Addiction comes in so many forms. And each kind of addiction has its different effects. Drug addiction might not cause the same as a sex addiction. Thats why I love this album it could easily describe any addiction and its effects.

Damn... the timing of Maynard is so... odd... It's really good but also so hard to sing along with. He doesn't start at the 1 or something alike, but rather at the 5/8 or 7/8 of the line before...
It doesnt matter what the meaning is meant to be, music is all about making your own meanings and connections, so dont get all butthurt when someone puts their own spin on songs, yes most of the songs are about dug addiction to the musicians, but everyone can interrept something different.

@973mirror If you actually listened to Maynard and Billy's interview about this album, you'll find that EVERY song on this album has to do with drugs in some form or another. From the addicts perspective (w&p/package) to rehab (nurse) to family members actions (blue/outsider) to the drugs temselves (pet) to addicts who got clean (gravity) but refuse to believe they messed up cause they're clean (noose) it is called 13th step for a reason. They both lost friends to drugs so they made this album.

You can take away anything you want from a song that's the beauty of it. However I highly doubt that is what Maynard was thinking about when he wrote this lyrics. I'm aware of third eye visions and self awareness. It's just not here. IMO.
@MastodonManiac It's not just what I've learned from tool. And I apply it everywhere. I guess Maynard resonates with me and that's why I enjoy his music so much. I believe his music arises out of a very enlightened space and it doesn't matter what the concepts are about in the song deep down I still sense that. But unless these people have sat down with maynard and discussed the lyrics I think nobody can predict what he was actually thinking about at the time, if he was in fact thinking. :)

The other night, I heard this song with different ears. What it felt like, without focusing on one thing or the other, was an exorcism of your self. I was feeling weak at the moment, and I literally felt the weakness and the sadness empty from my buddy like a million little sparks coming out of every pore of my body.

Such a tranquil song and Maynard's voice is like an angel, truly shows that he is one of the greatest vocalists of this time with such a great range of his vocals, he knows how to sing.
Without metaphore, it seems to me the song is about him finding interest in a girl who stands out to him in a crowd. But he is wanting her soley for her differences (she could be psycho or a mental case) because he himself feels different too. As if he finally met his match but doesn't know what to do with it.
Anything can be a matepahore. So it could be a drug, a drink, or something about himself he is singing about. Who knows. That's what is so great about it, his music makes you think..

I got locked up for a little bit. I recall getting out and having nothing left. No job, car, money..... girl was gone. I listened to this song over and over. Sippin on whiskey and balling everytime he says, "what am I to do with all this silence". There are several interpretations that are derrivatives of what the meaning of this is. Perhaps its just one's own entity that's driven into the depth of darkness. Lose the enablers and empower yourself.

Joking aside, my own answer to "what am I to do with all this silence" is experience it, enjoy it, take time to reflect and compose myself. Silence, in any sense, is so rare that it's worth appreciating should you have the chance.

This song reminds me distinctly of an old friend (girl, but not girlfriend) who is disablingly shy but still has an awesome personality. She had a huge effect on me, someone else's girl but still a good friend. I would get so frustrated trying to get her to express her feelings if anything just so that I could respect them. I did find methods eventually. There came a time the best thing I could do for her was send her on her way. I haven't seen her since and I doubt I ever will. DC
To me this song is about a distant love that you desire, but you know that she is tearing you up, in spite of this you continue to waste your time working up the courage to approach her, until finally you decide that the fear is worthless and you go for it.
I'm not saying that's what the song is about, I'm saying that's what it is about in my perspective.

All the lyrics candidly portray all the anxiety, nerviousness, and shyness that comes with being overwhelmed by that someone. And within that moment they inspire you to overcome your fear. Only for it is too late, the internal battle raged too long and when you finally got the courage he/she has walked out.
I read somewhere a while ago that Maynard said this song is about a self destructive person who comes into your life. Kinds makes sense if you really listen to the lyrics.

@kiwikieran18 No I mean you're taking what you learn from Tool and applying it here. APC and this album in specific is about drugs. You can take away anything you want from a song that's the beauty of it. However I highly doubt that is what Maynard was thinking about when he wrote this lyrics. I'm aware of third eye visions and self awareness. It's just not here. IMO.

@MastodonManiac It's not just what I've learned from tool. And I apply it everywhere. I guess Maynard resonates with me and that's why I enjoy his music so much. I believe his music arises out of a very enlightened space and it doesn't matter what the concepts are about in the song deep down I still sense that. But unless these people have sat down with maynard and discussed the lyrics I think nobody can predict what he was actually thinking about at the time, if he was in fact thinking. :)

@MastodonManiac It kills me when people say this album is about drugs. Drugs is in itself a cryptic word. Fear is a drug, Control is a drug, Love is a drug. So yes, I'm sure Maynard suggested this album is about drugs.
I don't under how people take such an expressive word as a literal meaning. Especially coming from Maynard.

Without metaphore, it seems to me the song is about him finding interest in a girl who stands out to him in a crowd. But he is wanting her soley for her differences (she could be psycho or a mental case) because he himself feels different too. As if he finally met his match but doesn't know what to do with it.
Anything can be a matepahore. So it could be a drug, a drink, or something about himself he is singing about. Who knows. That's what is so great about it, his music makes you think..

I got locked up for a little bit. I recall getting out and having nothing left. No job, car, money..... girl was gone. I listened to this song over and over. Sippin on whiskey and balling everytime he says, "what am I to do with all this silence". There are several interpretations that are derrivatives of what the meaning of this is. Perhaps its just one's own entity that's driven into the depth of darkness. Lose the enablers and empower yourself.

Joking aside, my own answer to "what am I to do with all this silence" is experience it, enjoy it, take time to reflect and compose myself. Silence, in any sense, is so rare that it's worth appreciating should you have the chance.

This song reminds me distinctly of an old friend (girl, but not girlfriend) who is disablingly shy but still has an awesome personality. She had a huge effect on me, someone else's girl but still a good friend. I would get so frustrated trying to get her to express her feelings if anything just so that I could respect them. I did find methods eventually. There came a time the best thing I could do for her was send her on her way. I haven't seen her since and I doubt I ever will. DC

To me this song is about a distant love that you desire, but you know that she is tearing you up, in spite of this you continue to waste your time working up the courage to approach her, until finally you decide that the fear is worthless and you go for it.
I'm not saying that's what the song is about, I'm saying that's what it is about in my perspective.

All the lyrics candidly portray all the anxiety, nerviousness, and shyness that comes with being overwhelmed by that someone. And within that moment they inspire you to overcome your fear. Only for it is too late, the internal battle raged too long and when you finally got the courage he/she has walked out.
