Have you thought of adding a layer of tissue paper glued down with white PVA glue before you paint. It may sound crazy but It'll look great. I do it with my wire trees.
I'll post a respose vid to show you how I do it :)

Wow a stunning effect! Such a great tree. Like James Cameron would approach it, based on something we can understand, but with something a little alien thrown in. All the comments here have the same sort of surprise "OMG Bill thought we'd seen it all" vibe which is fantastic! You just keep making us smile in surprise :D

Very good looking in the end, only thing I'd try to do different is get some bigger leaves for the top, as the trunk is a bit thick. Getting bigger leaves isn't a problem though, and the technique for the trunk in and of itself is really effective.
I thought that I would have gotten used to it, but man, your creativity still strikes me! to see you take something we all see just for what it is and then make something completely different and awesome with it. Man you rock!
You have a skill for putting together things and ending up with something that looks far better than expected. The tree might be a little too tall for me, might have to shave off a couple of inches, but the end result is excellent. Lovely colour blending, and I like those crazy vines you found - makes the tree look the part for an alien jungle. I bet a whole jungle collection looks very impressive.
Yet another fantastic piece my friend. So simple, but so effective.

@bensrpgpile2 Its been ages but its soled in 50 foot sections. I'd ask for twined (sp) rope:D

What scale would you use this for? It looks kinda big for Warhammer 40.000 (for example) but perfect for Star Wars (lets make a Degoba table!!).
