i want to start a project building a V8 from scratch, I really dont have any mechanic experience or any thing. Is it possible for the average guy to try to do this in their garage, and if so does anybody know any good guides, and where to start on a project like this for a beginner?
@DevinWhiteman Same here pal im currently trying to get a hold of a ford 460 v8 as my car needs a complete overhaul, yes I do believe even the average guy can do it...
But definitely suggest you either pick up a haynes manual or other books which focus on rebuliding v8's, you know complete tear down and reassembling the engine again, these books are available online at amzon or even on ebay.
Hard to believe that GM still makes motors with an overhead valve design. Not saying that's a bad thing, just that almost everyone else has went to overhead camshafts
@ncsufan1 Well the reason for that is nobody has figured out how to build a V8 engine that can be manufactured in 4.8L to 7.0L configurations with 300-650 hp tunes, is cheaper to build then a DOHC V6, and is reliable.
That is why the Chevy Small Block will live on till there is no gasoline left in the world.
LS7 or LS3. One bolt cam gear and rectangle intake ports are clearly NOT of an LS6. Great video though. These engines really are that simple as the video makes them look. I love all the LS engines.
@ledbetterbrothers hey do you know if all ls engines were direct injected engines? or where i can find more information about them? i wanna learn all about the LS engines because i hear lots of people debating different information about it i wanna find out for my self thanks for reading this please reply
@mrcool28x None of the LS engines are direct fuel injected, if that is what you mean by injected. If you want to get a good start on learning about LS engines I would recommend getting "How to Rebuild GM LS-Series Engines" by Chris Werner and "How to Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s" by Will Handzel. Those books cover all the basics about these engines and will get you going in the right direction. Take care.
Too Bad GM did not get it like fords 302, and finally do what the racers have been doing for thirty years. Finally just in time for the 350 to get axed by the EPA, now GM fans are stuck with V6's,that get eaten by Fords. But we all know now GM management has their heads up their asses,by telling you your not to call your Chevy a Chevy,It's Chevrolet my good man RV
Excellent bud! What software was this model drawn in? as a mechanical Engineer im interested in purchasing Autodest Inventor as at the moment I use Autocad standard both for 2D detail drawings and 3D models. P.S Sweffe 96 People do indeed draw 3d models for a living and it is there job to do so. I draw for a living. And to be fair nearly everything you own has been draughted up first on the drawing board before being manufactured.
@ProGAMER24 And just what do you think the Camaro will have in 2012? GM will toss in a slightly bigger cam and direct injection and everything will be back to normal, stomping wimpy Mustangs at the track. Mustang is traditionally a second place car.
@ProGAMER24 Fuel mileage won't win you any races at the drag strip kid. And the LS1 was doing 28mpg with 320hp over 10 years ago and kicking Mustang's ass all over hell's acre. GM makes the world's fastest V8. Too bad if you're a Ford fan.
@fordboy111591@fordboy111591 Ford's Powerstroke is a great mill, but shouldn't we be comparing apples to apples here? If you want apples to oranges why not talk about a 500 Detroit Diesel?
watching this video in no way teaches you how to build and engine. It shows you the parts of and engine and where they are located but it in no way shows and installation of freeze plugs or piston rings for example. It also shows no tourqe sequence or specs for any of the bolts. so i highly doubt you built a running motor just from watching this
You can buy a complete ready to run LS6 from GM Crate Motors for about $5500. That's pretty inexpensive. The only reason you would want to build a stock engine is if you already had some of the major parts.. i.e. block and heads, otherwise you should just build one from scratch with custom parts.
what do you mean "someone" has too much time on their hands? the GM logo in the bottom corner would lead me to believe it was produced by general motors and probably serves some purpose in the assembly or design of the engine. man, when will those engineers get a life
It is an American V8 engine! It's technical name is V8 OHV(over head valve). It has a single camshaft in the midle of the V block and 2 valves for each cylinder! the hemi has overhead cams (camshafts over the cylinders), while small block engines have a camshaft in the middle of the V, with pushrods pushing the valves up and down.
