I enjoyed this very much and in my younger times , I had this record by Decca, it's a single 45rpm, one side in English version and the other side was in Mandarin version, both sung by Tsai Chin. Can you please post the mandarin version for us, it will be grateful of you. Thanks.
Thank you for the news about Dong Pei Pei. Her music director re-edited the lyrics and added some mandarin verses. Hence, she is still not the original singer. Around that period, copyright law was not existent or non-enforceable. Many Hong Kong writers used American Hits and put in Mandarin lyrics, or even modified the bit or background music a bit. The most famous is Cheung Lu's "Give me a Kiss" from Seven Lonely Days sung by Georgie Gibbs. Kong Ling sang a lot of these re-edited US songs.
Thank you for the news about Dong Pei Pei. Her music director re-edited the lyrics and added some mandarin verses. Hence, she is still not the original singer. Dong Pei Pei sang other romantic and melodious songs, like Kong Ling., no doubt..
Tsai Chin was born in 1957. The movie "World of Suzie Wong" which has the song "The Ding Dong Song" was made in 1960. Hence, Tsai Chin definitely is not the singer of this song.
Does anybody know the singer's name for the sone 'Half A Love' which is on the HK Pop Chart around 1960? (Seems to be an Italian because there are parts of the lyric in Italian. the song begins with Half A Love is better than no love at all....
Another question: Does anyone have the song "Ten Lonely Guys" sung by pat Boone which was on the HK Pop Chart in around 1960 as well?
Excellet song! Remind me so uch of the childhood...I never thought I'd find this song anywher. Thanks for posting.
By the way I want to listen to the song Yum Yum Tree again, the one that was popular in Hong Kong in the 50's(?). Know where I can find it? Could you send it to my email? sidug@shaw.ca
I am familiar with the Hong Kong Hit Parade (20) in the English channel and the top 10 in the Chinese channel over the period of 1958 to 1963. I am aware of the song Yum Yum Cha Cha by Roberta Shaw which I got the 45 rpm record. It is also here in the UTube. But I am not aware of a song called Yum Yum Tree. Who sings it?
Hey Suzie wuz a genuine 'ho' no? What a great song - it doesn't take much to
make the leap from Ding Dong to Ka-ching! It's surely a masterpiece of sexual euphemism. I was barely a teen when the movie came out and I had a crush on Suzie W. If only I had known...maybe I did. Innocent or informed, the song works.
Thanks for this upload - totally love it. Gonna rent the dvd soon as I can find it.
Great to see the spinning record! Great idea! I always thought it is so difficult for someone to put in the such much accent. One has to be very theatrical to achieve that.
Tsai Chin's real name is Irene Chow (周采芹). Note that she is not the famous Taiwanese singer Choi Kum (蔡琴). Also, this song (Ding Dong Song) has been made into CD now under the label of Karussell, record number 551 125-2.
This song was the second time that a chinese song (Second Spring) was adopted and turned to be a English song by Western Country. The first song was 'Rose rose I love you'.
Wow, that's great to hear this song! I'm supposedly related to her. My dad said he met her at his home when he was a young boy, when she first came over to the UK and she made a big impression on him. ;) I assume my love of Chinese women is hereditary... :)
The lyrics of the Chinese version is much better and more meaningful, hearing a bell in the silent, make me think of lots of the past and think of the coming spring and so on.....talking about love without really mentioning the word 'love'.......what i hear here is just 'hug me', 'kiss me' and 'love me', just love at very superficial level.
Tsai Chin's "Ding Dong Song" was quite a hit in Singapore in the early Sixties...when movies like "The World of Susie Wong" was shown at the local cinemas...hahhahhahaha...still loving it till these days..!!! Cute song!!!
Rumrat still trying to trace Wes we did get close finding that he did reside in Blackpool but unfortunately we think he may be dead. Jock (Nutty) Barr is helping me try and trace him. who are you? get in touch I was on Lincoln as well. Ray Eaves was my oppo I heard that he got killed crossing the road a few years ago
Brings back fond memories of crazy runs ashore in Hong Kong 1961/62 whilst serving on HMS Lincoln. Thanks FIFER777 I wish Wes my oppo could could share it with us.
..also I remember the 'B' side was the same but in Chinese and a delightful girl in the Peter Bar in Sembawang used to stand up and sing it....brilliant (well anything was brilliant after 10 pints of Tiger Tops) LOL
Is this English Ding DOng Song played here sung by Tsai Chin? Did she sing the song in the UK stage play "The World of Suzie Wong"? Is it true that this was originally a Chines song called Second Spring? Who sang the original Chinese version? Tsai Chin also? Anyone knows the history of this song?
Thanks for info. I don't understand the chinese lyrics well. I was hoping for a translation. But anyway, I prefer the English version by Tsai Chin. It sounds cute and more upbeat although it appears repetitive.
For more information of this record .... the flip side of this record is "Second Spring" and still performed by Tsai Chin, and this record was pop in 1959.
Elgump , I dont know about the army but this was the navy routine in Hong Kong. China Fleet Club until about 2330, night clubs until 1200 then down to the stalls for a fight with the locals, it really was happy days lol
Brilliant, brings back happt memories of the United Bar in Wanchai when the young girl used to sing this , I thought she was just beautiful--I was 19 then---happy days
He obviously knew the girl in the United Bar because that is the years I was there--Elgump---it was great to be young then and be part of a proud nation
oooo You touch my tralala mmmmm my ding ding dong

The Chinese version is 第二春(The Second Spring) sung by 董佩佩 in 1956. It is on YouTube too.
Just copy & paste the Chinese words and search.

I hear the bell go DING DONG deep down by my heart
Each time you say "Kiss Me"
Then I know it's time for DING DONG to start
Each time you say "Hug Me"
Ding Dong Ding Dong
Each time you say "Love Me"
Ding Dong Ding Dong
I hope I don't wait too long
To hear my bell go DING DONG
