1973 on the BBC if you missed it at the time there were no second chances to seee as nobody had VCRs back then (not sure when they became commonplace but certainly not in 73). A wonderful surprise to see this again, just as I remember, almost 40 years on. Long live nostalgia.
That was great - thanks for posting. I bought the album when it came out but I don't remember this live performance, mind you when it was on I was probably out doing something foolish! One slight disappointment, having watched all three parts I was looking forward to seeing Viv Stanshall in his pomp doing the vocal at the end - but he was only present on tape. Mind you when they were playing he was probably out doing something foolish too!
Marvellous. Fantastic to see this piece played by such an amazing group of talents. Really great in particular to see Hillage playing alongside Taylor. What a treat.
Dunno what possessed 2 people to dislike this.....oh wait, hang on, they WERE possessed (throws holy water at Simon Cowell and other judges)....."The power of Mike compels you, the power of Mike compels you!" lol
This is fab, a fantastic way to hear a classic. Having shown it to my 9 year old after having the very last part of the third part played at my fathers funeral ( we left the venue to the sound of the Tubular Bells, very effective and moving) she now loves the piece, and other works. I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking wow, and as a musician and former A-level music technology student, appreciating what was achieved at a time when the technology wasn't so advanced.
After almost 13 years I had to say goodbye to my best friend, (my dog). The moments I miss him most I listen to this music to feel again the love and all wunderful moments we've had toghether !
@mrsZellamSee Hi, get tears in my eyes when i read this, My 3 best little friends are still with me but if i read messages like this, it reminds me that 1 day the day will come i have to say goodbye to them too.

