These two revolutionary things in swimming happened after this meet. Goggles were just starting to be used in practice and then in meets. In the 50 freestyle the grab start was first used in a NCAA. Meet. Check that video also. Spitz swam the 50 also. In the Prelims he did a wind up start and in the finals a grab start. Filming this I never thought that fact would be proven by this. Jt
Worked with many butterflyers. Mark spitz did have the stroke to beat. Making the Jo long course time 13 & 14 is great. So many factors to work on, so much different than the short course. Flexibility and kick were marks ace he played with. Good luck check out the other films from that meet on jaged48. Good luck
Many thanks for posting this video. I'm the swimmer in Lane 5 - Rob Clarke from UCLA - bottom of the screen in the blue suit. Rob Dickson from Southern Illinois was in Lane 3. Dickson and Spitz went out real fast....I was dead last at the 100 yrd. mark....then finished 2nd. This race was also shown on ABC's Wide World of Sports with a replay of the finish. I've tried to find out how I can get a copy, but ot no avail. Anyway, it's fantastic that you posted this - Thank You !!!
@pocketcharts12 Glad you took a look at this. Have more from that meet that i will post in a couple of days. Take a look at the video i did on the 50 that year. It was the first race where i saw a grab start. in the prelims dave edgar and John Trembley both did grab starts. Mark Spitz swam the 50 also, in the prelim did a wind up start but in the finals he did a grab start. I will post Gary Hall Sr. race in the 200 IM. John

Arm swing start, no goggles, and Spitz still goes a 1.50!

This was done with a super 8 film camera so couldn't get the entire race. The time reflects the fact it was a 200.

that was not a 200.

This is the year I swam in college------ lane 2 looks like he was leaning---
and no goggles--- how cool!
and the stroke has changed---this is old school fly---nice but not
as fast as the flyers these days--- diving blocks are straight--
flat racing dives---I can go on and on----
Luv this video---
