk that it could be revolting to other people. Same as when you would travel to Japan and have to eat with sticks and therefor to adapt to their manners
@asceventura And as for spaghetti, hardly anyone knows how to eat it properly haha. So you are totally free of how to eat it I guess :) Personally I eat it with a fork in my left hand, there are other people that use a spoon and fork in a way that they roll the spaghetti on the fork but I heard it is very un-Italian to do so.
@Ferlito570 AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAhAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA THAT MADE ME LAUGH SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my gf parents are having a very elegant dinner party i have to learn manners so i do what i usually do when i have to learn something come to youtube after seeing this video i say fuck it ima eat my food the way i wanna eat it fuck manners and fuck that dinner partty
Get you're priorities straight! You're to stuck up, and rich to be greatfull you even have that food, or silverware. No, that's not good enough. You need to put your index finger in the right place, and use multiple forks, and spoons. This so called "proper" ettiquette, is highley unnecessary. We need to stick to more simple manners: Don't talk with your mouth full, don't reach across the table, etc. This is just pointless.
@fongwongchew AND YOU ARE FROM AUSTRIA !!! HAHAHAAHAHAHAHa YOUR PROBLEM IS you are poor. you will always be poor no matter how much money you make because you are poor.
The whole world has more than poor , old, you.
that said what even took you to this video in the first place?
secondly what ever I have i have worked for and your silly personal attack, however inacurate and speculative only points out your insecurities.
at least youve mastered "dont pick your nose and fart at the table"
There's nothing arrogant about proper table manners instructions. She knows her material . Its the world lack of sensibility and common sense that makes examples of classiness seem too out there.
This video is hilarious. If you are worried about how you are holding your fork and knife. You need to get your priorities in line. There are far more important things in life to worry about.
@JenkinsIVFDiaries My dad made a table where the table folded would convert into a bench. The part that locks the table position broke and so every time we put our elbows on the table the entire table would tip and everything would slide off if you didn't pick up your elbows in time. WORKED LIKE A CHARM in teaching us to keep our elbows off the table!
My husband eats continental and I was embarrassed while eating at a nice restaurant with him. I felt that since he feeds himself the steak/meat with the prongs downward, that he was eating like a caveman. I eat American style... luckily I'm lefty though so I do not make the switch in the middle.... which my husband was saying is too much of a hassle!! Thank you for your videos!! Now we both know that we were both right!! <3 Which way is more "proper" though?
American style my ar5e!!! It is the utter unability to use fork and knife properly. American haven;t got any table manners whatsoever! Monekys have better table manners than flipping yanks! What a pathetic video!
What do you expect from a women who heads the "etiquette center"? I mean, how pretentious is the place's name? A company that manages how people sit and dine?
We talk so much about civilization only failing to realize how pretentious, judgmental and repressive we've become.
"oh don't invite him for dinner, he can't eat properly!" WTF? Arrogant fucks.
Yeah I almost left my husband for not being proper/classy enough. I don't want to be dirty, dingy, and ghetto like the majority of the country, thank you.
At least this one is more comfortable than the continental style! The other way you have to hold the knife the entire time! and finish eating with your left!
what is better leaning like a hunch back towards your food, or leaning back in your chair with your back straight, and resting your arm(s) on the table?
well, you can eat with the hands other kind of stuff like crabs, salad, fishes, beef, aswell, pretty much everything! except soup, wich you need to take the plate and elevate it to your mouth, to inclinate it and sorb the liquid.
i know its more appropriate to not put elbows on the table, but some people think that doing so is table manners .. is that really true (and in what country does that) ? Cause frick i've been taught that not putting elbows on the table is more appropriate but hearing from "rich" families ... :s

I'm left-handed, and for this reason have always kept the work in my left hand even after cutting. I don't see how a left-handed person like me could switch the fork to their right hand??
Really.. you do not understand see the connection.. OK..it's simple.. since people in the USA COOK less people have lesser and lesser etiquette..and McD's is a quick way to show the people (world now) it a better way to eat with out worries.. if that not clear.. then you need to travel a light and eat (cook) with family ..
food is food...whether i use utensils or only my hands, it still goes to my belly
sigh......dinner etiquette was much easier during the stone age
