I like this movie, but I'm more exited about the remake. I like the comedic take this version had,but I'd love to see a seriously scary version of this movie. Hoping the best for the 2013 remake of the film.
I really like this movie and its soundtrack. I often watch it because it reminds me the ride. Besides in France the Phantom Manor's story is different but I prefer this version.
@disneygenius That's the whole reason there's a 13. People think 13 is an unlucky number (Friday the 13th) plus a clock chiming 13 is supposed to be like a bad sign. Plus it's after midnight so it's something like the bewitching hour. It's just supposed to add more creepiness and mystery into the beginning of the film. And why did you type in all caps?
I love the intro and premise for this movie. I just didn't like that it was geared to be a comedy instead of scary or a drama. I'm just happy they are making another one. :)
@A4Guerrero Yep. It was announced last year and it's in the production stages right now. They haven't set an official date yet but it's supposed to be more scary like the similar feeling you get in the actual attraction. It's being directed by Guillermo del Toro. There are a few articles and pieces of artwork you can see if you do a google search.
I don't really care what anyone else says-I've always loved the Haunted Mansion, ever since I first rode it as a kid (I was terrified at first, though). This movie really captured the feel of the ride, and that's all that really matters to me-as long as they get the atmosphere and the Ghost Host down, I'm happy. Nathaniel Parker was /perfect/ as Master Gracey, whether or not he's the actual GH. I think Disney leaves it up to the riders to decide for themselves who is who in HM lore.
Unfortunately, I agree with the description. The film maintains the comical spookiness of the original ride, but the first few SECONDS of the movie alone... They give you a complete and unwavering macabre feeling, one that seems to promise you a near-horror movie. The rest of the movie's style is kind of a let-down, having followed such a dark opening.
1:14 ok does anyone know where the hell i can get that music box? Or even someting similar to it? I've been looking for it ever since this bloody movie came out!
@TherealRNO actually the ghost host isn't master gracy. The name gracy is a tribute to disney Imagineer Yale Gracy who i believe created most of the effects for the haunted mansion.
Even thou the movie wasn't all what everyone expected , in such " scary " , i liked the movie because in my view the movie was enchanthing and and some what lovely vitorian . Aslo even thou alot of people think that eddie murrphy ruined the movie , put your self in his shoe's for once and think about how he would of reacted . other wise what your saying is a waste of time . How about keeping it to your self for once ! :D
@alvin4325: Ummm...DUH. Even the ride has him be it. He commits hanged suicide due to the death of his Bleeding Heart Bride (called Emily in the ride, but Elizabeth in the movie). Constance, however, is based on the wife of Yancey, the Hatbox Ghost, who is rumored to be George in the Hanging Portrait room. Speaking of, it is said that George is the father of our Ghost Host, making Constance Emily's mother-in-law to be, IF Connie and Emily BOTH didn't...you know...DIE.
@alvin4325 no he isn't , in the movie yes, but the ride no, you don't see him in the ride at all, all you'll see of him is a portrait that's it, the ghost host is the called the Hatchet man sometimes, don't get any ideas
I don't care what everybody else thinks- I really like this movie. Sure they took something creepy and tried to make it a comedy, but you know, I like it better that way. To be honest, I wouldn't have watched it if Eddie Murphy wasn't in it.
Besides, they didn't completely strip it of its creepiness.
That out of the way, the beginning is the best part!
I hope Guillermo keeps the man who acted for Edward Gracey in the 2003 film. I thought he suited the part and I don't think they played him up nearly enough.
@dazzledpixie The scream? Have you ever been on the Haunted Mansion ride before? In the elevator during its descent, there's a part in toward the end where you can see the guy hanging and after that it goes dark and then you hear the scream.
It was announced that they were remaking 'The Haunted Mansion' and that Guillermo Del Toro would be producing and possibly directing. They want to change it from a comedy to a possible PG-13 Horror. Yay, I'm happy :)
I love this movie no matter what anyone says, and the set is outsanding!!! The first three minutes are visually beautiful! I wish that there would have been more scenes like the intro throughout the movie and I wanted more interaction between Elizabeth and and Mr. Gracey and to have seen their love story acted out.
@73felice yeah! they almost should have made a second movie to based on how they met, their love life, complications they had and her murder obviously, that would have been SO cool
I hope the new one will be set in Victorian times like this throughout the entire movie. The opening credits here are gorgeous -- if only the whole movie was made with this setting as opposed to the modern day storyline! I don't think this movie was terrible, but the ride deserves an Oscar worthy movie, something like POTC which did get nominated. Even though the new one will be coming out I'll still have a special place for this movie, haha I practically grew up with it :)
@JudgeDomClaudeFrollo I completely agree with your comment lol. And @darthvalor07, no, I don't think you're the only one who liked the whole movie, but for some reason it just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm glad there are some that do like it. :)
I agree that the opening sequence was the best part of the movie. It had me hooked and then the movie was such a bummer. However, I can't help but nitpick with the "death" tarot card, since "Death" doesn't necessarily mean PHYSICAL death, and most often represents rebirth. *sigh* :D
Makes you wonder where the curse came from; Elizabeth's heartbroken family, the Fates deciding that too much had been left hidden to leave for resolving in either Heaven or Hell, or maybe the wealthy young man uttered the curse himself with his dying breath.
no actually i loved the movie from the begin till the end....i think the ride at the disney actually goes perfectly well w/the movie!!! i dont know y ppl r complaining soooooo much bout sucha great movie! very romantic and funny movie <3 it!
question: If the butler lured Sara to the mansion then how come he wanted her to marry mr. gracey i knw he wanted the curse to be broken but why did he want to marry the two. Cuz he hated elizabeth i think its a crazy plot
Considering that they actually *built* that high, I think we can assume that they had ladders that went that far up. Just because something is old doesn't automatically mean it is primitive.
@venecontry No its how a bride searches in vain to find her groom who vanished before their wedding and as she searches the house and the surrounding area turns in into despair and into disrepair and eventually sinks into deepest circle of hell.
they did get as close to the ride as possible but i just wish they could of added the stretching room...i mean like trap eddie murphy in the room and have the same kind of thing happen like in the ride and he has to find his way out
I personally enjoyed the movie. Except...I only wish they would have expanded more on Mr. Gracey's story. I just love the beauty and sadness of it all. :) sucker for a romance here. hahah
but yeah, I too believe that the beginning was the best part... plus all the clips of Edward. hehehe ^_^
not to make this a race thing because i am black but elizibeth is african or nubian whatever she is in real life wouldn't she be like a slave or somthing, well i guess she had a lot of power back then just an opinion.
I love the beginning and the concept of the story because it's dramatic and beautiful but the eddie murphey comedy just screwed it up and I was dissapointed.
This was a completely ridiculous and upsetting movie fail...to me. Pirates of The Caribbean was not a comedy but an action movie, and it's a Disney movie! So...what the heck happened with this???
Why couldn't this be Disney's excuse to make it's 'only' Horror movie? OMG, I cant WAIT to remake this :)
@darthvalor07 i liked it too but they could have added more to the phantom 5 ( the four busts they did not add the last one) and they could have made them sing the whole song instead of a part of the end at the beggining of the scene
When i saw this intro, i thought YES, this is gonna be a great movie!, but as soon as the bit with eddie murphy talking to the couple buying the house. I knew somthing was wrong.
I thought they showed good and evil in a way kids could understand-I did when this came out I was so young it's werid to think about-I loved they guy who did the Princess Bride in this
I do agree with ManorRecluse...the beginning is the only good part of the movie. I really want to get the rights to reuse the start because it is very well done. One thing I will change however, is the way the bride is murdered. In the ride, her heart beats red, so I believe that the butler (or someone else) stabs her in the heart (non gory) while shes in the attic trying on her wedding dress. This will explain why her heart beats red...and why shes holding a candle. To have some light...
The thing with The Haunted Mansion ride is, its not a scary attraction...but it has it's creepy feeling factor. I don't understand why Disney turned the movie into a comedy. There's nothing funny about the attraction. In my opinion, a PG-13 Horror or Mystery and Suspense would've been appropriate. Pirates got a PG-13 rating and it was a HUGE success. Guess we wont see a better version until I remake it, making it TRUE to the ride. Dark, tragic, and creepy
Actually, in a way, I'm glad this movie wasn't all that good... Otherwise they would have put movie references in the actual ride. Which would've pissed me off! Pirates of The Caribbean is almost ruined in my eyes because of the movie references. At least the Pirate selling wenches is still there (Please put the Pirates chasing the women back) but Haunted Mansion has officially become my favorite ride, simply because there aren't any movie references in it.
ok listen up . the original story of madame leota on the ride was she was inlove with gracey. she glamored his first wife lillian into the tightrope act and killed her "the stretching painting girl" and killing the other wife "attic ghost" by making her think gracey stood her up on her wedding day. gracey finds out catches her. she try's to put him in her ball but it backfired.