The music is an absolute masterpiece. After tori amos i jumped on this.
@gibderfenson Yes he is there. What great players. Oldfields 1978 Incantations was re-released last Friday, a double play vinyl originally..He was 25.
Never heard this version before. I had the 8-track, cassette, and CD but they were all of the same recording. This was close, but there are some definite changes. Still, seeing how YOUNG Mike looks in these videos. To think of what cranked out of his head for just this piece, and then part II. Ooof!
Great. I remember watching this on Second House. This is the only music that I have 4(ish) copies of. Vinyl (black + picture disk), 8 track tape (my folks car only had this in 1976), cassette and CD. Guess I need to get VHS tape, a DVD and download it from i**nes before I die....
This piece of music is still a masterpiece. After watching all of it, I still get a rush. What an amazing work of art. Thank you Mike Oldfield. And thanks again Shaktiedj
somehow i've listened to this before but just realized how amazing it is, eargasm - is that the word? haha thank you so much to whoever uploaded this!
Estos tipos eran sencillamente geniales, como se echa de menos en estos tiempos todo ese talento, menos mal que nos quedan estos documentos que sirven de testimonio de tanta calidad.
He took what was in his head and gave birth to it. Simple as that. I'm sure it probably didn't make sense to him at the time, but dammit he ran with it. It's a truly great piece of music; not the best perhaps, but the brilliance of his bringing it to fruition is epic. This is inspirational, and therein lies it's greatness, music of the highest order.
Realmente me sorprende la puesta en escena, el set y los instrumentos, el orden y la filmación, no se ven camaras, pero hay un monton de planos cortos..Realmente una producción de adelantados.....
Absolutely fabulous. Truly amazing; it's like a symphony, composed by one man, but performed by many. Of course, the most amazing thing is that the original was performed by just one man. Thank you for posting it.
Increible, yo tendría 6 añitos pero me acuerdo de oirsela a mis primos, quedo impronta en mi mente pra siempre. Simplemente EXCEPCIONAL!!!!!! Quien puede superarlo????
I`m old enough to have watched this very piece on t.v. back in `74. I was 16,& watching these 3 vids reminded me of how I felt back then. Still gives me goosebumps! True genius!
I love the guitar work that starts at about 0:45. It lays an amazing foundation for the remaining instruments to layer upon. And I'm thinking it has to be extremely difficult for these guys to keep up that repititon throughout the song. They aren't just playing a few simple chords but they make it look effortless. Just amazing piece of music.
@MrCheeseILike I hadn't heard this in a very long time and did a search for this specific version. I think I listened to it at least 15 times over. The first time I ever heard the long version of Tubular Bells it was being played on a "Reel To Reel". That was back in the mid '70's if memory serves. Long time ago. Loved it then, Still love it, but I now I've learned to appreciate the amazing talent involved in creating it. It's musical genius.
Not to shock nor promote a more experimental time...
But there is nothing like a green 1968 Chevy SS Nova, windows wide open, free-railing at 115 mph, big-sky-burnt plains of Montana, the peaks of the rockies beginning to caress the red-shifted sunset, blast gorged on windowpane acid, laser-eyed from 23 hours on the road, and Tubular Bells arcing the journey ahead.
Whew.. wish I had the courage that I had back in 1976.
My god, look at that credit list of musicians--the absolute cream of the UK crop of players at that time. I think this version is just amazing, and the visuals are great.
just sampled TB II and III and the original version without all the disco beats is still the best. Wonderful to just watch them getting into the music.
Few years back I was on concert where a band and small choir assembled from art oriented highscool performed this and Tubular Bells II, meaning the one album produced by Trevor Horn. It was sort of joint exam at the same time the students having produced it all by themselves incl. full lightshow, renting the venue etc.
I can vividly remember a man 50+ of age swaying to music, actually almost moshing :) Obviously an evidence of music like this sorely needed.
There is only one thing wrong with this clip, they cut it, I don't know of "a reed and pipe organ". Over the years i have brought this 5 times, 3 of them on disc, i think mike has had enough of my money.
Don't blame Mike for you being a sucker... All you needed was the pre-quad TB on vinyl and the original release on CD.... I'll give you, maybe, the quad release on vinyl, but other than that you're a sucker for buying this album 5 times.... so please, do not blame Oldfield.
Does anyone know exactly when and where this was recorded? Is this available anywhere? Is it a widely distributed ROIO? I'd love to get a copy of this!
oh my god......what memories...now what ..35 years ago...in college we were listening to this before the exorist came out and were blown away. thanks for this great video.
Oh I miss those years when young musicians were looking for new contributions to music...really pioneers far ahead from their time. I wish nowadays musicians could do the same and continue discovering new sounds and melodies instead of making simple "catchy" rythms with empty lyrics.
Thank you so much for posting this. It took me back to my college dorm days where we played the hell out of the album. I still have my vinyl version in mint condition. A timeless classic; true artistry. This is when music was real music.
Takes me back to 1974 when I left home to work in Leicester use to help me when I was on my own feeling lonely and a little exposed in a new city with only one friend. Llistening to this was a way to forget my worries. Fantastic piece of music - awesome to think one man was so dedicated and had so much belief in himself that he spent the time he did to complete it. Hats off to those who can play an instrument - Ultimate Respect - if they play more than one.
Watch Mike's left hand at 11 seconds into this portion. It's like he's saying "Finish this already, it's starting to drag". Then he's using his awe inspiring bass guitar to lead it into the instrument introductions. Remember... for the original album, he was ALONE, playing ALL the instruments, one at a time, over and over, for the entire album - both sides. He's a fantastic musician/composer! I love all his music.
There is some very good music out there, the trouble is you don't hear it on the radio as they keep playing the crap boy and girl bands to make money for the record companies. The more crap they put out the less i buy.
Mike and his friends in this three part video draw me back to the days of my youth. THIS is music. It's agreeable to the ear, mind, and heart. I listened to this when I was young, and still have the original vinyl album in my collection -as close to mint condition as nearly 40 years will allow. favorite part of these videos is in part 2 at 3:45 and 6:30 with the guitar riffs that look like they were very "Mellow" when they played them. They love music as much as I.
Got this album when i was 14 (when it came out), and listened to it all day. Other bands came and went my way, but I will never get tired of listening to this. All these lads are just passionate music nerds, just like me.
Wow! I've never seen the whole performance before. Only the edited version on Elements. And wonderful quality it is. Thanks for posting this. A real gem.
A wonderful trip down memory lane. I saw this on TV in 1973 when i was 13 and rode my bike to Zayre's Dept. store in Portland, Maine the next day to buy it. I've loved it ever since. I loved seeing Steve Hillage playing guitar in the group. I went on to be a big Hillage fan a couple of years later. Check out Oldfields' " Hergest Ridge" and " Ommadawn ". Just as good as the mighty " Tubular Bells " i think. How much would life suck without music?
It would indeed suck. Ommadawn replaced Tubular for many years as my fav Oldfield, but seeing this vid again (I did see it many moons ago, I must have been 10), brings Tubular all home to me. I lived vicariously through my sister's vinyl copy. Wore it out!! I too am a big Hillage fan, all that Gong. Frith is pretty terrific in this too.
I first heard Tubular Bells watching the Exorcist. Later I would find out there was an album. I still have it. The original vinyl recording. Three parts to listen to it. Worth the time. Thanks Mike. For all the old memories associated with this wonderful 'jam session'.
This video, in three parts ,had me almost in tears. I remember when I was about 17 years old my friend Greg and I used to perform the last part of this song on two bass guitars. Greg passed when when I was 19. This Video brought back many wonder memories of Greg and I in my bedroom with a bass guitar in our hands, learning all sorts of songs no matter what the style was. Tubular Bells was once such song that made us appreciate music. Thank God for Mike Oldfield.
This is my favorite version of this song, later M.O made another one were the melody is a little different, this is the one I like it, Is the original. I liove it
That guitar was made by the Baldwin Company back in the 70s. Very rare. It has split coil pick ups, similar to the type found on the Fender Electric XII. Reissued fairly recently by Burns Guitars.
Just stop being a christian and the good times will soon begin. God obviously doesn't exist or if he does, doesn't give a fuck about you if he replaced your exorcisms, which is just insanity to begin with, with molestation, perhaps the single most repugnant offense there is. This song is more Godly than that invisible man you talk to every day.
Used to Listen to this Album back when it was released and i was 15yr old...Headphones On, laying on my Bed...and Just letting the Music Flow through.....Was Brilliant then, and is Still Brilliant now,and am pleased to Say that its also on my Son's List of Favorites on here as well....Seems i Taught him well:):)...Nice to also See Steve Hillage and Pierre Moerlen on there as well...saw both of them with Gong a few times and also saw Hillage Solo as well......
That guitar was made by the Baldwin Company back in the 70s. Very rare. It has split coil pick ups, similar to the type found on the Fender Electric XII. Reissued fairly recently by Burns Guitars.
This song was my ticket to the Dark Side. Well, musically speaking, anyway. I was a kid when this came out, only the am stations always played the way-too-short edited version. Then one day a dj said "it's time you heard the whole thing!", and played all of side 1, which is what you heard here. I was absolutely mesmerized! Top 40 radio just couldn't be tolerated anymore (the disco era was just around the corner, too). So I sought out the "underground" fm stations, and never looked back!

