LOL, most Americans make their political preferences such a pride issue, not realizing that no matter who is elected it's all the same political BS regardless of party. It's as if they actually believe one is righteous and the other is not. :)

@vwmodrock How people consider a president to be 'the boss' is beyond me too. We have a prime minister, just a guy who lives in a normal house and get's treated like shite for his total bollocks job at governing a country. The guy who waxes my truck is more worthy of high esteem and more important to me...at least he does something for me and charges fairly for his work. :D President/Boss, they are all knobs and crooks, it's just that some of us realize it others praise them as tyhhey do Gods.

I was there and remember Jethro Tull on one leg and Hendrix. Third degree burns from the sun, making love in the open air and no one cared. Didn't see any fights or trouble. I guess we were all too stoned and full of free love. Got lost in Winchester driving back to London and a nice very posh lady put us right little did she know how NAUGHTY we all were. One of my mates met a girl and never came back to the mainland again! Simple pleasures in very happy times.
I was 17 my cousin 16, big family arguments about us going but we went anyway, so glad we did the memories will live forever. No mobiles or cash machines then, we took 2 rolled up blankets and a little food, our tickets and some cash. It was so hot we burnt. Remember the God tent and security telling us to be careful cause someone had been stabbed, never found out if that was true or not. Everyone remembers Tiny Tim!!! It WAS the BEST time EVER
@niceonemicky, ..hiya Scouse?....I do remember the wash area, nobody cared really, we did what we had to do. You can see a silvery round and large tent behind the stage, I ended up sleeping in there with about 3hundred other people. Somehow I lost my sleeping bag, so had to buy a large paper sleeping bag, but quite comfortable too, so no problem. I remember too the Sunday a church group turned up to bless multitude. I remember too the bloke who stripped off inside the Arena...who cares eh?
HI you was definitly There, GOD I LOVE THIS VIDEO I WORKED FOR FIERY CREATIONS, Remember the Slogan HELP SINK THE ISLE OF WIGHT, it nearly came true, British Rail Feried more than 3 quarters of a million people more than they usually did at that time of the year. my estimate 800 000. Scouse Micky. SANDOWN.
jed2781 thanks for this you have done a great service I am 68 now and this brings it all back to me as I worked at this festival, LOVE THE MUSIC You Use.
LETS GET FUCKING REAL THIS WAS BIGGER THAN WOODSTOCK I WORKED AT THE THREE FESTIVALS ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT AND THIS WAS FUCKING ENORMOUS Its all down to TAX EVASION AND DECLARING BANKRUPTCY ON STAGE, BRITISH RAIL ESTIMATE they ferried over 3 quaters of a million people more than usual, there was private flights and private ferrying. if you got on that fucking hill you saw twice maybe 3 times woodstock, FUCK YOU YANKS ALWAYS BIGGER>
@niceonemicky They (Yanks) truly believe it! Much like Nazi Propaganda, they are bred and raised to believe they are the biggest and best, otherwise the reality might scare them all off. It pains me to go to the States now, but every now and then it has to be done. I agree, Woodstock paled in the shadow of the IOW fest but as always, the propaganda machine focuses on Woodstock, most Americans have never even heard of IOW anyway and you are much better off because of it.
@ozmedia Hi osmedia I watched a BBC documentary tonight (29-08-2011)about 9/11 and all about the so called conspiracy about what transpired that momentously sad day for all those poor victims and their families, Despite all the proof amassed showing it to be a straight forward terrorist attack these idiots are erecting smoking mirrors everywhere to back up thier rediculous theories that it was the American Government that did it all.
The Americans ALWAYS BIGGER even in CONSPIRACY , Ha Ha.

I worked at a PO and my boss kept asking me to get my big afro hair cut. He knew I love pop music so when I disappeared for a week, he guessed I could be at the IoW pop fes. When I returned after a week of 'sickness', he wouldn't believe a word I said to him. But we got on fine after that. I remember bathing on a beach nearby completely in the nude with thousands of other people, great music, great crowd and lovely memories to keep me happy forever !!
@macvatu I remeber that you all went nude and in Portsmouth and Southhampton And Lymington the enterprising boat owners were doing priced excurion trips to the bay saying COME AND SEE THE NUDISTS.
Do you remember the wash places all the girls stripped of from the waist up to wash I was in charge of the toilets but abandoned them to go on the HILL , God the Weather was Perfect..Scouse MICKY
Second set of town scenes definitely Yarmouth. Note all the masts etc. One of the places to arrive/leave though not as important as Ryde. It still looks much the same, though instead of having the only set of traffic lights on the Island now we are swamped with the bloody things.
Think that the town scenes must be Freshwater, I will have to ask one of my friends who live on that side of the Island to check me out on this. I loved the shot of the Southern Vectis bus though, might have ben on it myself. Ah sweet days!
I was just 16. Had ticket, got my sleeping bagand and told my mother I was going. Dont think she took me seriously. Hitched lifts, dont have a clue how I got to site from ferry port. No tent, hot sun, very burnt. Remember Tiny Tim more than any other act, really took control of crowd. Also that loos were very basic and being very ill prepared regarding food & drink. My mother asked be where I had been for last 5 days!. Maybe too young, but good to be a free spirit...lol