Tim Burton should do this one as well. I mean, Alice in Wonderland looks promising.

2:50 - 3:00 is the only good part, because it actually captures the spirit (and music) of the classic disneyland attraction.

@darthvalor07 I certanly liked the whole movie. It had a clever plot and was humorous but still had that creepy edge to it.

@darthvalor07 i liked it too but they could have added more to the phantom 5 ( the four busts they did not add the last one) and they could have made them sing the whole song instead of a part of the end at the beggining of the scene

BabyBoiSlim1990 2 years ago
I think they turned it into a comedy because they wanted to keep the disney feel. Anyway, Disney did create Snow White and Cinderella.

i remember when i was little me and my family went to disneyland and we got on the haunted mansion and though the ride i was scared and crying.
billie1564 2 years ago
Actually, in a way, I'm glad this movie wasn't all that good... Otherwise they would have put movie references in the actual ride. Which would've pissed me off! Pirates of The Caribbean is almost ruined in my eyes because of the movie references. At least the Pirate selling wenches is still there (Please put the Pirates chasing the women back) but Haunted Mansion has officially become my favorite ride, simply because there aren't any movie references in it.

ok listen up . the original story of madame leota on the ride was she was inlove with gracey. she glamored his first wife lillian into the tightrope act and killed her "the stretching painting girl" and killing the other wife "attic ghost" by making her think gracey stood her up on her wedding day. gracey finds out catches her. she try's to put him in her ball but it backfired.
spinjoh 2 years ago
Remember, that's just cast-imagined stories. Madame Leota on the ride's story was that she was a cool effect they could do in a haunted house.
