Umm no. The f-14 was aknowleged as a weak dog fighter. It was built purely for its speed over distance to carry the Phoenix missile. It was routinley ownwed bl those little a-4's. It was more of a Sniper than a gun fighter.
@cvire1971 *sigh* How do I keep getting roped into discussions of fighter jet capabilities for an anime music video. The absurdity of it all astounds me!
I concede. I don't know the first damn thing about fighter jets. All I know if that when you have fighters getting shot down by transforming mecha, realism kinda goes out the window...
I should've just snipped the argument right in the bud with "I HAVE MECHS, YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID". Oh well, at least I learned some things along the way.
@DanTheManCalter Yeah I fell in to. Sometimes you cant' help yourself. Have you seen the Macross Zero with Metallica in the background. totally bad ass
I would have to dis agree with you technology plays a huge role much more so than the training or skill of the pilot. EXP take a F-14 (not altered) vs a f-22. lets just say the f-22 pilot just knows how to fly the plane, use the radar and fire a missile or 4. Ok and lets say the tomcat pilot has gone thru training and has been in more dog fights than he can count on 2 hands his training and skill would mean nothing when the other pilot see's him and fires before the f-14 knows he is there.
Well, that's a given. But to really judge pilot skills, you'd have to put the pilots into a dogfight situation. Like in the video, pilot skill really comes into play when the planes are up-close. I would be willing to say that a veteran who has mastered the F-14 would have at least a fighting chance against an average pilot in an F-22 in a dogfight.
@thefirstapots1 I'd have to say I disagree, skill and understanding is the most important factor.A skilled pilot can understand how to use his aircraft to it's strengths and can think faster than a rookie pilot. The F22 VS F14 is a bit extreme, but I'd say Rookie in F22 VS Veteran in F14 the veteran would win,not to mention the F14 can use the ridiculously long ranged Phoenix missile to make up for it's lack of more modern technology. But the odds of a rookie being in a F22 are slim at best...
@Nitoku12 -"but I'd say Rookie in F22 VS Veteran in F14 the veteran would win"
EXTREEEEEEMELY unlikely.
Assuming for a moment the F-22 stays 100% EMCON and doesn't use its LPI AESA radar to locate the F-14 (which would be child's play, given the F-14's _HUGE_ RCS ), the moment the F-14 desperately tried to "ping" the skies with its radar to find the F-22, the F-22 would pick it up on its AN/ALR-94 and would cue an AMRAAM shot off the passive data alone. No radar required.
I'll respond to your points in the same way I've been responding for a while. GIANT ROBOTS. The video contains GIANT ROBOTS, that shoot down the fighting flying-doohickeys with little effort. Realism is the moot point here.
To interject on the argument in the uploaded comments, pilot skill would also have huge impact on the out come of any dogfight.
A veteren pilot in an F-14 is always going to have the edge over a lesser skilled pilot in a MIG 29, even though the MIG is more maneuverable.
As I have said when ever the subject of what plane would be what has come up, the characteristics and the technology of the plane counts for only so much. The quality of the pilot decides everything.

Do you like fantasy like this? F-14 is cow in the sky. It is not overmaneuver MiG-29. In real air fight F-14 would suck, because it was created to intercept russian bombers with missiles - and nothing more.
... This is a cartoon. This is a cartoon where a dogfight was ended with one of the jets turning into a humanoid robot. Another similar aircraft employed not only the transformation technology, but missile-intercepting head lasers.
These fighters (VF-1's) would later go up against bipedal robot pods piloted by 50 foot tall human-like aliens while in outer space.
I honestly couldn't care less about what the F-14 can do. The scene was entertaining, regardless of realism.
@AG658 besides, it's stated in-series that this is a modified F-14, with new engines, etc., so its not unreasonableto assume it's better than "real" F-14s, or didn't you notice the thrust vectoring, besides which, this is a FICTITIOUS STORY
@AG658 By all indications, the F-14 in Iranian service was devastating against the Iraqi air force. Iraqis were noticeably quicker to run against US F14s than any other coalition aircraft during the first Gulf War. With the right tactics and training, it could do well. Also worth noting is the F-4, also designed as an interceptor, had a very favorable kill ratio against more maneuverable MiGs during vietnam.
@ctraver That's great, but what does that have to do with Macross? I think it's safe to say that an F-14 doesn't hold a candle to a VF-1. An F-14 doesn't turn into a giant robot and fight aliens, after all...

-"not to mention the F14 can use the ridiculously long ranged Phoenix missile"
1. The Phoenix is a bomber intercept missile. It was never designed to intercept agile, high-speed targets.
2. The F-22's RCS being in the -40dB range, what would the Phoenix lock on to? ;)
-"But the odds of a rookie being in a F22 are slim at best."
That's pretty much a moot point.