@alex24593yt I was 17, my folks knew where i was going. I'd been there the year before. Tiny Tim was a trip. all the 5 days were my own trip. I love watching this, it was a different world and you and I were part of it. Be well.
Work like a slave, I remember one of our conductors, John you know who you are, passed out through greed. Made a mint of money but have always wished I had been there. Still I did hear the sounds from over the fence.
Wow, Thanks for the posting - where did this come from ? A past blast. Did anyone actually pay to get in? The spot lights that were shined up on that hill -at night - we thought - how kind of them!? The nearest pub did well out of it all - before they ran out. Hawkwind played in a tent on the Friday night - before they became big.
A very valuable archive film setting the scene for the event. And well taken; a good steady hand in charge of the camera. It brought back so many memories that were buried away in this old brain. We opened the festival on the Friday -- most of that experience now a faded blur... Peter Daltrey / Fairfield Parlour.
Nearly froze to death waiting for Jimi, was buying hot dogs just to keep warm. Being young and stupid I just turned up in a T shirt. Beautiful memories. Got smacked up by two hell's angels so not much peace and love for me!! Jimi was great though sad to say he died just three weeks later.. What times they were....
I only just found this... wonderful wonderful memories of wonderful times and music. 5 days of heaven.. we even stopped on to help to try and clear up the place after. Just love the way you've presented this JED2781.. you've really given some of us 600,000 that were there some terrific memories. Thank you for taking the time not only to do it in the first place, but to put it on here. Peace V
Whay a joy to see this and re-live all the memories of that hot and rather smelly weekend! My abiding memories that will stay with me forwever are Free, Hendrix, The Who ... and the trenches that served as the girls' toilet! And the poor girl perched next to me whose purse dropped down into the mire as she was concentrating on other things!! Fantastic bit of film.
Great video and good memories. I was 18 at the time. For more veteran recollection on this last great event, come and visit us at the "1970 Isle Of Wight Festival Forum"
The film is wonderful and captures the atmosphere with a very good photographic eye and camera shot technique. Wel done!. I can't help but list my best musical memories of Hendrix, Doors, Who, Miles Davis, Sly and the Family Stone, Joni Mitchell, ELP, Moody Blues, John Sebastian, Ritchie Havens, and too many more. I taped Doors and Hendrix. I really experienced a peak in my life, in more ways than one! A truly unforgettable weekend in tine and space. People were wonderful and sharing.
This event was the best of it's kind. The collection of world-class acts was astounding, one following another at all hours of the day and night. It changed my life. I was very high and blown away by the whole event was so powerful. It still feels like yesterday and at times I find the Hendrix performance particularly moving. Do you remember his opening with "God Save the Queen" followed by "Sergeant Pepper"- indelible memory! Who needs sleep on weekends like that?
I was there, it was amazing, this is so nostalgic. I`n Jed as well, well done Jed,have just downloaded Mona by QMS, anybody got any film of Richie Havens doing Here comes the Sun ?
oh yeh...i've been staring and staring at 3.00...there's a couple walking along and i'm convinced it's me and my girlfriend who later became my wife. i was 20 then...i'm now 60!
wow, wish i were there. watched this with my dad who went, he was one of the rebels on the hill. he loved watching this video and was amazed with the tinternet, silly old hippy lol.
i go to freshwater most years for a holiday break,it was the best festival ever ,i was 16 and the last night was very eery ,just before hendrix came on ,slightly misty and quite cold ,packed solid in front of the stage ,i was very stoned ,girl next to me kept giving me blowbacks ,sold my tent to get packet of 10 number 6 and ferry ticket home .
Thanks for posting this. I was 22 had just got engaged to the girl that was to become my wife and was at the festival. Life was really good. Not all Islanders were against the Festival, just some of the older fogies. The impact on the Island was nowhere near as bad as made out by the press. One headline said the Island was running out of food. Absolute nonsense and the shops were making record profits. Just a shame it was downsized later.
wow this is so good,I was a little girl of 9 years old when this was going on ...my brothers went to it and I remember my dad dropping off and picking them up,seeing this has brought back memories of what it looked like to me!
Celebrated my 19th birthday there, tripped out my head, friggin fantastic wk end though, spent most of my time in desolation row smokin dope then on the hill tripping out, ah memories.
@guillemot37 . I was right there with you age 17. I watched everything with a few acid blots roaming around in my head, oh how sweet it was. Back then it semed like there were enough of us to actually 'win'.
