Lord Sopwith used his own money to build the first 100 hurricanes before receiving the first government contract. The RAF therefore had 100 more hurricanes than it would otherwise. He possibly saved his country by doing this.

The ugly french bomber at the start of the piece is the Amiot 143. Basically of the same era as the Handley Page Heyford it was obsolete as the war started and they were hacked down with ease by the Luftwaffe. It was very very slow and carried a tiny bombload. Amiot had a new attractive twin engined bomber just entering production in '40 called the Amiot 354 but as usual they ran out of time.

@swanningaround The war was won by a gigantic allied effort. No nation won it by themselves. The Soviets fought huge battles in the east and had 300 fully equipped divisions but 4 out of every six vehicles they used were made in the west. Most from the USA but also thousands from Canada and Britain. The USA supplied the Red army half a million tonnes of steel rail tracks and 26million boots etc etc. The USA had 70 divisions in Europe when war ended and Britain about 12.

I am amazed that these views are being expressed in 2008.The German Emperor and Army encouraged Austria-Hungary to start a European war in 1914,because it was terrified of Russia and France getting stronger.Germany invaded Belgium with no legal reason, just for convenience.Germany 'stole' land from France in 1870 and from Germany in 1918.Yes,Germany suffered due to WWI and the Depression but that cannot justify going to war to enslave Europe and to murder tens of millions of jews and Slavs.

as late as 1937 My grandfather who later was to become a Reuters war correspondent was told to fabricate stories about dummy German tanks & aeroplanes, despite him having interviewed Goebbels in 1935 and being left in no doubt as to German intentions. There was an overriding fear that the Douhet theory was right and that workers would rebel leaving factories & cities when the first bombs fell! The official view was that the 'lower orders' had no stomach for it and were unreliable.
