It's true that many Aznavour songs lose their touch when they are sung in English, but his decision to sing in English is still of great help to many listeners who don't understand French, but want to know the depth and wisdom behind his poetry. Thanks to the Internet, I started learning French by translating my favorite Aznavour songs, and when I read French now, I can understand about 80% of the content. I'm happy he decided to sing in many languages for the rest of us to enjoy him too.

Unfortunately I don't know French to understand the lyrics in original versions of his English songs, but it's very weird for me to see people post that there's not as much artistry in his English translated songs, for me they are still supreme poetry. Then I simply envy those who know French, maybe it's also a reason to learn that language :)

I have three favorite singers in the world

Charles Aznavour, Nat King Cole and Julio Iglesias. Their melodies and their lyrics are timeless.

Having said that, I have to confess, however, I always come out unsatisifed whenever I listen to an english version of a Charles song. Despite numerous efforts on his part to bridge his francophone and anglophone audiences, the result falls short in my opinion.

Maybe he tries too much to directly translate the songs from french to english. The poetic translation into english is just not attainable for the english to fully appreciate this man's artistry, at least not in the way he has so many times attempted. The elasticity of the french language has no match in my opinion, especially when it comes to a poetic work into english.

Yeah, when I tell myslef Aznavour's lyrics are the best part of his sings, I'm reminded of his melodies, then I say it's the melodies, and I'm reminded of his beautiful voice, then when I settle for his voice, I remember how great a performer he is. That's true, but my English speaking friends deserve to understand and benefit from Aznavour's lyrics. Aznavour was in San Francisco last September. He gave one of the best concerts I had attended in Saratoga, at the Mountain Winery. He will tour South America, including Mexico sometime in early 2008. He is giving about 40 concerts in France and other European countries this Fall.

Try googling for palais des congres and Aznavour, for concerts in Paris, France and Belgium. I learned recently that he's going to sing in Egypt in January. I doubt he will sing in the U.S. again anytime soon.

When I was child, my parents brought me to a concert and I have had the pleasure to see to the Theater Metropolitan in Catania (Sicily - Italy) Charles Aznavour to sing with MIA MARTINI. Mimì there is not unfortunately more but it is always long live in my heart and in the heart of everybody.
