I was talking to a Canadian friend one of these days and she told me that even if a foreigner speaks good English it's easy to identify them by the fact that they almost never use phrasal verbs and idioms while talking.
Ah I didn't know for the word pilot thanks :) , I'm really interested in learning the american accent. It's funny to see the difference between the british and the american accent.
I'm french and I learn english at university, but my british accent is horrible, I find the american accent easier to pronounce :).
Sometimes it harder to find the right stress for words from a book then when you listen to Americans say them, and without practice it's easy to return to home way of expressing a word.
Thanks Lisa ....you are amazing..I have studied that if the syllable is unstressed, the vowel suond in it becomes a schwa..but the problem is how i know the stressed and unstressed syllables in a word without a dictionary
@unique838 There are some rules about syllable stress. I talk about them in Chapter Five of my book "Mastering the American Accent." However, there are also many exceptions. So, unfortunately, you will just have to use your dictionary. Also, listen carefully to how native speakers pronounce those words. Best wishes!
This is a true story. A few months ago, my caucasian friends said my English sounded weird and they had a hard time understanding what i was saying. I can see most people squint their eyes when i talk to them.
The moments I started subscribing to your website and buying your videos, my English has improved!
Met with my caucasian friends again (few days ago) and they suddenly said my English is reeeeeally good (all of them) i think they forgot that I used to speak bad English!
I'm living in usa since 2008, did english school and in my own country learnt english during years and years, i never knew this rule. Of stress or non-stress.
I heard about the schwa, always asked me, how to know where is the schwa.
oh wow. It's gonna be difficult for me. I've been living in Singapore for like more than 10 years and the way people in Singapore speaks was atrocious.. I hate 'Singlish'
There was a lot of things I haven't really noticed in this video. Thanks a lot. It's funny how you just thought me that I say Sweden the wrong way (I'm from Sweden)
I don't know if you ever get the time to read your mails, but in case you do, I want to let you know that you are the BEST in the business. I really appreciate your effort, it's all so clear & lucid, easy to grasp and you are also a sight for sour eyes.
Don't you wish there were more of Lisa' videos on you tube? I have downloaded every one of them and want more. Since it's too much a bother to buy her books from where I am I just have to make do with her few videos.
Dear Lisa, thanks again for such a great video. I just love the way you show the beauty of the AMERICAN ENGLISH. Actually I had a question regarding vowels. You say in your book that in some parts of America they don't even make the difference between /ɑ/ and /ɔ/ so I was wondering if this is related to a certain geographical area in the states or just depends on the speaker. I learned English in Florida and personally I don't think I make this difference or maybe yes but I don't realize. Thanks
Interesting. I also noticed that some words even has "S" it has not pronounce in the word, like 'aisle', isle but not in this lesson. Some day, what about examples of that? Best regards from Brazil.
