Yoshiki's 1992 and 1993 solos were much more powerful, without being 15 minutes. Back then, he played one brilliant phrase after another, each uniquely memorable. With that music, he actually deserved to thrash around. Now, he just dissolves into lazy arpeggios, predictable head-nodding, and occasional keyboard banging. The audience cheers out of nostalgia, not awe.
Remember that he is also much much older now, and his health is down. Before this solo you can actually see him panting hard from the excretion of playing the drums so hard. In 2008 he collapsed before he even got to this point! He's really doing his best, and even though it might not be as intense as the 1993 performance, I still think it's beautiful, and I'd rather have him play like this, than having him die on us from putting too much of himself out for the music. What about you?
@Ullragg First, a thin 41-year-old will not likely have a heart attack from piano-playing. Yoshiki just fainted from the stress of performing for the first time in many years, exertion, hunger, probably lack of sleep. No real harm was done -- he performed fantastically the next day.
Second, I'd be fine with a less dramatic performance, so long as the music was powerful. His calm Anniversary performance was brilliant. He should compose a good new piano solo and, if necessary, play it calmly
b4 any more of u out there deciede NOT to give this performance a full 5 stars..tink again...its the message thats being conveyed , and the selected few repeatative yet hunting notes that is so freaking sustainable that it can have its rightful 8 min of more in a 23 min song.
remember the lyrics to art of life as u listen to this.
