As of the 4pm newscast today (10.26.10), KYW has switched to the far superior New Generation 2 cuts of Enforcer. The opens are a little wonky because they were designed with NG1 in mind, but still... extreme improvement.
KDKA in Pittsburgh just rolled out the package in the past 3 weeks, and I have to say the opens/music are definitely a better version than what KYW ended up with. The big thing with theirs is all of their opens are different, and in some cases, multiple openings used for the same shows on different days.
Since we're all making a fuss about the typeface...
Arial isn't that big of a deal. Would I prefer another font? Yeah, probably. Does it work with the overall simple and clean design of this look? Yeah.
Frankly, I'm more concerned with the lack of care the station has applied this look with, and the continued use of their tired and lethargic sounding music, than the font they're using on their graphics.
@HulkieG Oh yeah, the music sucks too. How they can use anything that forgettable and, as you said, tired-sounding with a straight face is a mystery to me.
@HulkieG Yet they got rid of the morning cut of their 2007 theme on the "EWN This Morning" weekday newscast, but not the weekend morning newscxast, which is the best cut out of their "tired, dull" theme.
@videonut33 Yeah I don't get why they did that. Especially considering that they're using a considerably wider variety of musical cuts on 57, including bumpers from News In Focus!
Here in Detroit, WWJ-TV also got the new graphics, but these are used for weather reports and the Detroit Free Press-produced morning show. I'm pretty shocked to say of why they (CBS Corporation) actually gave out a new graphics package to a station that has no news department.
@bigvoice313 My guess? CBS is probably designing this package and giving it to the O&Os for minimal (if any) cost. For WWJ, it was probably a matter of picking up a professional looking package that already had the elements in place with little customization needed.
KCNC ,WBZ,WCCO are the reaming independent themes channels and 2 of the 3 have their own graphics. CBS other wise ruined their other stations with the cheap cookie cutter music and cheap graphics. GOOD thing I get KCNC. and now the websites are being ruined too. Like NBC's junky sites.
@mychiller I actually would have rather seen KCNC switch to the Enforcer if they have to use the O&O graphics. After using the same cut of Newstime for seven years, it's time for a change.
Open-wise, the shots of Philadelphia are a strength (very crucial, the opens play up the backgrounds), but the music doesn't fit. Graphics-wise, meh, more cookie-cutter stuff.
I can understand the spartan approach, but could they at least have taken more care than slapping gloss and Arial on everything? And using colors other than navy blue?
Also, CBS seems to be going for an NBC-like approach with websites; look at the new sites for WCBS and KCBS.
Good part., they kept Paul Turner (Tie in w/ Al Vanik, as the best V/O that 3's ever got in '97 at the start of the "EWN Renaissance") at the V/O and the theme from 2007.
Bad part: they traded Myriad Pro for--(shudders)--Arial for the L3s.
I first thought when the O&O graphics was coming to KYW, my first thoughts were are they were going to drop the 'Eyewitness News' name for the second time, I'm glad its not the case. I'm sad that they aren't using the NG2 cues their sister station from the Northeast are using. I'm not liking that bug because it looks dull with that gray, I wished it was a solid white or polished silver color. I hope KYW do some minor tweaking soon.
@csworldwide101 I hope so on the tweaking part. Like having different shots for their "This Morning", 4p, 6p (6:30p on Sunday) and 11p opens!!!!
AND ANOTHER DESERVED TWEAK: GET RID OF FREAKIN' ARIAL!!!!!.
3's other programs, "TalkPhilly" and "xfinity Sunday Kickoff" have Myriad (which is Apple Inc.'s font) on their L3s since 2007/08/09, WHY CAN'T THEY ADAPT MYRIAD PRO TO THE NEW O&O L3s?!? >:-(
@csworldwide101 They're not dropping the Eyewitness News name. In fact, the format celebrated its 45th anniversary, and KYW has been airing tons of promos celebrating it and labeling their EWN as "America's first Eyewitness News".
I think the station realizes that they messed up when they dropped Eyewitness News and isn't going to make that mistake again.
WBZ in Boston switched to a package very similar to this yesterday.

I love the new logo and the new theme for Eyewitness News which also used for CBS 2 News

I like the background behind the anchors of the city buildings, almost reminds me of the one WCAU used back in the 80s during their CBS days.

@HulkieG NiF! The best theme that 3's EVER gotten since (no offense) the 1991-97 KYW sig theme! (Wish 3 can use NiF again with the new GFX!)

@csworldwide101
The ONLY station that should have Arial in the first place on their L3s is the flagship station, WCBS.

Pretty yawn to me. Only thing noticeable is that Erica moved from WFOR to KYW.

They should have kept music under the "Top Stories"...kinda an awkward ending to the open...
