mastodon did not sell out. People should be grateful at how many different varied songs they have rather than rehashing the same songs for 5 albums like most bands these days. Theyre the only band I know that is just as good heavy as they are proggy, thrashy, psychedelic, rock, punk, everything. You cant base a band on one album alone. Mastodon has done it all
The thing that fans of bands do not care to consider, is that from a "business" perspective, it might actually be better to start off targeting a less profitable audience such as metal heads by creating really awesome head-banging metal albums, correct? Then, slowly, a band can start to garner attention that way and then when they start writing a wider assortment of musical styles, they already have their initial fan base, and can start adding newer fans. But by this time...
The band might start alienating some of their initial fan base in order to really flourish as the band they want to be. But that's just too god damn bad, and in my opinion, the fans a band might lose in this process are probably stubborn pricks or just don't really have much musical taste other than deafening audio-assaults, which really doesn't showcase much depth of personality. Who gives a shit about those people anyway?
Ultimately, my point is that if you can't appreciate a band for everything they've done, then perhaps you just aren't a fan of the band. If you liked Mastodon for their early stuff but absolutely abhor anything past Leviathan, you'll be just as well moving on to other music that is generally the same. In this case it isn't the artist you enjoy, and at that point, most people couldn't care less about what you've got to say.
I bought this album because I thought the cover was dope and loved their name so I wanted to give them a listen. I remember popping it in and hearing this song come on and being blown away in the first 10 seconds.
Regarding Masotdon's newer stuff, I think the musical side of things have gotten rusty. However, the singing and melodies put into their works are much better than they used to. This is basically pure sludge/progressive. Nowadays they're basically just metal.
@Transcedant see i think thats unfair. i will agree that they got less "sludgy" but i think lumping songs like oblivion and divinations into a category like "metal" is too broad. i dont even think theyre music has suffered any when it comes to sophistication. a lot of it is way more complex and deep sounding to me than the Big dumb and loud sound they used to have (which i am also a fan of).. i play guitar, and while SOME of their new songs are simple, the majority are much harder to play
@Transcedant I don't really agree with you there- personall compared to Crack The Skye this album is metal. Crack The Skye whilst a masterpiece and their best album (in my opinion) is not really metal. It's too vast to be given a specific genre as it has metal, progressive and sludge themes to it. The Hunter is reall just a heavy rock album so not really metal (it's bloody different whatever you consider it). Whatever genre you consider them to be, they're a bloody creative bunch of guys :)
As I always put it, change is gonna happen. I like that Mastodon can change but still keep the Mastodon name. I still need this album though. I have all the other albums just not this one for some reason.
@Tviruskillu Personally whenever I've looked online, this album is MUCH MORE money than all of their others. Also, I have never seen it in any HMV's pretty much the only CD shop near me which sucks as HMV has a really shite collection of Mastodon by basically only stocking The Hunter and Crack The Skye. I think it might be fairly rare CD to get which would explain it.
This band used to be so heavy it was insane... live, they made no sense... it was a wall of noise.
I say them in London opening for Tool about 5/6 years ago and then Metallica about 4 years ago... nobody but me in the crowds knew them then and people literally walked out to go get drinks etc. It was just noise coming from the stage that was too much for even metal heads to take.
Now I've see them on frickin Jools Holland's Jazz show.. WTF.
@jjcale1111 Opening for Metallica is never a good an opportunity in terms of quality. I saw Volbeat opening for them and even though I like the band I thought the sound sucked ! Of course it's made on purpose...Plus Metallica fans are... x)
@TheLastBaron16 Of course they are I don't deny it. But opening for them is not a good opportunity in terms of sound quality...But In terms of fame it is (if we take the example of Gojira)
Going from Crack The Skye to this (or the other way round, doesnt matter) shows you how much mastodon changed their sound, which isn't a bad thing as this sounds really good and Crack The Skye is a masterpiece imo.
remission is actually the only mastodon album i really like. leviathan is very good but everything after doesn't do it for me. but because of this album, Mastodon is amazing
@SoundECH0 I'm glad you put it like that. I'm getting so annoyed with people saying Mastodon sold out. But yes, probably one of the greatest debut albums of all time
@SoundECH0 idk. i consider crack the skye to be a masterpiece. the song construction and vocal harmonies are insanely amazing. i like the complexity.. obviously im not dogging on the earlier work i like it all. i just dont get how you cant like their newer stuff. i feel like they came into thier own on the later albums without abandoning where they came from
You all heard the new record? Jesus christ Warner Brothers really tells this band what to do these days. I can't believe they tour with shitty washed up bands like Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam.