Reminds me of my maths homework and the last days of school in 1975. I can recall my Auntie asking my mother "when did he start liking bagpipes"?
Also how great to see Mr Hillage who is a great inspiration of mine and continues on making excellent music with System 7.

Thanks.

TIMOTHYSAARINEN 2 years ago

For all the old memories associated with this wonderful 'jam session'.

what does he say at 2: 31?

This video, in three parts ,had me almost in tears. I remember when I was about 17 years old my friend Greg and I used to perform the last part of this song on two bass guitars. Greg passed when when I was 19. This Video brought back many wonder memories of Greg and I in my bedroom with a bass guitar in our hands, learning all sorts of songs no matter what the style was. Tubular Bells was once such song that made us appreciate music. Thank God for Mike Oldfield.

I just love the way the guys seem so "laid back" when playing. I guess, when you are skilled musicians, it's easy.
Makes me realise just how much crap is past off as music today compared with this brilliance!

That guitar was made by the Baldwin Company back in the 70s. Very rare. It has split coil pick ups, similar to the type found on the Fender Electric XII. Reissued fairly recently by Burns Guitars.

thanks for posting. this was made when we catholics were worried about exorcisms and not molestations. where have all the good times gone?

Just stop being a christian and the good times will soon begin. God obviously doesn't exist or if he does, doesn't give a fuck about you if he replaced your exorcisms, which is just insanity to begin with, with molestation, perhaps the single most repugnant offense there is. This song is more Godly than that invisible man you talk to every day.
