  • I first heard this in the mid-90's and it immediately hit me with its class. I play it over to reflect on those times. Great recording.

  • Beautiful in every way

  • It doesn't look or feel low budget at all, it's fantastic :)

  • I love this song most the time but the extra acoustic on this version is distracting

  • very hip version of one of the sweetest Scottish melodies ever.well done.

  • @greasemonkey1228

This is actually an Irish Song the writer was from Belfast

  • Great video lyrical and great sense of humour. Arrangement of the song is very appealing right combination yearning and oomph.

  • Makes you proud to be Scottish!

  • @timeforthebigsleep But I'm not.

  • @FridayFace I just came here to drown in the lascivious beauty of the music!!! And happened to be Scottish!

  • @timeforthebigsleep sorry mate but this is an Irish song

  • @mudman1881 the band!

  • @mudman1881 hey there...it is a Northern Irish song. It was written in Belfast by Francis McPeake, but was influenced by Ulster Scots culture, directly inspired by the ballad 'The Braes of Belquether'.

  • @92balthazar

    Awa' an' dinnae talk pish!!

The Words were PUBLISHED in 1803, by Robert Tannahill of Paisley, ( Aye Ian's old toon!), and McPeake was a theivin' bastard! He STOLE these lyrics & tried to pass them off as his own, the cunt, like trying to pass off Rab Burns poems as "Ulster Scots", it's lying pish!!

The REAL & original lyrics are "The Braes of Balquidder" by Robert Tannahill, ya bunch o'sadsacks!

You're shaming yer ain kin ya eejits!

  • @DonegalRaymie201 l did note that the origins of the song were found in 'The Braes of Belquether' (or 'Belquidder', as it is also spelled).

It is part of a folk tradition--one cannot accuse McPeake of being a 'theivin' (sic) bastard' no more than one can accuse Joan Baez or Van Morrison of being the same, as they altered the words of the original poem.

No one with any historical knowledge of Ulster or Scotland would claim Robert Burns as being an Ulster Scotsman; he was a Scotsman.

  • @92balthazar

In fairness, it was the McPeake family that tried to pass of Tannahill's song as an original composition, when they saw £signs in Rod Stewart's version! They were ran out of court. Old Francie himself, more modestly, said he learned it from an uncle.

And BTW, it's BALquidder, from the Gaelic word "Baile" meaning town, as it Balgowan, Balintoy or Balmoral! Just like the very common "Bally" in Ulster, as in Ballymena, Ballycastle or Ballymoney! Do you see?

  • @DonegalRaymie201 Oh, l was unaware of a court case. Yeah, l know Rod's versionwas called 'Purple Heather', like the Morrison version--although Van's version was much more creative with lyrics etc. In any case, it is a folk song in the public domain- l would never claim that the McPeakes deserve any financial gain from other artist's renditions of the song.

Even the Tannahill poem bears only a similarity to the song as it is commonly recognised. Change over time.

    'Bel' was my misspelling.

  • @92balthazar

    Have you read Tannahill's original?

Tannahill: Noo the simmer's in prime Wi' the flooers richly bloomin' Wi' the wild mountain thyme A' the moorlan's perfumin'

McPeake: O the summer time is coming And the trees are sweetly blooming And the wild mountain thyme Grows around the purple heather

It's a verse for verse paraphrase, but worse than that it's been Anglicised, to remove the Scots/ Lallans words!

  • @DonegalRaymie201 I'm certainly not disputing the Tannahill origins of the song. The McPeake version has been *directly* inspired by the Tannahill poem, but it has been modernised/Anglicised for the then emergent popular folk scene. Tannahill's poem has verses that were untouched by McPeake. P.S-- interesting to note that the Sandy Denny rendition included the word 'perfumin'', harking back to the Tannahill poem.

My original claim was that it was an Ulster Scots song-written by McPeake ...

  • @DonegalRaymie201 (who l understand identified as Ulster Scots), who was born in Belfast and he was influenced by Scottish folk traditions. Ergo, Ulster Scottish.

  • @92balthazar

I'm not sure you grasp what I'm saying. I'm not disputing McPeake's Belfast origins, I'm disputing your claim, about this song, that "it was an Ulster Scots song-written by McPeake"!

(Unless by "written" you mean "plagiarized", in which case we agree?)

The McPeake family claimed this as an Original Composition, with ZERO credit given to Tannahill as the source of the original lyrics, until they were produced in Court!

    Are you with me?

  • @DonegalRaymie201 Until today, l was unaware of that case. But l don't believe that family have an explicit claim to the song. It is a folk song.

When l said written, l was referring to Wild Mountain Thyme, as it is known today, thanks to numerous folk singers who have interpreted it themselves since it was modernised and popularised. Had the McPeake version not been written, arranged, would it have become so well known internationally- outside of the British Isles. This does not diminish

  • @DonegalRaymie201 the importance of the Tannahill poem. I did mention Tannahill in the original post. This song wouldn't have existed without him, but l disagree that McPeake plagiarised, There was no copyright etc, It is public domain and can be interpreted, expanded etc by any artist.

McPeake;s importance cannot be denied. Wild Mountain Thyme is a song arranged by him, even if it was based on Tannahill's words.

  • @92balthazar

To attempt to pass off someone else's work, as your own original composition, is the very definition of Plagiarism, as I understand the term! Perhaps you have a different understanding of the word.

