Both Senna and Schumacher were two of the greats. While they may have pushed it a little too far at key moments, I believe a good bit of controversy creates a great championship decider.
Just to clear up this Senna v Prost in Suzuka thing. The head of the FIA was French, as was/is Prost. Senna got pole but was very annoyed that it meant he had to start on the dirty/slower side of the track. He said if the grid sides weren't changed for the race, and Prost was on the outside, he would not yield. This is a little different from the numerous attempts both successful and not so successful of Michael Schumacher throughout his GP career. BUT, it was certainly unsportsmanlike of Senna
I dont know why people are comparing the actions of Senna in 1990 and Schumacher in 1994 in the way that they are. They both took their title rival out of the race to ensure that they won the title. Same with Prost in 89, except he couldnt take it when Senna did it back to him. Call them cheaters if you like, but its more the fact that they are clever and legendary, because lets face it, if they hadnt done it, it wouldnt have been anywhere near as classic, intresting or as memorable.
i hope everyone knows why Senna took out Prost in '90, because of the side of pole position being switched. Senna made it clear that if he wasn't first into the first corner then he'd take Prost out. Prost 'The Professor' should have known Senna would be true to his word, especially after what happened in '89, and should have let Senna dive in first and then ducked back to try and get him in the next corner. Probably not fair, but that doesn't change that Senna won the championship.
Senna actually isnt a dirty driver or a cheat watching this. Prost ran into him the year before, and he was getting revenge a year later, so all fair really
You sound like someone who doesn't know anything about F1 in the 80'. Senna was famous for drivingothers of the road. Senna and Schumacher are the same 'cheaters'.
@MultiBikram i said watching this, meaning i did not watch f1 in the '80's cause i wasn't even born then. all the footage i have seen of senna has been that of his talent in driving. i haven't seen anything where he takes any one off, except prost. I'd say schumacher was a good driver, giving him the car. but as senna proved at lotus, he was good in any car. it all sounds like how i would describe the hamilton/alonso debates in say 30 years time to young people
ya I clearly remember that bone headed when Shuemacher TRIED to take out Jacques Villeneuve. He stood on his car to see if he'd win the championship but Villeneuve nursed his car to the finish.I've ALWAYS detested M.S. because he was a reckless driver whenver someone tried to pass him...
Senna was a great driver and period. The old days f1 regulations were so flexible that could allow almost everything: dangerous driving moves, some of them with very bad intensions, fist fighting and so on. All may sound reasonable when racing but up to a certain extent. What Senna did in suzuka could probably have caused severe injuries at such a high speed (140 mph). NO ONE seemed to bothered..... and Senna won his 3rd title. Under today's f1 regulations,Senna would be kicked out for good
The difference between Senna and Schumacher was, Senna admitted to his deliberate actions in 1990, whereas Schumacher didn't in 94 or 97. Also, Senna was faster, his poles to starts ratio compared to Schumaher's proves that.
plus, unlike shumi, he admitted it. shumi never admitted 1994 NOR 1997. senna came out and admitted that he took at prost because HE felt prost took HIM out in 1989
interesting how, every time when senna clearly made a mistake or did some quite unfair, how you people always defend him, while for you schumacher is always the great cheater. you are not objective... senna was as much of a "cheater" as michael (both great racers, sometimes going a bit too far)... the fact that senna died does not mean that no criticism is allowed, please remember that.
that's what you say beacuase it's senna ;) if it was for example schumacher, you would be more critical. i don't want to defend schumacher for his actions i just find it quite unfair, that everyone treats senna different because he's dead. there were so many incidents when senna went way too far, it was not only suzuka. and i don't condemn anyone for driving and fighting hard, cause that's what i love to see. but i don't like people to treat senna, as if he never did anything wrong
Senna did do some ver questionable things but, he never did anything as stupid and unsporting as Schumacher in Monaco 2006. Although I reguard Senna as the best driver ever, I'm actually a Mansell fan. Mansell was always so exciting to watch, he was nearly 3 times world champion and when he moved to Indy he was smashing lap records in his first practice sessions!! If Schumacher joined F1 10 years earlier I'd doubt he would have anything near 7 tittles cos after 1995 he was the only great driver
bravo brilliant comment @christianBVB09... When you like a driver you say his dangerous moves are "competitive and brave" if you hate a driver he's a cheater.
