My old cat Dizzy, RIP, single handedly practically tore my couch to shreds. He'd really go to town when I wasn't home. He had several scratching posts so I don't know why the couch was "extra special" to him. I sprayed it with herbal stuff which was supposed to stop this behavior & covered it with plastic whiie not in use but he always managed to circumvent these things.

It has nothing to do with sharpening their claws. It is to stretch and exercise the little muscles that control the claws as well as the large muscles of front legs and back. It is basicaly pilates for cats...

The reasom why cats scratch the couch, because there sharping there claws and make them fell alot better just running around on a hard floor.
That's why they scratch just to keep there claws nice and sharp.