In any case, when the evidence was examined in a Court of Law, the McPeake family, as well as failing to win any royalties, were accused of plagiarism by the sitting judge! And BTW, there are American arrangements dating back to 1821, of the original song.

  • @DonegalRaymie201 shocked by the plagiarism claim even by a judge. I know this sounds really repetitive and simplistic--but its a folk song! :)

As is my understanding, the poem itself was published posthumously in 1821. l know that there are Scottish folk arrangements, which were primitive but nevertheless influenced McPeake.

I don't believe that McPeake wanted to pass it off as his own at all, the Tannahill poem is well known in Scotland and

Ulster. His family's motives were self serving

  • @92balthazar

Yes, it is a folk song, so they should never have been trying to claim royalties in the 1st place, which may well have angered the Judge, especially when the defence produced an old edition of Tannahill's work!

And I'm not blaming old Francie McPeake, as I said, he claimed he learned it from his uncle, but his family's opportunism.

Weird thing is, Tannahill, being "lang deid", meant that the original was out of copywright, so it wouldn't have cost a bean to credit him!

  • @DonegalRaymie201 I agree. l never knew about the court case. It is ridiculous that the McPeake family tried to claim royalties, it is part of the folk tradition.

Honestly, when l saw your claim, l assumed it was rooted in sectarian bias that permeates anything even vaguely related to Northern Ireland.

  • @92balthazar

Please God no! I just think poor old Tannahill deserves a wee bit of credit is all. And anyway, he would have been a "guid proddy man" too, just like his lofty contemporary, Rab Burns or McPeake himself, for that matter! So no sectarian difference, and I'm no Rep' anyway.

If you were to describe this as a McPeake reworking/ arrangement/ adaptation of Tannahill, I'd be fine with that. But not that he "wrote" the song, which old Francie never claimed anyway!

  • @timeforthebigsleep & (part) Scot ! :D

  • exellent

  • This should be the real Scottish national anthem and not Donald wheres your Troosers

  • Beautiful and inspiring indeed!

  • pulling off a major folk standard with such great beauty is nothing but amazing,

  • Great song, Aura is 1 hell of a singer but i still prefer the band when it was just Jim singing, 1986-1991.

  • Awesome song! Thanks!

  • Dear Steve, This is marvelous. I was a member of the Delaware Valley Branch of the Royal Scottish Dance Society, when I was at Swarthmore College (1974-1978). I also learned Scottish Highland Dancing with a teacher suitably named Mrs. Mary Stewart, who lived in the ethnic Scottish enclave of Kearney, New Jersey (near Newark). I play this over and over and over. Did not know about The Silencers. Thank you for introducing me to them! Shalom from Yerushalayim, Lowell Joseph Gallin

  • Thanks GhengisKen!

  • Best version of this song ever

  • l may come from england.... but this song is amazing..... and the Silencers do it with style, and probably the best rendition ever

  • THE GIFTED INTERPRETATION OF THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW IMPOVERISHED WE WOULD BE WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO TRACK DOWN PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN RECORDINGS IF YOU TUBE DID NOT PROVIDE US WITH THE MEANS TO DO SO. A WONDERFUL RENDITION.

  • As my friend, Adrian Gibb wished when he posted this on Facebook today, "I pray that the misty rain and blazing green of Alba swim in your soul when you hear this" ... Alba does indeed swim in my soul listening to this hauntingly beautiful interpretation of this song. The video is magickal. Now a favorite!

  • Favorite Version...love the fiddle players look of boredom at 2:20 from pretty much sawin out a single note for 4 minutes and 20 some odd seconds....cool.

  • Just beautiful and so glad a friend recommended me to listen this song...

  • Beautiful vid. Seems to connect the ancient with the modern in a remarkably vivid and graceful way. Simple and wonderful.

  • I LOVE this song and the video captures the feel/mood perfectly to me. It quickly became one of my all time favorites since finding it. thanks for telling the backstory. Great job Steve and John!

  • can't believe anyone would complain about this, it's beautiful!

  • I guess someone have already said this but a big budget often compensate for a lack of soul.

  • I really like this - and great shoot - low budget doesn't mean low-quality here!

  • You say "low budget" as if that were a bad thing! Man, I'm 39 years old, and this was shot like a mix between "Tears for Fears" and "Dexy's Midnight Runners" A "totally" 80's feel, and one HELL of a great song!

I vote that you shoot ALL your videos the same way. Very unique, and who the fuck wants some record exec asswipe telling you how to film your art anyway?

  • Just lovely. Thank you

  • It's the greatest, best version of this song. Graet band, great music!

  • I don't know about that. This is pretty good. The Byrds version with that chiming Rickenbacker of Roger McGuinn is superior

    KurtfromLaQuinta

  • @09Umera i think Deacon Blue's version beats it just, simply because it's sung by Lorraine Macintosh, who has a voice of an angel, though his daughter doe a good job, and she is totally a fox.....i would, so would all of your make friends.... it is still a great version

  • Like how come I can't turn this up?

  • who is the girl in the video?

  • @affman123 - it's the lead singer's daughter Aura O'Neill. From wikipedia:

"In 1994, The Silencers signed to new labels: Permanent for Britain and BMG for France. That summer they recorded the song "Wild Mountain Thyme", featuring O'Neill's daughter Aura on vocals. It became a hit in Scotland after featuring in a tourism board advertising campaign. Soon after, they completed fifth album So Be It."
