I agree that there is air in the neck of the syringe because it is being held too low and surely the squirrel is sucking air for part of the time.
Also I agree with Ashlanas comment that you should feed any young animal on it's belly rather than upright like that, as it lessens the risk of flooding and causing aspiration pneumonia.
@murfitttheman Don't listen to this person you CAN raise squirrels on your own my friend has done it serveral times. Get puppy formula and whipping cream (NOT WHIPPED CREAM) and mix them together and feed them with a syringe.
I'm afraid I have two little ones in one of my bird house's and it looks like Mom might not be coming home. What do I feed it? These are really young. Just barley visible signs of fur starting. HELP
I love how they almost always doze off before they're done eating. They're so easy to feed at that age. It's like the calm before the storm though, because when those eyes open, they immediately go spastic, haha. Not many critters have a way a digging their claws into you like a young squirrel! Aww, I miss rehabbing.
Is that is a rabbit nipple?? They make shorter ones like moms specifically for squirrels. Also, never feed the baby vertically...always should be laying on its belly. We also use 1cc 's for little ones like this. They tend to suck in the formula too quick and aspirate.
well I don't know if he bite the little rabbit . I only saw him with both paws around the rabbit and then he looked up at me with a "I'm in trouble face". He ran leave the little bunny still screaming not know what was going on. It stopped crying when I picked it up to see in it was hurt.
I actually had saved a baby rabbit from my cat one night, but it only survived for three days. The cat had gave the little guy internal bleeding and we didn't know about it until it was too late. I didn't hold the guy because he was afraid of me and probably screamed it's head off.
I bet. Baby rabbits can actually die of fear! If it had the eyes closed, it wouldn't have made it anyways. If his eyes were open and the cat injured it, the bacteria on the cat's teeth will kill it too.
That depends on the age of the squirrel. As long as the eyes are still closed, it's ok to a certain extent, as long as it doesn't deprive the baby of it's much needed sleep, which is nearly 24/7 at that stage.
If you have only one squirrel and it's already climbing around, it'll get lonely, so it's ok too for a while.
If you have more than 1 squirrel and they are older, they are not going to let you cuddle much anymore.
If you had asked me that about wild rabbits, I'd say NO handling!
do you have to give him esbilac 'cause I have found a baby squirrel about 2 weeks ago and i have found a page that said that esbilac was not good for baby squirrels and it said tha you should use scalded whole milk with some drops of vitamin e and about 2 days ago my baby squirrel died I dont Know if it was because of that milk or because I over fed him or because the huge fall of the tree where he was when I found him but I would like to know anyways what is the best formula I can (part 1)
I think I know where you got it from and it's bad information. Scalded milk is NOT good. I'm sorry you lost your baby to it. They just can't handle cow's milk.
That's why it is so important that people do NOT try to raise wildlife themselves with information they find online but find a licensed rehabber to bring the babies to.
I'm using Esbilac for 10 years raising squirrels now and it works just fine.
You have to check with your State's Parks and Wildlife Department, sometimes they are called Fish and Wildlife and in some States it's the Department of Natural Resources and/or Health Department...each State handles it differently.
hey where did u shop and get that?cuz i found a baby squirrel but it wont eat, ibarely has teeth and im really worried because it hasnt eaten in like 3 days, barely sipped some milk i gave it,cant let it free because its been storming, can u plz respond?i will really appreciate it.
This is why it is illegal for people to have squirrels without a permit. Please find a wildlife rehabilitator that knows what they are doing..for the animal's sake. But every baby is probably beyond help after 3 days without food.
Yes, it is illegal and cost you hundreds of dollars, even thousands if you have multiple squirrels without a State permit. There are a couple of States like Florida where it not illegal though. You have to go look at your Parks and Wildlife laws for the State you live in.
I had to pay 155 dollars fine cuz some idiot thought it was wrong for me to have a baby squirrel without a permit and called the law. Should have let it die, I guess. Now I have a permit :).

@ashlanas What's a rabbit nipple? I never feed rabbits with nipples. These nipples are made especially for squirrels to prevent aspirating.

Aw! Poor little squirrel. His mother died on him. Thank god that the little baby squirrel is OK and not dead.

make sure to push all the air out of the feeding tube so that their little tummy does not fill up with gas

In you experience, is it ok for you hold a baby squirrel beside to just feed it or wash it, just to let it know that it "mommy" is around?
