Man whenever I'm on the expressway people drive the same (over the speed limit which is 70) no matter what the conditions. Whenever there is ice I avoid the expressway because sure enough there is a crash before my exit and traffic is literally halted so it would take at least an hour to get to the nearest exit.
It happens everywhere, people have an accident, get out of the safety of their cars to stand in the middle of a highway when they see other cars are crashing, just like they did. Plain DUMB . Use your head, analyze the situation, drive slower in bad conditions. No wonder hundreds die daily in car accidents.
I'm pretty sure I'll agree with most of the comments, once I know the facts, but...
After having seen drastic changes in weather from one side of a tunnel, to the other, I have to ask; was it much nicer on the other side?
Is there anything in the tunnel to warn drivers of conditions at the exit?
Are there any curves near the exit?
Even if the facts imply surprise, I still fail to understand why people aren't slowing down before exiting the tunnel, which is the reason for the last question.

I read in a former comment that the weather at the other side of the tunnel can be complet different and then you drive out of the tunnel and suddenly there is ice and snow. So I think that the most drivers were surprised and couldn't stop their cars.
Probably not idiots, they just got too comfortable in the controlled conditions of that tunnel and didn't anticipate the very bad conditions waiting at the the tunnel exit. I've travelled one tunnel in Italy that was more than 14 km long. When I entered the tunnel it was hot, sunny and dry. Wehn I exited on the other side of the mountain about 10 minutes later, it was a total downpour and I had a few seconds where I was totally blind, until the first wiper blade passed over the windshield.
One dumb idiot after another, I guess they were all oblivious to all of those four-way flashers going on at the top of the hill, and how everyone has pull off to the right onto the shoulder. lol....
I guess they never heard of using winter tires in winter and when having a speed limit every one thinks this is to be used under all conditions of weather ...
Some of those tunnels on that autostrada are 25 miles long. It is possible the drivers had no idea it was snowy until they came out of the tunnel. Since many of the tunnels lead up and though mountain ranges.
This video is very nice prove that the weather is not the quilt of stack-ups that sometimes happen. The main fault is in the fact, that much of drivers are moronic idiots (I guess about 20 percent). You can purely see on this video, that the major part of drivers can safely stop their vehicles. Even with a equally distance. Regrettably, there are some idiots that has no conception about what is safe distance or adapting drive according to road's surface stance...
Whenever there is such a condition on the road, first I try not to drive on that day (i'll explain why below) :) But if you really have to, you can't drive faster than 50 km/h even on highway, and you have to keep huge distance from the car in front of you.
But no matter how careful you are, it is still dangerous because most of the idiots out there drive too fast, hit hard on breaks and don't keep distance so you risk being hit by one of them!
Some unlukcky, but serveral completely metnally fucked up drivers, which should never even touch a car. The 3 cars hyperspeedign at 1.40min - some idiot driving like that should never get a license. The same at 20.10, 2.17, 2.47, and all idiots, which see cars piled up after 3.00, but try to pass by with well above 50 kph, instead of breakiing well before....
That's why you have todrive with appropriate speed, on that conditions max 50, perhaps in low traffic 60 kph. And you have to take a lot of distance to the next, and when visibility reduces (curve) you still need to slow down. Half of the people managed = drove correct...

When stopped or stuck in such conditions, switch off the vehicles headlights, the world-standard amber coloured flashing 'hazard-warning lights' really do stand out much better then. It really is true.
One of the drivers who stopped to the left for a bit in the video did a great job of alerting rear-approaching trucks, without him this event would have been worse. Handy to have a 27Mhz EU FM CB for the purpose.

Some of those tunnels on that autostrada are 25 miles long. It is possible the drivers had no idea it was snowy until they came out of the tunnel. Since many of the tunnels lead up and though mountain ranges.

This video is very nice prove that the weather is not the quilt of stack-ups that sometimes happen. The main fault is in the fact, that much of drivers are moronic idiots (I guess about 20 percent). You can purely see on this video, that the major part of drivers can safely stop their vehicles. Even with a equally distance. Regrettably, there are some idiots that has no conception about what is safe distance or adapting drive according to road's surface stance...

Whenever there is such a condition on the road, first I try not to drive on that day (i'll explain why below) :) But if you really have to, you can't drive faster than 50 km/h even on highway, and you have to keep huge distance from the car in front of you.
But no matter how careful you are, it is still dangerous because most of the idiots out there drive too fast, hit hard on breaks and don't keep distance so you risk being hit by one of them!

Some unlukcky, but serveral completely metnally fucked up drivers, which should never even touch a car. The 3 cars hyperspeedign at 1.40min - some idiot driving like that should never get a license. The same at 20.10, 2.17, 2.47, and all idiots, which see cars piled up after 3.00, but try to pass by with well above 50 kph, instead of breakiing well before....

That's why you have todrive with appropriate speed, on that conditions max 50, perhaps in low traffic 60 kph. And you have to take a lot of distance to the next, and when visibility reduces (curve) you still need to slow down. Half of the people managed = drove correct...

When stopped or stuck in such conditions, switch off the vehicles headlights, the world-standard amber coloured flashing 'hazard-warning lights' really do stand out much better then. It really is true.
One of the drivers who stopped to the left for a bit in the video did a great job of alerting rear-approaching trucks, without him this event would have been worse. Handy to have a 27Mhz EU FM CB for the purpose.
* EU cars have bright, fluroescent & reflective safety vests in them!

Those idiots need to slow down...Everyone with commonsense was able to slow down or move over. As far as the tunnel goes they knew what the conditions were like when they entered the tunnel. These guys looked like they were going 45-60mph even after people crashed and traffic made it all the way back to the tunnel they were still trying to speed and weave through the already crashed and stopped cars!!!!!!!!!
