I was in Holland to buy these tulips to bring to her grave, and sadly to say, they where not to be found... Any clue as where they might grow? I am deeply sorry. The woman was a saint and deserves better than this...
A true beauty...not the tulip, but Audrey Kathleen.....How could we NOT love her so much? She will always be alike a "big sister" to me, even though I grew up a continent away...She will be with us forever...
@Geschichte2010 maybe the heck you should the heck give that answer yourself, being a self proclaimed admirer of that much loved prussian empire..thanks for all the fun you've given europe last century !
@Dirkdebruyne I've given? You mean Prussia?. I find it inaccurate- that the Prussian state is attacked and eliminated, while other states are 'tolerated' for their actions. By the way- it is the decisions of individuals (either good or bad) which has an affect on the future- but that a state is blamed for it (is just too superificial and wrong). Prussia is much more than mere militarism, aggression, and control. It is interesting to see Audrey speak Dutch (low Germanic eh?) Thanks for the post.
@Geschichte2010 Yeah this is where the Kaiser lived. According to different things Ive read, Audrey's grandparents owned this house and sold it to the Kaiser sometime around when Audrey's grandfather became Governor of Suriname. Audrey's mother grew up in this house.
Ik vind het zo leuk om filmpjes te zien waar ze nederlands spreekt! Ze is en zal altijd mijn favoriete actrice blijven. Ze was geweldig en blijft geweldig!
Thank you for sharing this video with us. For those who are wondering about Audrey's Dutch command, her entire education from kindergarden to the graduation of an equivalent to our high school was in Dutch. She even carried a Dutch passport, but I don't know when she became a U.S. citizen (Garbo did not become a U.S. citizen until around 1951). Anyway, Audrey speaks Dutch the same way Luvy Howell spoke English on "Gilligan's Island," highly affected, and very elegant and proper. Dank u Audrey!
Flemish is just the same as normal dutch, it's just the pronunciation that is different. But then you can say that the dutch they speak in the netherlands is also a dialect... and that's not true
I think you're exactly right. But it's hard to name the difference. I think the difference is mainly in pronunciation, because the rules for grammar and spelling are the same.
The way they spoke Dutch back then was way more pure than the Dutch we speak right now. Too bad...well, at least we still have the video to check how it's supposed to be spoken. :P
Is this true, Harregarre? This video couldn't be more than 20 years old. How much could the Dutch language change in that amount of time? Why, do you think?
Anyway, what could be more perfect than my favorite actress, speaking my favorite language, dedicating my favorite flower? Dank U, Nederlanden, voor Audrey Hepburn--en tulipen. Sorry if I wrote it wrong; I like the way it sounds, but I don't speak Dutch.
Well, the way she spoke Dutch was beautiful yet very affected and old fashioned (which I love!). I think it was because of her upperclass upbringing (her Dutch mom was a barones) and the fact that she learned to speak it a long time ago (in the 30's, when people, especially the upperclass had a different pronunciation). You can compare it with old fashioned British English when the uppeclass spoke with a rolling 'R' ('VeRRRy nice').
Dank U, JeanVe. I think she spoke English in a similar manner--not quite rolling the R's, still a little old-fashioned and politely correct, but not affected. I think that's why everyone loves it so much when she says, "Bastard!" at Albert Finney in Two for the Road.
It's special to hear a legend like Audrey Hepburn speaking Dutch [it's also my language]! She pronounces every word so charming; the nowadays Dutch people can learn from it.
It came from the bonus disc of "Gardens of the World," so I'm assuming the film crew from that show tagged along and filmed this for Audrey. They were in Holland at one point to talk about tulips and other bulb flowers.
No he visto un video donde Audrey esta hablando espanol (espero que hay uno! me encantaria eschuchar ella hablando mi lengua!) Pero, hay uno con ella hablando bellisima Italiano!
thanks ! I believe that there are audrey hepburn video's speaking spanish when the Unicef missions in america central ! sorry for my english I speak better spanish ! ^^ Besitos , bisous, kisses ^^
I've been speaking dutch all my life and I really can't detect the english accent..;as her parents were mixed dutch/english and aristoratic she spoke 'bekakt'...dutch people will know what that means...but an english accent is something different still
She spoke Dutch beautifully, due to her family who indeed was old money. Although there was no accent, if you listen closely you can hear her say '..die voor mij een grote voorbeeld is geweest' which is a tiny grammatical error, which gives away her mixed background.
I love Audrey Hepburn and I am proud she'd lived in Holland.
Indeed, for us dutchspeaking people it was always an almost surreal experience to herar this legendary movie star speak such beautiful dutch..she had not forgotten her roots, she spoke slightly affected but very stylish without any english accent...wonderfull!
Only the subtitles aren't completely right. In the first part, she actually says: "...who never thought of herself and has been a great example for me. If you permit me, I would like to give this tulip to my sweet, sweet aunt Jacqueline, Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau."
Wow...it is so great to hear Audrey Hepburn speak Dutch :) I knew she was from The Netherlands, but I had never heard her speak Dutch, thanks for posting this! I even feel a bit proud to be Dutch now...LOL ;)
Thanks so much for sharing this! Audrey is so graceful, and the whole thing is so sweet! And to hear her speaking Dutch like that... well, that's something! :)
Muito triste.