Senna never went as far as Schumacher. That's why people "defend" him. People always bring up Suzuka 1990 to attack Senna, but just watch the replay. Senna goes into the corner and is clearly turning right as much as he can and he's even on the curb. Prost turns to the inside and crashes into him. Senna took a risk and went for it because there was a gap, but what the hell do you call Prost blocking and crashing into Senna in 1989 at the chicane? That was even worse. Why do people forget that?
mate, im afraid yr wrong on this one. Senna never intended on making that corner - he was going way too fast and was deliberately trying to taking Prost out. It's a corner that requires braking/lift off the throttle. According to the journalists trackside there was no change in Senna's engine note!! the nail in the coffin though is that Senna admitted a couple of years later that he was trying to take Prost out...
No, he never admitted to trying to take out Prost. He only said that he would go for the corner regardless and that's what he did. If he was purely trying to crash into Prost he would've went straight into him but he didn't. And watch the video closely. The car does slow down. He goes for the inside and is right along the curb, just starts to lift/brake with Prost and is crashed into as Prost turns in. Senna knew Prost could hit him and that's what happened. He let Prost make the call.
No, what he said in 1991 was that he went for the gap regardless of the situation. He said he wasn't prepared to let Prost go through first so he went for the gap and Prost crashed into him. He never admitted to directly aiming to push Prost off the track.
"So I said to myself, 'OK, whatever happens, I'm going to get into the first corner first — I'm not prepared to let the guy turn into that corner before me. If I'm near enough to him, he can't turn in front of me — he just has to let me through.' I didn't care if we crashed; I went for it. And he took a chance, turned in, and we crashed."
That's what he said in 91. He admitted to going for it, that's all. Never once did he admit he was trying to crash into Prost. He was going for the corner.
@christianBVB09 schumacher cheat with benetton was that they didn' use safety fiters, which realise less fuel, but they are safer, one f1 driver, schumi's colleague at that time could have been killed. and that's only one example. i'm not saying that schumi isn't a good driver, you have to do some thing to get to the top...but senna didn't cheated, he was rough! there is a big difference.
@thestoryteller612 No, his "cheat" was that he had already won too many races too early in the season. So by punishing him, Hill got the chance to catch up and prevent the '94 championship from being boring and already decided by midseason.
I know this comment is over a year old, but I just want to say that I couldn't agree with you more!! :)
In my opinion, both are / were epic drivers and world champions because, along with being extremely talented, they had a ruthless side which made them wanting to win at all costs.
@christianBVB09 Yeah...Senna drove into Prost deliberately after Prost took him out the year before, deciding that he wouldn't let Senna do him at Suzuka like he did him the year before... and French FISA president Jean-Marie Balestre ensured he couldn't race for the title in the next race... big difference between someone settling a score and someone just taking out a faster car in the hope of knocking them out of the title
@christianBVB09 I agree with this completely, but I would say that while Senna taking out Prost at Suzuka in 1990 was blatantly on purpose, I also think that Prost taking out Senna the year before was just as blatantly on purpose.
Senna quite rightly would have wanted revenge on Prost and so he got it - I think though looking at his reaction after it he didn't seem to be pleased about what he had done, he almost looked a bit ashamed. He preferred to win fairly.
90 - The drivers agreed that the driver on pole position would start on the outside (clean side) of the track before qualifying. Senna gets pole as usual and then finds himself on the dirty side of the track on pole at the start of the race. He tried to get it changed before the race started but the stewards wouldn't do it. He then makes a deal with himself to go flat into the first corner, and get there first, if anyone is in his way - tough!
89 - Prost suckered Senna into making the ambitious pass and then promptly closed the door into the hairpin eliminating both of them. Senna did get going again, passed Nanini in the Benetton for the lead and won the race and Title - the stewards then took it off him afterwards gifting the Title to Prost.
the senna and prost incident was one of those incidents. senns was impatient, prost tried to cut him off and get a bit of an advantage, but senna was too quick and those both went off
retrospect as much as people want to protest to Schumacher being dirty and as right as they are, I'm now encouraged by this video to find out if maybe Prost was even dirtier
I think you can add now the 07 and 08 last races into this compilation. Unvelievable competition without "dirty racing" like in Senna v Prost and Schumacher cases.

The decition to start pole from the inside, was a decition made before qualifying, during training. Both Senna and Prost protested!!
Senna and Prost do not take part in those decitions, like the other drivers (although protests can be made)
What Senna did, can not be excused.
Prost was in front, and had the right to the line - like in Suzuka 1989.
This was just insane, and a Senna vandetta.