Brought back memories. I walked out at dawn on the Monday with the last act Ritchie Havens playing. My brother was stagehand for the whole show. A great historic clip.
thanks...arrived in London summer of 70 from Amsterdam...met some fellow Canadians who had a flat on Kings Road and decided to go to the Isle of Wight....amazing
Thankyou JED 2781. This is amazing!!! I went to so many festivals in the 70's and only have a few photos to show for it--thats all we had in those days, unless you were like yourself, lucky enough to have a cine-camera!!! I just wish I had invested in one to capture memories like these that will never be repeated. Thanks again for posting.
I was born in Freshwater and apart from the cars and a couple of shops the place still looks the same now as it did then ,brilliant film.I wasnt old enough to go to alone so had to go with my parents ! Watched from the downs, Good memories,Thanks.
Watching this is better than the gig, them old cars and people and stoners just hanging around.the ordinary people are facinating to see because they are not designer hippies, just chill.i might take a bike and dingy from hurst castle to IOW this year and check it out.i'm in bournemouth and always seen it,never been on it..It looks so close from hurst.
Went there this bank hol weekend albeit by red funnel ferry;surreal place..Dossed the night on desolation hill on a bench..nearly froze to death(no sleep sack or tent)..Nice alround coast veiw of island and solent.Went there 2nd night but couldn't see in the dark(moonless night!?! ;couldn't find my bench or decent place to lay (burial mounds and golf coarse on top) An animal was stalking and running circles round me,and i thought i can't doss with this trying to steal my food in the dark..
Cont'..Decided to seek refuge down hill in a place called freshwater beach that i spotted had a weather sheltered bench..good job i did because halfway down the hill i heard a load of bangs!.Turned round and thought i saw giant spiders, turned out that golf couse had a sprinkler systeme! it erupted like a forest of manic flailing fire hoses on the whole hill;20 feet high and berzerk! So glad i didn't hang around or that would of finished me off!!! If you make a spiritual pilgimage watchout!
this is great to see as this was my fathers land. Our house is in the distance in the opening pan shot. it took 12 weeks to get them all off the land, we lost thousands in thefts and damage and were tormented by the locals for years ...but it was all worth it.
Fantastic to see this! I was there with a friend from school. We were both 18 and had hitched down from Leeds at least a week before it started and were one of the first to pitch our tent up on the hill. We had our tickets but can't remember how much they cost. This sort of footage is so rare. Today of course everyone would have recorded every second of the festival. All I have are some photos! Thanks for uploading this. Love and peace........if only.
This brilliant record of the event is pure gold. First time I watched this I was open mouthed, staggered at watching what was triggering so many memories about being at this great festival. Thank you so much for posting this Jed
I'm from Freshwater and i remember it well. 6.36 second into the video is my dad coming round the corner wearing brown sports jacket and white shirt. Awesome find
If you want to know why there was a lot of people looking out to sea (just before you see the helicopter) it was because about 5000 people including me was sunbathing and swimming in the nude at Compton bay beach
oh what fun i have watched this video a few times and i get hairs standing up on my neck every time
Like many others i was there. I was legal though-paid my £5 to get into the main arena. So many big names there it was totally mind blowing! Hitch-hiked down from Stoke. I was a naieve 18 year old whose eyes were opened in more ways than one by the experience. I'm actually on the Message To Love video in the end sequence for about 2 secs! It was great to see it... Sure bought the memories flooding back. One of the best weekends of my life. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Wonderful to see all this again. I was there.....I was 17, and had hitched there.I was camping up on the hill too, in 'Desolation Row', in a big shelter built out of hay bales and plastic sheets called 'Bag End'.We stayed on after the end for a further 10 days, setting up a free food kitchen to feed the peple who stayed on. A fabulous tme!
like some others I was there and camping up on the hill. the film looks like it was shot early in the week, so I cant see myself. mona is very good choice. also like the shots after the end which I remember being a kind of party s over feeling, and the weather changed too.
Thank you for posting this video , I was there and it's exactly what it's looked like . I remember feeling like a 20 's century pilgrim .

I`n Jed as well, well done Jed,have just downloaded Mona by QMS, anybody got any film of Richie Havens doing Here comes the Sun ?
ponytailjed 2 years ago
Richie Havens' performance wasn't filmed according to director Murray Lerner. However an audio recording of his set is in circulation.