@ToolOfTrade I respectfully disagree. I think Mastodon's new album is as good as the rest, it's just different. I don't think Mastodon would be bossed around by a record company and even if they did, they'd still make good music. I hate it when people hate on bands because they change. Why can't you see it as a new step for Mastodon?
@ToolOfTrade Not really. I'm just not a hipster who hates music because it's "mainstream". If I like the music I'll listen to it and I think The Hunter has good songs
@ToolOfTrade You sound like any other youtube-troll logic brainwashed fool who thinks everything "mainstream" is shit and "indie/underground" stuff is the best. I hope you know that Mastodon's Leviathan is recognized by soo many people of the metal community, even THAT can potentially be called "mainstream" in the metal community. Other than that, I love The Hunter, especially the title track. So much meaning to it...
@TheLastBaron16 I have to agree with that idea. Most people want metal to never change, but the fact of the matter is, that if metal doesnt change it doesnt last. And they can argue with it all they want but name one metal band that made it big that didnt change their sound.
I would say ACDC and Motorhead... Always the same sound, that's why I say they're overrated. If the music sounds good, I like it. That's as simple as that
@TheLastBaron16 I agree, man! Same thing going on with Baroness. People bitching about it changing. Musicians and in turn the bands are constantly learning and evolving and trying new things. They have to grow.
@TheLastBaron16 I used to think that. listen to it a few more times. Too many pop songs on it, namely curl of the burl. Despite all the super distorted riffage, the song doesnt feel heavy in the least.
@TheLastBaron16 I would like it a lot more if they had fewer harmony effects on the vocals. I like their singing, but it feels like theyre not confident in it.
@hojima mastodon have evolved past metal. listen to crack the skye. that shit isnt straight metal. in fact i have been bored of metal for over 10 years until someone showed me crack the skye and i was blown away. this band is taking the genre to new places. thank god for that. this band is better than metal. they are heavy but dont rely on the crutches of the genre. they take it to a new level, and have far surpassed their peers in my opinion.
@seanmitchell88 I love crack the skye, but the hunter just isnt as good. Sure theres some great songs, but listen to curl of the burl and tell me that. It is just distorted guitar with rock singing. Its not really doing anything new or great.
@hojima i like that tune. not saying that song is doing anything new or great tho. i think the hunter has some badass proggy sounding tunes though, the title track, and stuff like octopus and bedazzled fingernails and the sparrow all have a very deep atmosphere to them that almost no bands can do like them (pink floyd was great at this also). but i think crack the skye is the best example for what i was reffering to. they have really taken metal to new places in terms of quality and emotionality
@hojima To be fair to Mastodon, how the hell were they supposed to make a better album than Crack The Skye? I think on The Hunter they went down the distorted guitar with rock singing route becase they weren't going to write songs in the same style as Crack The Skye that were better. I agree with you that Crack The Skye is better than The Hunter, but The Hunter beats the crap out of a lot of the new albums last year.
@seanmitchell88 Well said. I'm tired of genres as well and pretty much only listen to bands that have learned to fuse different musical styles into their work.
@seanmitchell88 With peers such as Avenged Sevenfold, Trvium and every metal and deathcore band- it wasn't exactly hard for them. This comment isn't meant to take anything away from the genius of that album (genius doesn't even cover it) but the Metal scene is in such shit right now. As you said, Mastodon are one of the few bands taking the genre to new and exciting places and seriously deserve more recognition for it.
Shitty washed up bands like Alice in Chains. Find me one well-respected musician who would even think about talking shit about AiC. Do you realize that Maynard showed up to sing a song at Layne Staley's memorial concert?
